Chapter 13 - Nostalgia
Henry and I reached the edge of Spring to see Nature, Ramone, and my sisters waiting for us.
"Henry, you've come to join us," said Nature.
Henry bowed and tried to hide a smile, "I wanted to see my family,".
"So how are we going to do this?" I asked.
"We must get to Corium first. There, we will return everyone's memories," Nature replied.
"How? I'm guessing we don't have a miracle potion or something that we could use?" I asked.
"Patience, my dear," Nature smiled gently.
Ramone produced a small vial filled with a cluster of little pink flowers to Nature.
"I brought what you asked, Nature," he said as he bowed.
"Well done, Ramone," said Nature as she took the vial.
"What's that?" I asked, gesturing towards the vial in Nature's hands.
"Flamingo Florets!" said Autumn as she clapped her hands excitedly.
"What?" I asked, confused.
"They're Flamingo Florets, inhaling its scent can help one recall their memories," said Spring.
"We will use these to return the people of Corium their memories," replied Nature.
"Hold on, there are flowers here called flamingo? Why flamingo?" I asked, amused.
Spring replied, "Just like flamingos, these flowers are originally white. They only turn pink when they bloom,".
"And guess what? Its scent is unique to everyone. It smells of the one they love most!" added Autumn.
"Now then, shall we get started?" asked Nature.
Nature looked out over the vast ocean and gracefully raised her hands. A beautiful bridge emerged out of the water. Its reflective surface sparkled under the sun, stretching out towards the horizon. Something in the middle of the bridge warped and shifted in the air like a translucent mirror.
I leaned closer to Henry and whispered, "Couldn't she have done that when we were coming? We didn't have to walk in the water and ride the Twinkling Sapphires to get here,".
"I wanted you to explore your capabilities, Summer," said Nature without turning around.
Henry gave me a sympathetic shrug and joined the rest as they crossed the bridge.
"Safe journey, Ms. Seasons," said Ramone.
I gave him a wave and followed behind the others.
The bridge felt like glass under my feet. So beautiful, yet daunting. Each step felt like I was about to fall into the boundless ocean under the bridge.
Soon, we reached the translucent air-shifting mirror on the bridge. They walked through it one after another, passing through effortlessly.
I was the last to go through the portal. I looked back at the island.
Ramone has gone back now. The island looked so small from here. Just a while ago, I arrived here with Henry, having just discovered that I could control the water. I had to leave my friends behind. I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. I wonder what they've been thinking since I left. Will they be happy to see me again?
I took a deep breath and stepped through the portal.
I set foot on the place I once called home.
It hasn't even been a day since I left this place, yet it felt like ages ago.
The sun was high up in the sky. We arrived in a quieter part of the beach. From a distance, people bustled with activity, carrying out their daily tasks, and living their normal lives.
Normal.
What is normal?
So much has happened in the last few hours, I don't think I'd find anything out of the ordinary.
These people won't be living their normal lives anymore. Soon, they'll remember.
Will they be angry at mother for what she's done?
I would be.
I can't imagine what it's like, getting my memories ripped away from me, having to realise I had a whole other life in Penumbra.
"Alright, is everyone ready?" asked Henry.
He placed his hand on my shoulder and gave me a reassuring nod.
"Don't worry, Summer. We'll fix this," said Spring.
Nature handed the vial of Flamingo Florets to Spring and said, "You know what to do, dear,".
Spring carefully took out the contents of the vial and held it out in her palm. She closed her eyes and hovered her other hand above the flowers. The blues and greens in her flower crown began to turn a deep shade of purple and back to blue. The ends of her short, pastel pink hair floated ever so slightly as if a gentle wind was blowing against her face. The flowers in her palm started to grow, delicate tendrils wrapped around her wrists and crept up her arms. White flower buds appeared, blooming into dainty shades of pink.
"Summer, will you help me mist them?" she turned to me as she opened her eyes.
The flowers on her palm have now become ten times the size it was before, showing various shades of light pink.
I looked at her nervously and she gave me an encouraging smile.
I walked over to the shore and scooped up some water in my hands. To my surprise, I scooped up a giant dewdrop. It wobbled in my hands like pudding.
I walked back to Spring and threw the dewdrop into the air. I then separated my hands above my head and watched as the dewdrop dispersed into a shower. I balled up my hands into fists as the water rained down and to my amazement, it instantly turned into mist, falling gently onto the flowers in her hands. The flowers perked up and turned a deeper shade of pink, as vibrant as a pink topaz.
"Cool," I whispered.
Henry beamed at me proudly, "Good job, kid,".
I returned his smile, feeling proud of myself.
Spring held the flowers out to Autumn, "Will you do the honors?".
"It will be my pleasure," said Autumn as she grinned mischievously.
Autumn bent down with her palm facing up in front of her mouth as if to blow a kiss and delicately blew. The flowers came apart and were gracefully carried by the wind. She maneuvered the wind skillfully with her hands, carrying the flowers around us before blowing them towards the people on the island.
I caught a familiar scent as the flowers blew past me - Ingrid and Henry. They're the ones I love most. They may not have been my real parents but they were always there for me. They raised me like their own and not once have I ever felt alone. All sorts of emotions started to well up inside me and I felt my eyes water.
As we watched the wind carry the flowers through the beach, I felt something at the back of my mind, itching to be remembered. I screwed my eyes shut and focused on it.
I'm here again.
The smell of salt in the air.
Seagulls.
What's so important about this memory?
I felt the soft sand between my toes.
I looked down at my hands. I was holding a piece of paper with something scrawled over it.
"You need to listen to me," she said.
Who?
"You're in danger."
Why don't I remember?
"He's coming for you."
What do you mean? Who's coming for me?
"I'm sorry."
She pushed me into the water. Before I could react, I dropped the piece of paper onto the sand and felt myself sinking.
Must remember.
A thought had been gnawing at me. But what?
He's coming for me.
I need to think. Think hard. Who's coming for me?
Destruction.
I wrenched my eyes open.
The sunlight blinded me and the sounds of the waves brought me back to reality.
I saw my friends walking towards me from a distance.
Destruction. He's coming for me.
