ELEVEN; THE KNIGHT BUS
─── RUNNING OUT INTO THE NIGHT was not one of Tyne's brightest moments as she would come to admit later on. With no sense of direction in an unfamiliar territory, she had no clue which way to go. Her eyes scanned the empty streets that were dark and wet from the latest storm that had passed through. However, glancing up, the dark clouds covered up the night sky, so not even the moon was present or the stars. She peered over her shoulder, wondering just how far she would get before Basil woke up and discovered she was gone.
A large part of her wanted to go to Theseus and tell him what she knew of Newt's plan, in hopes that they both could help the youngest Scamander and in turn, help Credence as well. But Tyne paused in her step because nothing had changed from the prior moments. She still couldn't speak of what she fully knew without putting her own life at risk. If she said too much, she would be dead.
The fingers of her right hand subconsciously ran over her left ring finger that was bare of any jewelry, reminding her that she no longer wore the ring. But the problem remained that Tyne could still feel it. She could feel the coolness of the metal that had tied her forcefully into a loveless marriage. And to further remind her of the pain she had experienced, she knew her marriage hadn't even been the worst part of what she had gone through while being away from home.
There had been people that had been lost to her, some for forever, that raked at her heartstrings with every intention of breaking them. She had lost time with Theseus, she had lost her mother, and she had lost him.
Stepping off the curb, Tyne nearly fell and before she actually ended up hurting herself physically, she decided to sit down. It probably wouldn't be long until Basil came up to coax her back inside, but until then, she sat on the curb of the road. Her face fell into her hands, desperately trying to block out the voices that she heard in her head. Her mother's final words to her and the sound of a first breath that turned out to be the very last.
She could remember the long journey that it took to get home and she remembered how good it felt that Theseus had been able to recognise her after she had been gone for so many years. That's where she wanted to be while she healed, she wanted to be in his company, and for some foolish reason during her escape, she thought it was all going to pan out that way. But Tyne didn't take into consideration with how long had passed and how Theseus would move on with his life.
They weren't school children anymore, she had to keep reminding herself of that. They had both grown up and while she lived a life against her will, Theseus had gone on to do all the wonderful things that she wanted him to do when they were younger. He didn't let anything stop him and for that, she was proud of him. He had moved on with his life, became successful and now he was going to be marrying a beautiful woman, and they were going to have their happily ever after even during dark times.
Tyne wasn't sure where she was going to end up, but she knew that she wasn't meant to be part of Theseus' story anymore.
He had been so kind to her to help her and give her opportunities, she couldn't be angry with him that he couldn't have her in his life like before. It was a sign that she really needed to be out on her own and discovery what she was going to do with the rest of her life. But in order to do anything, she needed her freedom back. She was able to walk around at her own leisure, but being unable to talk about what happened.
She wanted to tell people, she wanted to talk about her experiences, just so they weren't trapped in her mind all the time. In order to do it, she was going to have to confront her past again and hope that she would make it out alive a second time.
As Tyne continued to sit on the curb, it started to rain again, leaving her to reach for her wand and as she pulled it out in front of her, she was suddenly blinded by two bright lights. Shielding her eyes with her other hand, Tyne squinted in hopes of catching a glimpse of what was coming towards her, but the light quickly faded as it went passed her. Shortly after, Tyne was presented with a large, purple triple-decked bus that had parked in front of her. Her lips parted in surprise as she gawked up, reading the label "The Knight Bus" off to the side.
Suddenly, the door opened and a woman stood on the stairs peering down at Tyne with an expectant look. However, Tyne remained in awe of the bus, remaining on the curb which left the older witch to become impatient as her hands placed themselves on her hips.
"Well, are you comin' or not?"
Tyne swallowed before pushing herself up to her feet and placing her wand into her sleeve. "I'm afraid I don't understand. I was just sitting here-"
"You summoned up, sweetheart," the woman said, brushing the white strands that mixed with her dark hair, " you put your wand out and here we are."
Tyne briefly remembered a discussion that some of the students had when she was younger pertaining to the Knight Bus. But she had long forgotten most of the details that surrounded the form of transportation. Apparently, she had been the one to call the bus to her without realising it, however, it couldn't have come at a better time. She took a step towards the stairs to climb on, but before she could, the woman extended her hand out.
Foolishly, Tyne thought she was offering her hand to assist her on, so she politely grabbed it, only to hear the woman laugh.
"I'm not trying to hold your hand," she told Tyne, " it cost money to ride. The rates depend on where you're going."
Quickly, Tyne turned bright red in the face and pulled her hand back. She took a step back from the back and shook her head. "I'm sorry," she began, " but I don't have any money on me. I don't have anything but my wand, my coat, and the clothes on my back right now."
She couldn't stand how pathetic that sounded and to say it to a complete stranger felt even more humiliating. Everything seemed to be a reminder that Tyne was really limited to what she could do, when really all she wanted to do was help. Muttering another apology for wasting the staff's time of the Knight Bus, Tyne turned to start walking away. She would have to come up with another plan entirely.
As she started down the pavement, Tyne came to a halt moments later, when the bus pulled up to her side once more. The witch stood between the open doors as the driver continued to face forward.
"Are you in some kind of trouble, sweetheart?" she asked Tyne. "Wandering around outside at this time at not with nothing to your name. You don't look like other wanderers I've seen out here, you're too clean. What's your deal?"
Tyne didn't need to say anything as she had been rubbing her left ring finger during the entire time that the witch had been questioning her. The witch's eyes trickled down to the other woman's hands before glancing up once more.
"Are you runnin' from something? Ex-husband perhaps?"
Well, it wasn't a complete lie in some respects, Tyne thought to herself as she found herself nodding to the question. That seemed to own her some sympathy points with the conductor, who was suddenly frowning. She opened her mouth to speak once more, but they were interrupted by a voice shouting down the way. Tyne jerked her head to the side, only to see Basil further down the pavement running towards them.
"Tyne, what are you doing?!" he called out to her. He looked entirely frustrated and she honestly couldn't blame him, considering that she had ran away when she was supposed to be in his care. "Come on, we're going to go back to the-"
Tyne didn't want to go back to Newt's home as lovely as it was. She would feel terrible if she didn't do anything to help considering how much she knew. Even if she was unable to say anything, she had to do something.
"Is that him?" The Knight Bus witch asked. "Is that your ex-husband?"
In a moment of desperation, Tyne called out "yes" to the woman's question and before she could even react, the witch grabbed her by the front of her jumper and pulled her on board.
"Step on it, Ernie!"
The Knight Bus pulled away from the curb rapidly, enough that it launched Tyne into the witch before she was steadied on her feet again. Basil was left standing in awe as the Knight Bus disappeared before his very eyes.
Tyne was moved to sit down as the woman settled across from her during the bumpy ride. The conductor introduced herself as Bonnie Ernwright and brought Tyne over a cup of hot chocolate to warm her up. While Tyne held the large mug in her hands, she held it away from her face as the hot liquids threatened to spill over the sides. She stared down at the milky chocolate drink that she couldn't bring herself to drink out of guilt.
Of course, Basil wasn't her ex-husband that she was running away from, and he was only trying to do as he had been instructed by looking after her. She had lied to Bonnie and left Basil in a compromising situation all in one move. Peering up, she saw that Bonnie was watching her, her green eyes full of sympathy along with the soft smile on her face.
"I appreciate you helping me back there," Tyne said quietly, " but I still don't have any money to pay you. You can let me off-"
"Nonsense," Bonnie said, dismissing Tyne's words with a wave of her hands, " this trip is on me. I know all about running away from ex-husbands. They just can't take no for an answer, can they? Think they control you, like you're property or somethin'."
Bonnie's words were hitting too close to home for Tyne and to keep herself from crying, Tyne continued to bite down on the inside of her cheek while trying to swallow the lump that developed in her throat.
"Do you know where you would like to go?" Bonnie asked her. "Do you have somewhere safe? Family? Friends?"
Tyne remained silent for a few moments, before shaking her head. Her family was dead and she didn't want to bother Theseus anymore.
Bonnie frowned but reached out to place her hand on Tyne's knee gently. "Well, you just think about where you want to go. You have time, Ernie and I have to pick up a few others, so just sit back and relax. You can take the bed back there and pull the curtain over for some privacy. I'll check in on you in a bit."
Left with her hot chocolate, Tyne stood up and made her way to the back of the bus to the promised bed. She sat down and pulled over the curtain, leaving her in the darkness of the shadow cast by the material. She placed her hot chocolate to the side in a small cup holder before resting back and closing her eyes.
The small plan she had developed was going to Paris where Newt and Jacob claimed they would be going but she had no way of getting there. She had never learned how to apparate, she didn't know where designated portkeys were for international travel, and if she tried swimming across again, she was sure she wasn't going to make it.
Pulling her legs up to her chest, Tyne suddenly felt more than exhausted, running on little sleep and even though she was supposed to be thinking about where she was going, all she could bring herself to do was fall asleep.

"She got on the Knight Bus."
Basil stood before Theseus as he returned without Tyne and unsure of where she had actually gone. Theseus ran his hand through his hair with a bewildered look, wondering where Tyne had gotten money to board, but more importantly, where was she going?
"Did she say anything?" Theseus asked. "Did she say anything to you about where she was going? What is this business that she needs to take care of?"
All questions that Basil really didn't have an answer for. He could only shake his head as Tyne didn't say anything to him before climbing aboard and her message that she had left behind had been extremely vague.
"I don't know," Basil said, " however, I think there was a lot going on with Tyne that even you weren't aware of. When Queenie was here, she was able to see into Tyne's mind and whatever she was able to see wasn't pretty by any means. Do you know anything of her past before she was found?"
Theseus shook his head with a heavy sigh. "No, she didn't want to talk about it-"
"She couldn't talk about it, Theseus," Basil interjected, bringing the man to peer up at him. "She tried to say something earlier to Newt and Jacob, and she was nearly choked out before she could. She's been placed under something considerably close to the Unbreakable Vow. Someone doesn't want Tyne talking and I have a feeling it has to do with her previous marriage-"
Suddenly, Theseus choked on the breath he had been inhaling at the time. His eyes became wide and his face washed over in horror. He nearly staggered back a step leaving Basil to believe that the man before him was about to faint.
"Previous marriage?!"

Tyne was unsure of how long she had been asleep when Bonnie started to gently nudge her to wake up. She woke with a start, not remembering where she was for a few seconds until she spotted the familiar face. She sat up, rubbing her eyes and apologising for dozing off.
"Don't apologise," Bonnie told her, " you have nothing to be sorry about. I was just coming in to check on you. Did you come up with a place or where you want to go? We can bring you there now if you'd like? The sun will be coming up in just a few hours if you want to wait until then-"
"Uh no," Tyne replied, " that's alright. I think I know where I want to go. Can you bring me to Diagon Alley, please?"
Bonnie nodded her head before calling over her shoulder to Ernie about their next stop. The Knight Bus suddenly changed direction and Tyne looked out the window, hoping that she was making the right decision.
"I promise," Tyne said to Bonnie, grabbing the woman's attention once more, " that once I come into money, I will pay you back for this trip. Thank you for all of your help, I really appreciate it."
"We were glad to help, you don't have to-"
"I know, but I want to."
It didn't take long for the driver, Ernie, to make his way to Diagon Alley and upon her arrival, Tyne stood in the doorway of the Knight Bus and peered out at all of the shops. She closed her eyes for a moment as they were still moving, trying to remember the layout of Diagon Alley from all the trips she had taken there as a child and her most recent trip there with Theseus. She was going to tell Bonnie where to take her specifically, but at the same time, she didn't want it to be traced back to her completely.
Diagon Alley was big enough that some searching would have to be done to find some answers and hopefully, by that time, she would be long gone from the area.
The Knight Bus came to a halt and it was time for her to disembark. With one last "thank you" and farewell wave, Tyne stepped off the bus and within seconds, it was gone, leaving her to enter Diagon Alley on her own. The roads and pavement were silent as there didn't seem to be anyone up at the ungodly hour before dawn. However, Tyne continued to look over her shoulder every so often just to be safe.
She walked along, passing multiple shops that were dark and their curtains pulled over with their large "CLOSED" signs displayed in the windows. Yet, in the distance, she saw a flickering light in one shop, and like a moth to a flame, she continued in that direction. It didn't take her long to reach the door but as she stood in front of it, she hesitated to knock.
It was incredibly late or early depending on how one wanted to look at it and Tyne definitely felt like she was intruding. But with nowhere else to turn but to head back to Basil, she decided to just go through with it and see what happened. Knocking against the door, she realised that it was possible that no one would answer, but she was quickly proven wrong as the door swung open.
Garrick Ollivander didn't look like he had been woken up from his slumber, in fact, he looked wide awake; but he did look incredibly confused as to why Tyne was there.
