Starlight

This oneshot occurs during the episode "One Breath" in Season Two. Enjoy!! The Song is Starlight By Muse.

Far away

The ship is taking me far away

Far away from the memories

Of the people who care if I live or die

Scully sat comfortably in a small boat, anchored to a dock. Fog surrounded her, dulling her senses, clouding her eyes. In front of her, Mulder and her sister stood, watching. She searched Mulder's hazel eyes, finding only concern, anger, and fear in its depths.

The starlight

I will be chasing a starlight

Until the end of my life

I don't know if it's worth it anymore

Hold you in my arms

I just wanted to hold

You in my arms

Mulder stared at the peaceful but blank face of his partner, Dana Scully. She had been gone for weeks, all because of Duane Barry. His anger, suppressed for so long, threatened to burst out and take it out on the nearest person, Melissa. But no, she was grieving too. Scully might die, and he may never again see those beautifully clear eyes of Scully's again. Never see her red lips curl into a smile at the awful joke he had just told. Honestly, Mulder just wanted to crawl into the bed next to Scully and hold her tightly. Instead, he glared at the people managing the hospital. He started to yell and scream at them, demanding to see who had found her. After hearing what she had written in her will, Mulder felt weak kneed. For the first time, he cursed her medical knowledge. If even there was a small chance that she would survive this coma, then she should stay on life support. Even if it was months, years even before she woke up again, he would wait. He'd wait forever for her if he had too. Dana Scully couldn't just die. She couldn't just leave him forever. He needed her. Mulder wanted justice, justice for Scully, justice for his sister, and the truth. Especially the truth.

My life

You electrify my life

Let's conspire to ignite

All the souls that would die just to feel alive

Now I'll never let you go

If you promised not to fade away

Never fade away

Not having much else to do, Scully began to explore her memories. The previous cases with Mulder, her family, her father. Then her thoughts once again drifted to her partner, who was so devoted to his work, he wouldn't even take a vacation. She remembered the time Mulder had caught her about to do the Wild Thing with a complete stranger, one of the freaks in that cult. *Gender Bender* She had felt so embarrassed, the blood in her veins had turned hot. He hadn't admonished her though, in fact, he had calmed her and made her feel better. Then one of their first cases, this time in Alaska. They had found an ancient organism, a worm. When it entered a body, it made them murderous, aggressive, and quick to anger. When all the signs of being infected pointed to Mulder, she had locked him up, not listening to his pleas of her to trust him. However, Mulder had forgiven her for that too, even after she had pulled a gun on him. *Ice* Mulder. Sweet, loyal, determined, and forgiving Mulder.

Mulder thought of working with her in the X Files, how even though she hadn't believed in a single word he was saying, she had trusted him. Scully put herself and her career on the line for Mulder. He remembered what she had said, that night in the car while staking out Toom's house. "I wouldn't put myself on the line for anybody but you." Together, they had started to unravel the secrets kept hidden by their own government. And now...

Hold you in my arms

I just wanted to hold

You in my arms

Scully dreamt of Mulder's gentle touch, kind smiles, and bright eyes. The defensive, tender, protectiveness he had over her, seeking only to keep her safe. Tears prickled at the corner of her eyes. She to find a way back to him! Scully stared into the gray fog, unrelenting as always. Only the Kind Nurse and her father kept her hanging onto life, and now, she remembered Mulder.

Far away

The ship is taking me far away

Far away from the memories

Of the people who care if I live or die

Mulder ran through the hospital, having just decided not to stay to confront the people his new Deep Throat contact had said would be there at exactly eight seventeen. He chose to go to Scully, knowing that this may be one of the last times he would ever see her. And an asleep Scully was better than a dead one anyday. He walked slowly to her room in the hospital, which wasn't very private at all. He sat on the chair next to her, reaching for her frail hand. Mulder grasped it tightly, searching for a hint of warmth in her clammy fingers. He looked into her face, pale white with a few scratches here and there. Leaning over, he brushed a few strands of errant hair from her face, knowing how much it annoyed her when it got in her eyes. "I feel, Scully, that... you believe... you're not ready to go. And you've always had the strength of your beliefs. I don't know if my being here... will help bring you back. But I'm here." He stood, squeezed her hand gently for maybe the last time. He bent over her face, studying her sharply defined nose, sharp, pointed brows, and upturned lips. Gently, Mulder placed his lips on her forehead, stroking her hair. Then he left.

And I'll never let you go

If you promise not to fade away

Never fade away

In the gloom of the foggy lake, the peacefulness of the calm waters, Scully felt something, heard something. Mulder's voice whispered from all around her, thick with emotion. "I feel, Scully, that... you believe... you're not ready to go. And you've always had the strength of your beliefs. I don't know if my being here... will help bring you back. But I'm here." Scully, for the second time was reduced to tears. He was here, with her. Or there- with her body. Either way, he had come to see her. She felt his gentle fingers, brushing the hair from her face. She smiled as the soft sensation of his lips on her forehead soothed her. Mulder, I'm coming.

Mulder ran again, this time running toward a room, a room where Scully lay. He skidded to a stop outside the door, trying to even out his breathing. She was awake! He opened the door quietly, in case she was resting. Melissa and her mother, Mrs. Scully, were in the room too. They were watching Scully as she lay peacefully on the bed, chest rising and falling normally. The door closed with a snap behind him, and Mrs. Scully rose. "Dana, Fox is here." Scully moved her head to face him, saying before she had even opened her eyes,

"Mulder, not Fox." She smiled gently at him, blue eyes open and clear again. How Mulder loved her eyes, so beautiful and blue in intensity. Melissa and Mrs. Scully walked out to give them some privacy. "I-I don't remember anything."

"Doesn't matter," He told her sternly. "How you feeling?"

"Fine." Mulder reached her bedside, unsure whether to hold her hand or not. She made the decision for him and reached for his fingers. He grasped her hand tightly, feeling her squeeze back. Remembering her cross necklace, Mulder reached into his pocket and drew it out. "I was holding this for you." Scully's smile brightened considerably at the sight of her necklace. She leaned forward as Mulder placed the cross gently back where it belonged, around her neck.

Hold you in my arms

I just wanted to hold

You in my arms

I just wanted to hold

Scully smiled up at her partner. She had missed him. She fingered the golden cross on the chain. Deciding to break the slightly awkward silence between them, Scully pulled Mulder into a hug. His head nestled into her hair and he breathed deeply. Scully ran her fingers through his unruly brown hair. "I missed you."

"Me too." After Mulder pulled away, he flashed her a grin. "I got something for you." He reached into his coat pocket and drew out a CD holder. "Superstars of the Super Bowl."

Scully laughed. "I knew there was a reason to live."
