"Captain Crowley, please report to the conference room. Admiral Shane needs to meet with you. Thank you."
I sat up quickly, swinging my feet off the bed, and promptly fell back on my bed. My head swam, going back and forth, making me dizzy. I remembered the seemingly endless amount of drink from the night before. I cursed the beer for leaving me like this, knowing I was the one who drank it and still blaming the beer.
I got back up and groaned, resting my head in my hands, elbows on my knees. I got off my bed and stood up. A nasty headache suddenly introduced itself into my head. "Uuugh" I moaned, leaning against the wall. I looked at my clock, reading the time. 0730 (7:30am for you non military types). Oh man that felt like 3am.
"It's too early for this" I said, complaining to myself under my breath. I started to wake up, walking through the room swaying. "I really drank too much" I told myself. I managed to walk out the door, and tripped on the door frame, slamming into the floor with a "oomf" I cursed the beer again, muffled by the floor.
I got up and walked to the conference room on the other side of the base. I walked into the conference room and saw Admiral Shane sitting with his head down, sleeping.
"Admiral" I said, trying to wake him up. "Shane." "Shaaane." "SHAAAAANE." I finally yelled, getting impatient. It scared him so much he pushed himself off the table with so much force he sat upright in his chair... and knocked the chair back, flipping him over.
He sat there with his feet in the air, now sitting horizontally. I walk around the big table, and look down at him.
"I... drank... too much" Shane said, staring at the ceiling.
"I think we all did sir" I told him. I pulled him up. "What do you need me for?" I asked him. He sat in the now upright chair and I sat across from him. He opened the folder my his hand, which I had only just noticed.
"You have been chosen for a patrol in the Western Pacific." Shane said. "
I looked at him surprised. "I thought that was dangerous territory?" I questioned.
"It is. But you have done the best in the entire submarine fleet we currently have." He said. "I'm sure you can handle it after what you did to the warship convoy."
I thought about it, thinking carefully. He was right. I was 100 percent sure I wouldn't find anything out there. There was such a vast area I knew there was no chance of finding anything. But I nodded anyway. The closer I was to the Japanese mainland the better chance of getting a kill. And besides, if I didn't the next person would. Which would've been Captain Pierce. And I couldn't let him have all the fun while I sat here.
"You will be next to another patrol area though. Captain Pierce has accepted that patrol already. I contacted him last night about it." Shane said.
Hmm, let's see, stuck here for a month cleaning the base but be away from Captain Pierce, or, go to sea and patrol even if it's next to that other thing called Captain Pierce. Well, it wasn't just me that had to sit here and do nothing. I had my crew as well. I nodded to Shane. If I knew the effect these three words would have on my future, I probably never would've said them. But I was young and eager. So I said them.
"Ill take it."
