02; butterfly clips & stolen flannels

Jasper Hale found himself once more focused on Evelyn Brown, and how just... radiant the girl was. Her hair was down again, but the front curls were pinned back with tiny pastel pink clips that resembled butterflies- the same ones Jasper remembered Alice dared him to wear once. He had personally chosen the green ones, but pink looked stunning on Evelyn, so he understood her choice.

She had given her jacket to a freshman girl, who Jasper figured she knew in some way, since Evelyn called her a nickname that turned the younger girl's cheeks red. So that left Evelyn in a pretty white top, and her arms bare- which would've been fine if it wasn't freezing. Jasper clicked his tongue against his teeth, and watched as the teenager turned down the jacket of Mike Newton, who was repeatedly offering it to her.

"You have work after this Mike, it's okay I promise." Evelyn said gently, her manicured hand resting softly on the teenage boy's shoulder- before the boy nodded and turned back to his group of friends. Jasper let out a soft sigh, before he moved from his seat next to Edward- and hopped into the vacant one next to Evelyn.

"You okay there Evelyn?" Jasper asked quietly, his nimble fingers already beginning to unbutton the black and white flannel Alice had dressed him in- which made perfect sense in this moment. The silly little seer lived and loved to meddle in his love life, so this was no exception. Jasper bit back a grin when Evelyn let out another squeak, her cheeks tinged pink- and not just from the shimmery blush that she had applied either.

"Just didn't think the auditorium would be this cold, I'm alright though Jasper. Thanks for asking." Evelyn's soft voice seemed like it fluttered around in Jasper's chest, and Jasper let out a quiet hum.

"Here." Jasper placed the flannel in Evelyn's lap, and Evelyn's head cocked- her brows drawing together. Jasper let a lazy smile fall into place, and he leaned back in his seat- eyes moving to the auditorium stage when the lights flicked on. "Seriously Eve. It's okay, you're cold and I'm leaving after this, just give it back tomorrow."

Evelyn let out a quiet hum, and she leaned forward so she could slip her arms into the flannel. It felt cold to the touch, as if Jasper hadn't been wearing it- but once the teen had it flush against her skin it warmed up rather quickly. Evelyn snuck a glance towards Jasper, and eyed his long sleeve shirt- before she nodded her head. At least he'd still be warm.

Tomorrow had come, and Jasper sat next to his sister in US History- knee shaking as his eyes were focused on the door. Alice placed a gentle hand on Jasper's knee, and Jasper pushed it away with a flick of his own.

"She should be here." Jasper muttered, the bell having rang ten minutes ago- and Evelyn Brown was not in sight. Jasper had brought her a small surprise, chocolate banana cookies that Esme had made... okay that was a lie, Jasper had made them but he planned to bring that to his grave. A plain black scrunchie was around his wrist, Alice had said he wouldn't need one, but just in case.

Jasper held his breath as the door to the classroom was pushed open, and held back a groan of utter pleasure at the sight in front of him. Evelyn Brown, pretty golden girl Evelyn Brown, was wearing his flannel. The shirt was tucked into a pair of jeans, and her curls were once again pinned back with butterfly clips, this time the green ones.

"Sorry I'm late sir- I was in the office." Evelyn quietly explained to the teacher, before she handed the man a teal colored piece of paper.

"College acceptance letters already Miss Brown? Well congratulations." The teacher grinned, and Evelyn ducked her head shyly as she made her way to her seat. It was hard for Jasper to not stare at Evelyn the entire lesson, and when the bell rang- the vampire found himself next to the teenage girl.

Evelyn smiled shyly at Jasper, and he felt his heart practically seize in his chest. Evelyn tugged her bottom lip between her teeth, and Jasper could feel his head swarm with static- which in this circumstance wasn't the best thing. It was hard for Jasper to not picture himself tugging at Evelyn's lip with his own teeth, and Jasper shifted slightly almost letting a sigh out when Evelyn let go of her lip.

"Sorry, I know you wanted it back it's just so soft." Evelyn apologized as she shouldered her bag- laptop being tucked safely under her arm. Jasper waved her off, and the duo walked out the classroom before they headed towards their shared Art III class.

"Looks better on you." Jasper flirted, his eyes widening a fraction when the words automatically slipped out. Evelyn failed to stifle her giggle, cheeks tinged pink and nose scrunching as she laughed.

Once they entered the doors of the Art III class, the whispers paused- every eye on the duo, and Evelyn shifted uneasily. Jasper placed a hand on the bottom of Evelyn's back without a second thought, and he moved the two of them to his table in the back corner of the classroom- and Evelyn offered a shy smile to Rosalie, who perked up at the sight of the girl.

They were working with soft pastels this week, and Evelyn rolled up the sleeves of Jasper's flannel with quick fingers- and Rosalie watched with a focus not many would have. Evelyn pulled her art supplies out of her bag, before Rosalie cleared her throat- her brows furrowed.

"I don't want to offend you." Rosalie started, and Evelyn lifted her head- head cocked slightly to urge the blonde on. "You dress different." It's not really a question, but it's a statement that was familiar to Evelyn, and the teen let out a small chuckle before she nodded her head. Evelyn knew she dressed different, clothes fitted properly, hair done, makeup applied, everything in place every day. It was different than the other members of her class, who all chose to dress for comfort.

"I do." Evelyn hummed as she plucked a yellow pastel from the small container she kept them in- and began dragging it along the thick paper of her multimedia sketchpad. "I know what people see when they look at me. And if I dress like I do, they keep their eyes away from my friends." Rosalie felt her heart swell at Evelyn's words, and watched as Evelyn swapped the yellow pastel for a bright orange one.

"How do they see you?" Jasper wondered, gold eyes flitting to meet Rosalie's, who's jaw is clenched in worry. The fact that Rosalie, his sister who was usually guarded of his family, was worried for or about Evelyn Brown, was something Jasper hadn't suspected would happen.

"Hair, eyes, teeth, legs, body." Evelyn murmured, hazel eyes flitting to meet Rosalie's, and Rosalie understood.

"You play to the object they expect you to be." Evelyn nodded her head at Rosalie's words, and both vampires feel a punch in their gut. Jasper had seen Evelyn as this golden girl, and he understood why- it was how she wanted to be perceived.

"I called that substitute teacher racist, and I didn't get in trouble. I was late to class and didn't get in trouble. I forgot to pay my parking fee and didn't get in trouble." The words roll of Evelyn's tongue as she blends in her pastels with her fingers, and Rosalie watches the girl with her unnecessary breath held. "Had I been anyone different, I would've gotten suspended." Evelyn let out a heavy breath, before she plucked out a white pastel and began to carefully add it to her paper. "Darling smart girl. Darling smart girl with a good body. Darling smart girl with a good body who wears short skirts."

"Why focus on anyone else than the girl who is asking for it." Rosalie finishes, her golden eyes meeting Evelyn's hazel, and at that moment both girls know that they're together. Not in a couple way, and maybe not in a friend way yet, but they're together. And neither Rosalie nor Evelyn plan on questioning that.

The table grows quiet, each of them finishing their pastel drawings- each of them growing closer, and Rosalie somehow finds it easier to breathe. Evelyn was endearing, in the way she tossed her curls around when she laughed, in the way her nose crinkled when Jasper called her radiant, in the way her cheeks tinged pink when one of them complimented her. She was easy to be around, and Rosalie smiled when Evelyn reached over to adjust the way Jasper was holding his pastel.

That was what he needed. And maybe, it was what all of them needed.
