"What do ya want to do today?" Bucky asked eagerly, the woman he loved strolling beside him. He used every ounce of strength in his body to keep from putting his arm around your shoulders, or taking you by the face and kissing the living daylights out of you.
"Oh! Why don't we go to that diner we always go to!" You said, that beautiful smile he loved pulling at your lips. "Oh, shoot, what's it called?" Your smile faded and you put a hand to your forehead, closing your eyes and trying to remember.
"It's Johnnys, right?" He asked, pulling your hand from your face. "The one down the road?"
Your eyes lit up again and you nodded. "That's it! Why couldn't I remember that."
"Don't beat yourself up, doll. You got a bit of work to do on that memory o' yours."
"Oh, hush." You playfully nudged him, making him chuckle. Honestly, you felt yourself falling for James Barnes already. You had only lost a year. You still remembered the memories of your friendship with him. You still remembered running around barefoot as children, you still remembered when he climbed your fire escape so the two of you could escape to a party during highschool, you still remembered the beautiful speech he said at your last birthday party. Well, the last one you remembered.
Then it gets foggy. Become a jumble of whispered words and blurry images. All you remember is falling unconcious, then waking up to find Bucky, broken by your bedside, declaring his love for you.
And hell, had you teased him. Swaying your hips slightly whenever he was near, dragging Steve wherever the two of you went, wearing the dresses that were his favorite. It was all fun and games to you, but Bucky was dying to touch you, to hold you in his arms. The effect you had on that man.
"And they have the shakes, right?" You ask. Even if you did remember, you had a hard time trusting your memory.
"Right again, darlin'. You sure you don't remember everythin' now?" Bucky joked, earning a small laugh from you. He almost swooned. Almost.
"How I wish." You said softly. He ran ahead and opened the diner door for you, motioning you in with a dramatic sweep of his arm.
"What a gentleman." You said in a fake posh accent.
"Anything for m'lady." He replied, unable to conceal his Brooklyn side. You giggled and walked in, sitting in your usual spot.
"This is the right spot? Right?" You asked. James sighed and smiled at you.
"Stop doubtin' yourself, doll. You remember this place. It's just the past year. Nothin' more." He explained, taking your hands over the table out of habit. Your gaze settled on your hands and he quickly pulled away, forgetting that you didn't love him anymore. It broke your heart to watch how his face fell when your hands disconnected, and you knew you wanted them to be back in yours.
"No, no." You said quietly, reaching over and taking his large, warm hands in yours. He looked shocked, to say the least, his hopeful eyes meeting yours.
"Did it happen yet?" He asked hesitantly. He had only asked you once before, when you were falling asleep on his shoulder at the theatre.
"Maybe." You smiled warmly. He opened his mouth to say something else, but a waitress came up and interrupted him.
"Welcome to Johnnys, I'm Mabel and I will be your server." She set paper menus on the table. "What would you like to drink?"
"Could we have shakes, please?" James asked with a smile, his thumb drawing circles in your knuckles.
"Chocolate or vanillia?" Mabel asked, keeping her gaze on Bucky.
"Doll?" Bucky turned to you.
"(Chocolate/Vanillia)." You answered. Mabel didn't reply.
"And I'll have Chocolate." James told her.
"M'kay, darlin', I'll have those come right up." She smiled at Bucky, then turned and left without even glancing at you. You rolled your eyes and huffed.
"What is it?" James asked gently.
"She's quite rude." You said just as quietly. "Makin' googly eyes at you and not once talkin' to me."
James smiled wider.
"Wipe that smile off your face, you ass." You said. Then he laughed.
"I hate you." You mumbled. He patted your hands as his laughter died down.
"You're so jealous." He said passively.
"What?!" You nearly shrieked.
"Admit it, doll, you're jealous."
"Am not!"
"Oh, come on."
"Not!"
"Don't lie to me, (Y/N)."
"Fine." You gave up, pulling your hands away and crossing your arms. "Maybe I'm a bit... jealous."
He smirked at his victory as Mabel came back.
"Here's yours, hun." She said as she gave James his, then set yours down silently. You smiled and said thank you, trying to contain the green monster inside of you. But she still did not reply.
"Jerk." You mumbled as she walked away, sipping on your shake.
"Aw, come on, (Y/N). Don't worry about her." Bucky said.
"Okay, okay." You sighed. "I won't."
He offered his hand over the table, raising his eyebrows at you. Your frown turned into a smile and you took his hand again, letting the warmth calm you.
You both drank the shakes in silence, keeping your gazes on each other. You studied his face, how his eyes were sparkling, how his smile was dazzling. You caught yourself In your thoughts and came to a realization:
You loved Bucky Barnes.
Why hadn't you seen it sooner? How long had it been? You thought back trying to remember when you first started having feelings for him. You thought back and back until you had another shocking realization. That day, the day you woke up in the hospital, you woke up with Bucky beside you. And honestly, you didn't want anybody else there. You wanted him there. Had you loved him the entire time, but was too scared to do anything? Why were you waiting?
You had no idea, but boy, were you excited to tell him when you got home.
The straw slurped as your milkshake disappeared, the sweet flavor lingering on your tounge. He finished as well, ending the drink with a satisfied sigh.
"You ready, James?" You asked, giving his hand a small squeeze.
"Yes I am. C'mon." He stood, unwinding his hand from yours.
"Let me run to the restroom real quick and I'll meet you at the door." He said, dropping money for the drinks on the table.
"Don't keep me waiting." You warned, placing your hand on his chest and giving him a soft kiss on the cheek.
He looked slightly dazed when you pulled back.
"Wouldn't dream of it." He promised, turning to the restrooms. You walked to the door, playing with the small paint chips coming off the wall as you waited.
A couple minutes passed, and you only became suspicious when you heard a high pitched giggle. You looked up and saw Bucky standing by Mabel, a fake smile plastered on his face. She reached out and ran a finger on his chest, but he just politely pushed it away. You didn't know what you were feeling, whether it be rage towards your rude waitress or sympathy for how nice James was trying to be.
You smiled and walked up to him, earning a glare from Mabel and a relived sigh from James.
"Ready?" You asked him.
"Ready. See ya later, Mabel." He said, beginning to follow you out. You saw the anger on Mabel's face, and had to control your smile.
"Have fun with that slut." She muttered, but it still reached Bucky's ears. He stopped and turned slowly towards her, clenching and unclenching his fists.
"James, don't bother." You tried to persuade him, but he still stormed up to her.
"What did you say?" He askes, his voice dangerous. You jogged up next to him to avoid a fight.
"You heard me." Mabel said, crossing your arms.
"You-"
"Bucky!" You cut him off, placing a hand on his shoulder. He turned towards you and clenched his jaw.
"You heard her!" He said defensively.
"Don't bother. She's not worth it." You soothed.
"She can't just call you a rotten name like that!"
"It's okay."
"It's not okay! How can you be okay with this?"
You sighed as he turned his entire body towards you, putting his hands on his hips.
"Do you beleive what she said was true?" You asked.
"No, no, doll. Of course not." He said quietly, his eyes softening. He reached to hold you, but dropped his hands before they reached you.
"Then it doesn't matter." You said, holding both his hands. "Besides, she's not the one that gets to do this."
"Do wha-"
He was cut off by your lips meeting his in a soft and delicate kiss, far too short for his taste. He had a look of pure shock written on his features, and you almost laughed.
"Come on, darling." You said, releasing his hands and walking out the diner. He stood in awe of what had just happened, then shook his head out of his thoughts.
"(Y-Y/N)! Wait up, doll!" He called, smiling like an idiot as he ran after you.
