02; apple pie

Evelyn sighed as she watched herself in her mirror, phone discarded on the counter as she braided her hair back. It had been three days with radio silence from any of the Cullen's, and to say Evelyn felt disheartened would be a weak statement. Evelyn held her hair between her teeth as she plucked her phone from the counter, before she eyed the text conversation she had pulled up.

It was the sixteenth of September, and Evelyn shook her head before she locked her phone and slipped it into her pocket. She didn't want to seem overly clingy, but she missed her friends- and didn't know what was going on. She didn't want to assume anything, but with the prophetic dreams becoming harder to ignore, Evelyn only thought of the worst.

The image of her on her knees on her own front porch screaming still hung in the back of her mind, and Evelyn held no answers. Isabella Swan had blown up Evelyn's cell the night before, a question on her lips that Evelyn couldn't answer. Not because she didn't want to do so, but because Evelyn was as much in the dark as Isabella was. Evelyn had mildly warmed up to the Swan girl, even if she still referred to her as Isabella, which the eighteen year old hated. It was easy to warm up to someone when you stopped them from bleeding out into broken china plates.

Evelyn let go of her braid from between her teeth, and slicked the now slightly wet section of hair against her head with a tiny pink barrette. Evelyn had already attended school, only having two classes that day- and Evelyn pretended to ignore the fact that the Cullen's weren't at school today either. They hadn't been at school since Isabella's birthday, even if it was only Alice and Edward who attended still. Evelyn wasn't sure why the two eternal teens had skipped, or why Jasper hasn't been there to pick her up- but it didn't sit well with Evelyn or Isabella.

The seventeen year old was quick to jog down the stairs when the doorbell rang, and she pulled it open quickly when she saw who it was through the peephole. Jasper Hale stood on her porch, towards the stairs, and Evelyn couldn't help but move forward so she could wrap him in a tight hug. He smelt like leather, he smelt like Rosalie, he smelt like home. Evelyn pulled away when Jasper didn't respond to the hug, and Evelyn fought against herself when she realized what was about to occur. Evelyn didn't want this, she didn't want this to happen.

"You haven't been around lately." Evelyn's voice is soft, almost to the point where it sounded like she was trying to coax an animal, and Jasper flinched slightly.

"I apologize." Jasper's voice is quiet, and Evelyn rocked back and forth on her feet slowly- her eyes on the ground as she nodded. "We're leaving Forks Evelyn. This, this isn't working out."

"You're breaking up with me?" Evelyn's voice is thick with unshed tears, and Jasper sucked air through his teeth as he nodded. "Is, is there a reason? A reason you have to leave Forks?"

"People are eventually going to start to notice things Evelyn. Carlisle should look ten years older than what he does, and we don't have answers." Jasper's words sounded fake, and Evelyn has half a mind to know they aren't his words. Evelyn's smarter than that, and knows that Carlisle probably told him what to say- and Evelyn can't help but be hurt by that.

"So just like that? A year of this down the drain." Evelyn lifted her head to make eye contact with Jasper, and he can't help the wince that bubbled from his throat. Her eyes are coated in unshed tears, which turned her usual dark green eyes to an almost candy apple green color, and Jasper had never hated a color so hard.

"You deserve something outside of my family Evelyn. A husband or wife, kids, the whole apple pie life." Jasper explained, and Evelyn can't help but let out a laugh. It isn't her usual laugh that Jasper adored, this one is sad and heavy. Evelyn's fingers moved to tuck some of her curls behind her ear, and Jasper takes an eyeful of the curve of her throat. Jasper's eyes pick out the freckles that dot her collarbones, the pearls that are in her ears, and the tiny scar right beneath her chin.

Jasper loves her.

"It's not going to be an apple pie life if you aren't in it." Evelyn practically whimpered out, and Jasper can't help but lift his shoulders in a small shrug. Jasper turned and gestured with his left hand, his right going to Evelyn's porch railing to steady himself.

"I can't give you this Evelyn. Get that into your head. If you're with me and my family, you will never have anything permanent." Jasper's voice is harsh, and he turned his head so he doesn't witness Evelyn's wince and slight stumble back.

"You always said I was it. That I was it. That what we had was all you needed." Evelyn's voice dropped into a whisper, and the teen let her eyes close so she wouldn't see Jasper shake his head.

"I lied Evelyn."

When Evelyn opened her eyes again, Jasper Hale was gone.

Evelyn felt herself fall to her knees on the porch, and a cry bubbled from her throat. Her hands clutch at her sides, even if she can't get a proper hold on her own body. The tears she had managed to hold back during the conversation with Jasper bubble over, and Evelyn doesn't let out a whine when arms wrap tightly around her. The smell of cologne tugged at her nose, and Evelyn knows the voice when it shushed her.

"He, he broke up with me." Evelyn whined, and Mike Newton pressed a firm kiss to the top of her head. Mike hadn't known that skipping school would've led to him witnessing Jasper Hale dump Evelyn Brown, but in that moment Mike was thrilled he decided to do so. He had a crush on Evelyn Brown back in middle school, and they had kissed during freshman year at his own birthday party, but that was years ago.

Mike Newton had Jessica Stanley, and he loved his girlfriend, even if they had yet to utter the words to one another. Mike shushed Evelyn again, and if he thought he'd win, Mike would punch Jasper in the face. The eighteen year old boy rubbed his hand in small circles on Evelyn's back in an attempt to soothe the girl, before he fished his phone out of the pocket of his jeans.

"Who and what would help right now Evelyn?" Mike questioned lowly, and Evelyn rubbed at her face with her palm in an attempt to not get snot on Mike's jacket.

"Jess, Jess and Angela." Evelyn whispered, not really knowing if the two girls would skip out of school to come keep her company. The three of them weren't as close as they had been during sophomore year, but Mike nodded quickly.

"Want to have a movie day?" Mike asked gently, and Evelyn felt herself let out a small laugh. Mike bit back a grin at this as he pulled Evelyn up, taking her laughter as a sign of agreement. "C'mon Brown, let's get all set up."

Evelyn smiled slightly at Charlie Swan, and let him wrap her in a tight hug- which pressed her glasses firmly up against her face. Her eyes hurt from crying, and she hated the tortoise shell frames, but it was better than shoving contact lenses into her sore eyes.

"Everything's gonna be fine sir, we'll find her." Evelyn promised, only knowing the truth because of the medallion that was still warm against her skin. Evelyn wasn't all that worried about Isabella, the seventeen year old knew that she had nothing to be scared of in the woods that surrounded Forks. At least, she didn't have anything to be scared of as of right now.

Evelyn found a spot on Charlie's front porch to sit, her phone in her hand as she rapid fired text messages to Isabella. The teen felt a warm blanket being placed around her shoulders, and Evelyn couldn't help but wiggle farther under the blanket. A chuckle caused Evelyn to lift her head, and a guy was standing in front of her with a sheepish grin.

"You looked cold." He explained and Evelyn let out a small laugh, knowing that her outfit of a pajama top and pair of leggings wasn't the warmest thing she could've worn out. Evelyn tapped her hand against the porch, and the boy quickly plopped down without further instruction.

"Thank you." Evelyn hummed before she locked her phone and turned to fully face the boy who helped her. He was cute, in a way that caught Evelyn's eye, but the hickey on the skin of his neck warranted Evelyn to not think of it any farther than a passing moment. His dark hair was cropped, and the tattoo on his upper arm stood out against his copper toned skin. "I'm Evelyn, Evelyn Brown. It's nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you Evelyn Brown." The guy said with a lopsided grin, his warm hand enveloped Evelyn's as they shook hands. Evelyn let out another small laugh, her chest felt slightly lighter than it had hours before.

"You gonna introduce yourself now? I think that's how it works." The tease rolled off of Evelyn's tongue quicker than she planned, and the guy's cheeks warmed slightly as he held out his hand once more.

"Paul Lahote, at your service."
