Evelyn Brown hummed to herself as she iced cupcakes, a small smile on her lips. Jasper watched her from across the kitchen, a grin on his own. Evelyn had volunteered to make a fresh batch of chocolate cupcakes for Isabella's birthday, only because Isabella had made her a pie for her seventeenth in the previous month. Evelyn felt that it was only fair that she did something similar for Isabella's eighteenth.
Evelyn had already wrapped her present for the girl, a small canvas painting of Edward and Isabella, respectively. It was of them laying on their backs in a meadow Evelyn had never stepped foot in, Isabella's arm strewn across her face as if to shield her eyes from the sun- while Edward sparkled in the sun's rays.
The medallion that hung loosely around Evelyn's neck did wonders, though Evelyn would never speak of it aloud. Evelyn knew Jasper hated the medallion, mainly because every time he saw it shivers rolled up his spine. Evelyn had grown accustomed to always wearing the jewelry, from showers to sleeping, but when she was around the group of vampires she called family- it was always tucked under her clothes.
For once Evelyn Brown felt in control of her gift, and felt like she was in control of her own body. The nightmares had seemed to fade, the visions that filtered in front and behind of reality disappeared, and the only ones that appeared to the seventeen year old was the ones Evelyn willed to the surface.
An iced mocha was pushed to be in arms reach of Evelyn, and the girl hummed as she took a small sip of the coffee. She wondered how tonight would go, realistically she knew something bad would happen. The pit of her stomach twisted as she smiled cheekily at Jasper, and her medallion seemed to warm against her chest. It would involve Jasper, Evelyn knew that much.
Evelyn smiled shyly at her boyfriend, her cheeks tinged pink as he walked slowly towards her. Jasper wrapped his arms loosely around Evelyn's middle, before he shifted so he was pressed against her back. Jasper pressed a small kiss to the crown of Evelyn's head, before he took a tiny step backwards.
"You really should get into the habit of tying your hair back." Jasper teased, before he very carefully raked Evelyn's curls back into a ponytail. The white cotton scrunchie around Jasper's wrist tied the style into place, and Jasper tightened it until Evelyn let out a hum.
"But I have you, my personal stylist, to do that for me." Evelyn hummed with a small laugh, before Jasper let out a fake scoff. Evelyn let out a giggle as Jasper nuzzled at her neck, before he placed a small kiss to the point where her shoulder and neck met. "You know you're gonna keep distracting me and this is important, Alice will kill me if I mess these up."
"Yes I will Jasper Hale!" Alice called from the other room, and Evelyn choked back a laugh as Jasper jumped away from her. Evelyn fell back into her routine off icing the cupcakes, and a smile found it's way onto her mouth as Jasper flipped the radio onto her favorite station. Maybe she was wrong, maybe tonight would go just how it should be.
Evelyn smiled widely at Isabella Swan before she took another bite of the cupcake that was in her grasp. The newly eighteen year old had loved the treats, which were fudge cake with a coffee icing that was in Isabella's words "to die for". The teen had also enjoyed Evelyn's present, with a promise to hang it up the moment she got back to her own house.
"Open mine!" Alice hummed, and Isabella rolled her eyes playfully as she slid her finger under the wrapping paper. A wince rang in Evelyn's ears, and Evelyn felt her eyes widen. Oh no, oh no.
Evelyn watched everything happen in practically slow motion. The cut on Isabella's finger, Isabella letting out a pained gasp, before the brunette lifted her finger to her mouth. Evelyn's medallion burned against Evelyn's bare skin, and the girl was quick to untuck it from it's place under her dress.
Jasper let out a growl, and Evelyn watched as Isabella was pushed back hard by Edward. Jasper pushed Evelyn out of his way, though Rosalie had her arms around Evelyn's middle- which steadied her quickly.
The crashing sound sung deep in Evelyn's ears, and she couldn't help but rush forward. She wrapped her fingers carefully around Isabella's upper arm, a smile on her face as she nodded at the brunette.
"I got you, it's alright." The blood seemed to wane under Evelyn's pressure, and Evelyn watched as Isabella's blood began to turn the white scrunchie around Evelyn's wrist red. Evelyn bit back her own whine, the china in Isabella's arm biting at her own fingers.
Evelyn glanced over her shoulder and made eye contact with Jasper, who's eyes widened as soon as he met Evelyn's. He let out a whine, and Evelyn shook her head firmly. Her mouth was set in a small frown, though her lips quirked up for a fraction of a second.
"Jasper, baby, I love you. But you need to get out." The whole Cullen family seemed to listen to her words, and Evelyn turned back to Isabella, ignoring Edward and Carlisle. Evelyn moved her fingers carefully, and Isabella's eyes are drawn to Evelyn's medallion- which seemed to glow even brighter.
"Isabella I got you okay? I need you to focus on me." Evelyn's voice is firm, and Isabella Swan nodded her head quickly. Isabella Swan knew that Evelyn had a dislike to her, it was painfully obvious, but this Evelyn seemed to care.
Evelyn sat in the bathroom, her fingers under the running water as she plucked tiny shards of china from her skin. Evelyn pretended to not notice her medallion, which still held a bright sheen. Evelyn pretended to not notice that as she pulled each piece of china out, her skin seemed to be perfectly fine. Not scars, no blood, no wounds left behind.
Rosalie drove Evelyn home in silence, and when Rosalie escorted Evelyn to the door with a Tupperware filled with the salvageable cupcakes- Evelyn offered the blonde a half-smile.
"Nothing is going to be the same, is it?" Evelyn questioned softly, and Rosalie let her shoulders lift in a small shrug.
"I'm not sure Evie, I wish I knew." Rosalie quietly said, and Evelyn nodded as she unlocked her door and took the cupcakes from the vampire's grasp.
"I was afraid of that."
