TWENTY; GRINDELWALD'S FIRE

THESEUS DID NOT WANT TYNE TO JOIN HIM, he didn't even want Garrick to be there. Any confrontation with Grindelwald was one that was not going to end well. He appreciated her offer to stand by his side and help him, but he thought it was going to be too dangerous. During her time as a captive, Tyne wasn't using magic on a regular basis. She was out of practice and she couldn't even apparate if things went horribly wrong. But she insisted on going, she wanted to talk to Credence. Feeling as though he had no choice anymore, Theseus obliged, but he asked Garrick to get Tyne to safety if it all went to hell.

They were finally given a tip of where the location was as they travelled through the Père Lachaise Cemetery. Their faint shadows silhouetted among the mausoleums as Theseus led the way, keeping Tyne close to him.

"It isn't illegal to listen to him," Theseus reminded his fellow Aurors, " use minimum of force on the crowd. We mustn't be what he says we are."

As he faced his group to make sure that everyone understood, Theseus could read the fear clearly planted on the faces of several of them. Some looked ready and willing to fight, but others feared what awaited them as soon as they entered the underground amphitheatre.

Upon entering, Tyne was already moving to go and search for Credence, but Theseus grabbed her hand, bringing her back to him. There were so many things that he wanted to say to her, but now that he had a limited opportunity, he couldn't think of anything to say. The potential of something going wrong was at an all-time high and there was a possibility that once they parted ways, they wouldn't be reunited. He didn't want to think of such scenarios, cursing his realistic mind.

"Theseus-"

"I love you, Tyne," he blurted out, " I always have and I always will."

He wanted to kiss her, he wanted to kiss her like he was going off to war and never coming home. But as he realised what he blurted out so freely into the open, he released her hand walked in the opposite direction not giving her the chance to respond. Nothing had changed from the time they were children, Tyne was still able to render Theseus' communication skills as completely useless and he didn't know how to handle his emotions, let alone show them properly.

As he walked away, he found himself turning around, ready to run back to her and actually kiss her, but she was already gone.

Tyne wanted nothing more to tell Theseus that she loved him too with all of her being. But she didn't get a chance to as he immediately walked away afterwards. She wanted to run after him, maybe even be so bold to grab him by the front of his shirt and kiss him, but she knew it wasn't the time. They weren't there for love confessions, but instead, they had a job to do. She had managed to convince Theseus to allow her to tag along with the purpose of finding Credence and speaking with him. Tyne needed to do that as soon as possible.

"Well, that's one way of telling someone you love them," Garrick said from behind her as they slowly made their way into the crowd of witches and wizards. "I wasn't expecting that!"

Tyne didn't have much to say to him at the time, only motioning for him to follow her as they listening to Grindelwald's speech.

"Do nothing when I speak of this. You must remain calm and contain your emotions," Grindelwald's voice shifted. "There are Aurors here among us."

Immediately, Tyne and Garrick froze in place, even if they weren't Aurors, the plan had been discovered too quickly for their liking. Heads turned, followed by the sounds of gasps, hissing, and angry shouts. Sinking into the nearest seats, Tyne and Garrick attempted to blend in so they didn't bring attention to themselves.

"Come closer, brother wizards! Join us," Grindelwald called to them. Tyne turned her head and spotted Theseus, standing there looking all too disappointed that it had turned on them so fast.

"They have killed many of my followers, " Grindelwald continued, " it is true. They caught and tortured me in New York. They had struck down their fellow witches and wizards for the simple crime of seeking truth, for wanting freedom..."

"Oh no," Tyne whispered, " this isn't good. This isn't going to end well.."

"Your anger...your desire for revenge...is natural."

Just as she went to grab Garrick's arm and lead him through the crowd once more, an Auror opened fire on a witch in the audience, killing her instantly. Screams filled the theatre, the majority of them calling for the heads of the Auror. Tyne watched as Grindelwald entered the crowd and approached the dead witch's body.

She continued to scan the area until she spotted Credence, sitting with Nagini. "There they are, let's go!"

Climbing down the seats, using the chaos as a disguise to their movements, Tyne managed to make her way to where Credence and Nagini were. She reached out a hand and grabbed for the back of his shirt.

"Credence?"

Immediately, the two turned around spotting Tyne and the stranger at her side. Credence's alarmed expression softened and Nagini looked relieved to see that it was Tyne of all people.

"Tyne," the young man said with a faint smile, " you're here! You made it here too. How did manage to escape? You know what, it doesn't matter, you're here!"

"Yes, I came to talk to you, Credence," Tyne told him, " listen to me, we need to get out of here. It's not safe."

Clearly, it wasn't safe with Aurors and Grindelwald's followers becoming more than hostile with each other. However, Credence didn't appear to sense the danger or if he did, he wasn't as against as Tyne would have hoped.

"No, Tyne, don't you understand, we all made it here for a reason," Credence told her, " you managed to escape, so did Nagini, and you're both here with me. It's meant to be. We've all lost something, I think...I think he can give it back to us."

Garrick didn't understand Credence's logic as he continued to glance around nervously, knowing they were running out of time.

"Aurors, join me in this circle!" Grindelwald's voice bellowed out. "Pledge to me your eternal allegiance, or die. Only here shall you know freedom, only here shall you know yourself."

Blue flames erupted as a wall surrounded Grindelwald within seconds.

"Credence, listen to yourself," Tyne said urgently as she tore her gaze away from the flames, " Grindelwald cannot bring back what was taken from us. I've lost my mother and so much, he can't give that back to us. He can't give back those years to Nagini. What is he going to give you? He's no different than Circus Arcanus. Either you follow what he says or you die!"

"Tyne is right, Credence," Nagini agreed in a soft voice, " he's only saying what others want to hear right now. He's playing on people's hardships!"

"He knows who I am."

Nagini shook her head. "He knows what you were born, not who you are..."

"If Grindelwald figured it out, we can too," Tyne told him. "He had to get the information from somewhere, we can do that as well. Let's just get out of here, we'll go somewhere safe! Please, Credence-"

"Did you find your way back to him?" Credence suddenly asked her, leaving Tyne to fall silent. "That man you always spoke so highly of. Remember? That night we talked about the things we wanted the most. You said you wanted to make your way back to him. Did you find him?"

"Yes."

"So you got what you wanted the most. Now I have to do the same."

Nagini attempted to hold onto Credence as the fire around Grindelwald continued to lash out, but Credence pulled away and began walking towards the flame. She and Tyne called out to him to come back but Garrick grabbed both women and pulled them to safety before they were burned.

Garrick, Tyne, and Nagini scrambled up the steps to avoid the fire and as Tyne looked back, she saw Queenie and Jacob. Queenie was asking Jacob to follow her, while Jacob was begging her to come to her senses. When she came to her decision, she stepped through the flames, joining Grindelwald and the others. Among them, Credence approached Grindelwald, who embraced him like a son.

"We need to get out of here!" Garrick called to them. A curse was thrown at Grindelwald, only to dissolve in the flames as they grew angrier and lashed out even more.

As if he were conducting an orchestra, Grindelwald waved his wand around, controlling the flames. In the distance, Newt and Theseus stood together on the steps, watching as several Aurors attempted to run at the flames and failed.

"Mr Scamander," Grindelwald yelled out, " do you think Dumbledore will mourn for you?"

A burst of black flames was directed towards the brothers, leaving Tyne's heart to jump into her throat. Thankfully, they had managed to dodge and before she was up on her feet, someone called for Grindelwald.

"Grindelwald! Stop!"

Leta.

"Leta Lestrange," Grindelwald's attention fell on her, " despised entirely amongst wizards. Unloved, mistreated, yet brave. So very brave. Time to come home. "

He stretched his hand out and it looked as though Leta was contemplating it.

"Leta, wait!" Tyne cried out. "Don't do it! Please!"

Finding Tyne among the chaos, Leta offered a small smile in her direction. "It's going to be alright, Tyne. I always pictured something like this for me," she said before pointing her wand at the skull resting a witch's hand that caused it to explode.

"This is my happy ending."

As the other witch was launched back, Grindelwald attacked and the fire engulfed Leta within seconds.

"No!"

Garrick grabbed onto Tyne once more and Nagini, apparating outside as Newt grabbed onto Theseus. In the cemetery, the fire had been unleashed destroying a great majority of it within seconds. Others arrived in the clearing as well, including Jacob, Tina Goldstein, and two other men that Tyne did not recognise.

"Mother of Merlin," he gasped as the flames took on the form of a dragon, " be with us."

Suddenly, as everyone seemed to be stuck in a daze, a man that appeared almost ghost-like approached them.

"TOGETHER!" he yelled. "In a circle, your wand into the earth, or all of Paris will be lost!"

Everyone that held a wand in their possession rose to their feet and fell into a circle as ordered. Tyne looked down at her new wand that hadn't been put to much use before looking over at Theseus across the way.

Seconds later her wand was plunged into the ground along with the others.

"Finite!"

The force of the flames brought forth by the group was meant to combat Grindelwald's flaming creatures. Tyne could feel the skin on her hands burning but she continued to hold steady. Everyone had to put in as much effort as possible or they would be easily overpowered. They continued to hold strong, watching as the purifying fire drove Grindelwald's flames in retreating.

Once the flames had been cleared to the entrance of the underground lair, they were sealed off, containing the rest.

They had actually done it.

Tyne collapsed. The toll of her near-death experience from earlier had left her tired but the rest of her efforts had pushed her body beyond its limits. She managed to catch herself, her hands sinking into the soil below her as she stayed propped up. The tops of her hands were red from the burns, her face stained from the smoke and from her own tears that continued to fall.  Too much had happened in such a short period of time that it was difficult to process all of it at once.

Credence had joined Grindelwald, and so did Queenie. And Leta had been lost to the flames, claiming that was her happy ending.

With her arms shaking under her weight, Tyne gave in and was about to allow her body to fall, only to be caught at the last second. She expected it to be Garrick that caught her as he had been closest to her at the time, but as she managed to lift her head, she met Theseus' concerned gaze.

Seeing that he was alright, she let out a happy cry before wrapping her arms around him tightly and holding onto him for dear life.

He held onto her, equally as tight until the two of them heard someone approaching them. Looking up the two witnessed Newt shuffle awkwardly towards them. He seemed to struggle to find the appropriate words but Tyne moved away from Theseus and pushed him to stand up. They stood before each other for just a split second before they embraced one another. Newt's chin came to rest on his brother's shoulder, he looked over in Tyne's direction briefly.

"I've chosen my side."
