"suguru!"
the dark-haired male hesitantly spun around as he could recognize that voice anywhere.
"may I help you, kiyo?", the male sweetly asked, though the girl was not pleased in the slightest.
"why did you kill them?", she asked, her breath shaky as everything had changed after the incident.
getō was tasked by the higher ups to kill the two half-demons that were apparently causing havoc for a village.
though instead of completing the assignment, the dark-haired male had massacred the entire village and saved the two half-demons instead.
getō's fake smile dropped as he neared the girl, to which the two had stood in the middle of the crowded market — where the couple would always shop for groceries when they went over for dinner at getō's, with the male's parents.
"you know why", he answered.
"I want to hear it from you", kiyo said, her voice barely above a whisper.
getō hesitated. he couldn't bare seeing kiyo so distraught and broken. her glossy eyes and rosy pink nose; her slightly quivering lips as she tried to keep on a neutral facade.
he had to remind himself that it was for her.
"people are weak...and not all of them are worth protecting. they need to evolve and stop hiding under other people's shadows. they need to stop depending on others and blaming people like us when they die because of their own incompetence to save themselves from the demons", getō explained.
"they need to stop burdening you, my dear kiyo. you should be able to live your life as you wish. we should live free together without carrying the duty of protecting others and feeling guilt when we fail to do so", getō softly hummed, tucking a strand of hair back for kiyo as she just stood there with a tear cascading down her cheek.
"please just stay with me suguru...I don't need freedom. I'm okay as long as you're with me...", the girl whimpered out, to which a few villagers had stopped and stared, making getō pull the girl into a tight embrace.
his lips were placed on the top of the miko's head, meanwhile his hushed tone calmed the girl's shaking body.
"you might be okay with this, but I'm not. change needs to take place and I'm willing to do anything for a stronger future; for us. I promise I'll be back and when I am, we'll get married like promised".
with that, getō's arms had dropped as he swiftly turned around and left, filing into the bustling crowd as he just left kiyo standing there with her face tear-stained.
the girl covered her mouth as she looked back at satoru, who had assumed that if getō were to be comforted by kiyo, that there'd still be a chance of returning for him.
satoru leisurely walked over to his twin sister, holding her in a warm embrace as he soothingly brushed through her locks.
"he's not coming back huh?"
a sniffle was heard as tears continued streaming down the priestess's face, wetting the male's kimono.
"I'm sorry", she sobbed.
"it's not your fault", satoru comforted, escorting kiyo back to their home as getō had officially left.
that day, both gojōs lost someone important to them: a best friend and a lover.
"damn. he really did a number on this village", sukuna whistled as the houses were nothing but mere rubble now, with corpses littered here and there.
thankfully the blood had long dried, but the bodies had a huge amount of odor, which truly disgusted the priestess and demon.
"how much longer do we have to stay here? the stench is unbearable", sukuna complained, pinching his nose as he furrowed his brows.
"for someone who's killed plenty, one would assume that you'd be used to the smell already", kiyo teased, clearing her throat as she was brought out of her memories once more.
"hey! I kill and I leave. I don't just sit around and wait for all the bodies to rot", sukuna spat, his voice sounding a bit nasally.
kiyo simply hummed as she only walked deeper into the village of decomposing corpses. to be quite honest, she didn't expect any life anywhere here, but a gut feeling of hers had told her that perhaps, she might just find what she needed.
a gentle rustling was heard, to which sukuna and kiyo both snapped their heads towards the bush which didn't cover much.
kiyo's eyes slightly widened as the two small figures hurried off, to which sukuna had hastily grabbed the two kids by their tails, dangling them as they both tried to escape.
"HEY! LET US GO!!", the boy shouted.
"sukuna, put them down", kiyo said.
the two froze at the mentioning of that name. the king of demons was right before them, holding them hostage.
"huh? are you sure?", sukuna asked, to which kiyo had firmly nodded as the two half-demons were harshly dropped onto the ground.
neither of them dared to move after they had gotten on their knees and bowed, fearing that sukuna would end them there and then.
kiyo was quite amused that the two children had fluffy orangish-brownish fox tails and a set of matching, pointy ears, as the priestess had nearly forgotten that half-demons existed too.
"what are your names?", the miko softly asked, to which the boy had boldly tilted his head up a bit, scared to even look in the general direction of the demon king.
"h-hakaku", the boy stuttered, to which the girl — who was younger and smaller — felt the air squeeze out of her as her entire being started shaking like crazy.
"it's okay. we won't hurt you two", kiyo kindly smiled, to which the two half-demons were skeptical as sukuna just scoffed.
"m-my...m-my name i-is...n-nozomi", the girl squeaked out, to which kiyo had only hummed in response.
"what a pretty name! say, where are your parents? it's dangerous for kids to be out here alone", kiyo said.
"we..don't have parents", hakaku muttered, to which kiyo could relate to an extent.
"then..would you like to travel with us for the meantime? I'm sure there's a village or—"
"no! we're not going to a place that doesn't welcome us", hakaku instantly shouted, lowering his head back down as he caught sukuna's gaze.
'ah right..I suppose half-demons aren't accepted by humans or the yōkai family...quite sad honestly', kiyo thought.
"then how about living with my brother and I?", kiyo offered, not insensitive enough to let the two children just roam around the roads without any protection or food.
"how do we know that you're trustable?", the fox boy asked, as someone who traveled with sukuna didn't really seem like a good person either.
"oh trust me, she's good alright. if it weren't for her, I would've chopped you and your sister up into bits and pieces already", sukuna casually commented, to which the two children shook in fear even more, as kiyo shot sukuna a glare.
"don't listen to him. he doesn't mean it", kiyo assured, to which sukuna had only rolled his eyes as he crossed his arms.
'I definitely meant it'.
"anyways, you two look quite hungry. how about some onigiris?", kiyo offered, shuffling through her bag as she unwrapped the food items, making the younger half-demon salivate.
hakaku felt his stomach rebel at the sight of food, demanding to snatch it and eat it. however, he was still unsure of whether the priestess had good intentions or not.
sensing their reluctance, kiyo had pinched off a small portion of the onigiri and ingested it right in front of them, proving that nothing was wrong with it.
hakaku swiftly snatched the onigiri as he handed it to his younger sister first, to which kiyo had given the boy one for himself.
"so, will you two join us?", kiyo smiled, watching as the two hungrily feasted.
"mm...I guess...", hakaku grumbled as kiyo had only lightly chuckled.
"but you two walk in front first", the fox boy stated.
"huh? are commanding m—"
"will do", kiyo quickly interjected as she hastily stood up, ushering sukuna to walk forward as they finally made it through the devastating village with two half-demons trotting behind them.
kiyo just continued smiling as sukuna didn't understand why the priestess had decided to pick up two runts on the way.
"why did you—"
"shhh...watch", kiyo whispered, tugging on sukuna's kimono as their heads had slightly turned, to which the two children had fallen asleep midway on the road from their food coma.
"did you actually drug the—"
"no I didn't", kiyo scolded, carefully picking up the girl as she glanced at sukuna, urging him to do the same with the boy.
"no way".
"sukuna, come on", kiyo egged on.
the demon king's brows furrowed as he pinched the hood of the fox boy's ragged clothing, to which kiyo had sighed as she used her other arm to help adjust sukuna's arms, so that he was holding him properly.
"there, now let's go", the miko hummed.
sukuna clicked his tongue in disdain.
"I hate you for this".
