Today I finally learnt your name—
Quite by chance, I assure you,
It is not mine to say and yet
Your name is so delightful when
I speak it aloud; if only
You could hear me, my dear.
Yesterday, you learnt my name—
Again, by chance, I suppose.
Do you notice me the way
I notice you? Yesterday,
Your eyes watched me (quite intentionally);
I dared to think with some sort
Of wonder
Today I cast my eyes downwards
As you walked by; half-fearful
Of what intentional eye contact
Between us may feel like.
Tonight a war rages:
Fear of the unknown combats
The curiosity I feel towards you
For I wish to know and to understand
Everything there is to you.
Does my mind dance through your mind,
The same way yours does in mine?
Did my name provide you with anything?
Yours did; an epiphany of sorts;
I had heard your name before
While speaking casually to your father
Once, nonetheless. It's a small town
In a small world, I suppose.
Tonight, I cling to the pleasure
The knowledge of your name brings.
Perhaps I should repent and
Pray for it to last eternally.
And yet sunrise may be dampened; the dawn grey.
I have no doubt I'll see you tomorrow,
But shall things ever change?
Will I gain the courage to lock
Eyes with you and share a small smile?
Does curiosity drive you towards me,
The way it does to me for you?
Don't you too wish to share our thoughts
Of this bizarre world and laugh together
Under summer skies?
So tell me, A____ C________ (for that is your name),
Now that we know one another's names,
Would you care to dance?
