III - PROFESSIONALISM

Yooo I'm back with another rant ish thing.

I put this as a rant because it's not a hard and fast rule–just opinions and advice.

: :

Ok, there's a difference between a professional book cover and a not professional book cover.

And it's all in the details.

This rant is not just for graphic designers but for anyone who wants to make a professional looking book.

: :

1. CELEBRITY FACE CLAIMS

if you really want your book to look like it belongs on the shelf of a library as a hardcover, then you need to stop using celebrity face claims.

Actually it's best to not use face claims AT ALL . Like, I'm not saying you can't use a person, but don't show their full face. Part of their eyes, maybe. Their lips–sure. Their back–totally.

Their face? No.

Either that, or use a faceclaim that is MEANT for editing, like faestock on deviantart (though faestock won't really set your book apart from others since a lot of graphic designers use faestock bc she's awesome)

Anyways, all I'm saying is don't use a celebrity.

2. DON'T USE YOUR WATTPAD USERNAME

Yeah, Ilovebts1827271_fresh is not a good author's name.

A lot of wattpad authors adopt something called a penname.

Your penname doesn't even have to be your real name! It can just be a name that sounds cool, like Kierra Lee or whatever.

3. Stop with the overediting

Want to add random pngs for your graphic book? Sure. Want to highlight the fuck out of your icon? Go ahead I don't care.

But we draw the line on professionalism when you start over - highlighting or over editing an actual STORY.

If you think it looks cute (why) then fine, do it on your random books or graphic portfolio or instagram edits. Please do not overedit on an actual book.

Remember it has to look REAL.

4. Add a bunch of subtitles.

Be like "from the author of...". "a thrilling novel on..". "quote from book". Subtitle the fuck out of your book.

But please make the subtitles look neat.

5. Do a typography cover

Typography covers are the gods of professionalism and no one can tell me otherwise.

6. Be CREAAATIVE

Covers look more professional when you're putting your imagination into it–in the right way.

7.  Do vector covers.

Vector covers are the daddies of professionalism.

8. If you are doing romance, do NOT go overboard.

Chill out. Keep it sultry, cute, warm–or whatever the mood is.

9. If it's erotica, then the picture does it all for you.

No one cares about your editing skills. People just want to know how sexy the book is. Get sexy pics.

10. Make sure your title is the main attraction

Of course everyone cares about the editing or whatever but keep in mind that we need to be able to SEE your title. If we can't see it then there's no use for it take it away.
