~Bucky: Haunting Voices (Part 5)~

Highly recommend re-reading the first four parts, I wrote them three years ago lmao

Bucky never wanted to leave your side, but he still had a job to do. Being a sniper within the Howling Commandos was a position he couldn't slack off in. In times of war, there aren't any days for resting.

One day, after a three day mission along the French border, he finally arrived back at their base camp, walking alongside Steve towards the base infirmary. It was a bit of a tradition, getting back from a mission and visiting you. The boys would take turns telling you every detail of what happened, knowing you would be extremely jealous of all the fun you were missing out on. They were lucky in that they had stayed at this base for the past two weeks, so there were already chairs set up by your cot, and all of your nurses knew them by name.

"You know, one day I will be sitting on a nice, soft sofa, cuddlin' up to my gorgeous wife, and you won't have me to constantly cover your back." Bucky teased, recounting the multiple times he has saved Steve with his sniper rifle.

"Well, maybe I am purposefully reckless just so you don't get too bored and do something stupid." Steve retorted while they passed through the entrance of the makeshift hospital. Bucky let out a laugh.

"Just watch, one day I won't be around to save your ass, Rogers." He laughed once more before pulling back the curtain around your cot.

His smile quickly fell when he didn't see you there. His head whipped around, and he was quick to flag down a nurse that didn't look too terribly busy.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry to bother, but (Y/N) (Y/L/N), she used to be in this spot. Was she moved? Can I know where she was moved to?" He figured it was a small miscommunication, him and Steve not being notified of your cot number changing. They were having the boys sign off on all medical paperwork, your family having granted them permission to do so. Sending a letter across the sea wasn't exactly efficient.

"Sir, I'm sorry, but I can't give out patient information." The nurse politely stated, her eyes still on the clipboard in her hand. Steve reached out and gently pushed the papers down, causing her to look up and see who he was.

"I know you're busy," he said softy, "but I just can't seem to find my friend." He had a small smile on, one that would make any girl swoon. Bucky had to keep himself from rolling his eyes.

The nurse blushed slightly when she fully realized who she was talking to. "Captain, yes- of course, yes," she cleared her throat, "what was the name again?"

"(Y/N) (Y/L/N)." Bucky said. Her eyes flashed to him for a moment, then back at Steve.

"I will go find out where she is." And with that, she rushed away, going to find the single most important person in Bucky's life.

"You know," Bucky started, his hands resting on his hips as he turned to Steve, "the fact that YOU, Steve Rogers, had to charm a girl into doing something for ME," he emphasized his words by pointing a finger at his chest, "it all seems a bit backwards." Steve laughed, his hand coming up to grab the left side of his own chest, his head tilting back.

"How does it feel to be the little guy, Buck?" He wiped a tear from his eye, truly relishing in how uncomfortable Bucky must have felt in that moment. He was about to say something more when a doctor walked up to the pair. Bucky's heart immediately dropped into his stomach.

"Sargent Barnes, Captain Rogers," he greeted with a nod of his head, "I'm Dr. Maarino, I have some updates about Ms. (Y/L/N)."

"Is she okay?" Bucky interrupted, his voice low and serious.

"Yes," the doctor stated, "she actually woke up for a few minutes." Bucky's breath stopped for a moment and his eyes slightly widened. "However, she didn't stay awake. We don't know what was pumped into her body while in captivity, but it's struggling to heal."

Bucky just stared silently, breathing becoming a little deeper. He was trying to contain his temper, because he knew that if they gave him any bad news, he wouldn't be able to stop until he found and killed every Nazi with his own hands.

"She began seizing early this morning." The doctor looked down slightly, sadness in his eyes, "We made the quick decision to transfer her inland, to a fully functioning hospital. They have the supplies to care for her far better than we ever could."

Bucky closed his eyes, fists clenched at his sides as he began counting to ten mentally. He knew he shouldn't be mad, these people had done nothing wrong, but he couldn't help but feel an immense hatred for every twisted German scientist that had laid a finger on you during captivity. He could almost feel the burning in his veins again, his mind flashing back to the cold, steel surgical table, the small prick of the IV needle entering his arm. He could remember how raw his throat would get from screaming, how dry his mouth would be from dehydration. He could remember you crying softly into his shirt when they began testing on you, too. He could remember your voice singing softly to him, how the sweet sound was the only good he could hold on to, how you were the only thing that kept him fighting.

"Where did you move her?" Steve asked flatly, placing a reassuring hand on Bucky's shoulder.

"The 9 BGH, they're currently in Leeds. They began taking evacuations earlier this week, and plan to stay in Leeds for at least two months." Dr. Maarino replied. "She's on a plane there now."

"Thank you." Steve replied, giving the doctor one final nod as he walked away. Bucky stayed silent, but now just stared at the floor, feeling empty and lost.

"I have to go." He stated quietly.

"Buck, its not that easy-"

"I have to go." His voice was hard now, and he met Steve's eyes. "If she wakes up and I'm not there, hell, if she ends up not-" he choked on his words, "if she ends up not- not being okay, and I'm not there-" he turned away and ran his hand down his face, trying to keep his tears from falling. The thought of not being by your side was killing him.

"Don't think like that, Bucky," Steve comforted, "this will all work out eventually. It always does."

Bucky took a deep breath, his eyes trained on his shoes. He gave Steve one last look, and shook his head slightly.

"I have to go. You can either fight me on it or join me."

Steve sighed, already having known that Bucky would say that.

"Lead the way, Sargent."
