01; ichor
Evelyn Brown played with the ends of her curls as she sat curled against Jasper Hale's side, his arm cold and heavy around her shoulders. The auditorium was filled with the members of the senior and junior class, each senior clad in their graduation outfit except for their gowns. Evelyn had chosen a white dress that ended just above her thighs, and Jasper couldn't help but imagine her in a similar dress for their wedding.
The couple was back together, even if it had taken several steps back from where they had been, Jasper couldn't disagree with Evelyn's decision. Frankly, Jasper was thrilled she'd let him back into her life whatsoever. Even if he had made what seemed to be six million chocolate banana cookies, Jasper would do whatever it was to keep the Brown girl happy.
"Is your extended family coming to your graduation?" Jasper questioned softly, and Evelyn lifted her shoulders in a meager shrug.
"I'm not sure. My grandfather and grandaunt definitely, not sure if anyone else will- they attract a lot of attention." Evelyn kept her voice quiet as the lights dimmed, and their principal stepped on stage. Evelyn couldn't help but cuddle closer into Jasper's side, and Jasper fiddled with the pass that had been stuck to his shirt with the word 'visitor' stamped across. "My aunts may come, my moms definitely."
"Aphrodite and Persephone, yeah?" Jasper kept his voice soft, though his mouth spread into a wide grin at the soft giggle that Evelyn gave. The seventeen year old was still shy about saying her extended family's names aloud, though Jasper seemed to have no issue. "They aren't related by blood are they?"
"I don't... I don't think so? Persephone is my grandfather's half-sister? I don't think Aphrodite is related by blood. My grandaunt, Artemis, already promised she'd come with my moms and grandfather." Evelyn shrugged her shoulders, eyes trained on her principal who had started dancing across the stage with his wife as the band students started playing. "No matter, they're my aunts and uncles to me, doesn't matter if they're blood or not."
"Family don't end in blood." Jasper teased, and Evelyn's elbow nudged into his side playfully. Evelyn rolled her eyes in retort, and her fingers curled around her medallion as the slideshow started playing on the projector. Student pictures flashed slowly, and Jasper tightened his hold on Evelyn when the girl let out a tiny sniffle. Pictures of Evelyn flashed across the screen quickly, and Jasper smiled when Evelyn laughed at the last three.
The first, was Evelyn arm in arm with Persephone and Aphrodite. Their makeup was done extravagantly, with full gowns as well. Persephone's was a soft green, Aphrodite's a pink, and Evelyn's a lilac. The seventeen year old had explained they'd attended some gala to promote her moms' company, and her aunts had decided it was the perfect opportunity to dress up. Evelyn had adored the time though, if she was being honest. She usually hated having to play socialite, but with her aunts with her and a touch of expensive champagne, it had been fun.
The second, was Evelyn on the shoulders of her grandfather, though she had to bluff and say it was her cousin. Apollo had Evelyn perched on his shoulders, a wide grin on his face. Evelyn had her lips curled upwards, her left hand rested on the shoulders of her uncle, Hades. The right was perched on the shoulder of her grandaunt, Artemis, who had her head slightly resting on Evelyn's leg. The whole group was clad in swim gear, and the whistles that sounded at the sight of Evelyn and Artemis in bikinis made Jasper grit his teeth.
The third, was Evelyn's favorite. She was arm in arm with Jasper and Paul, lips spread in a grin as the pack and Cullen family scrunched close so she could get a picture. The coven and pack would do anything for the seventeen year old, and when she begged for a picture for the slideshow- the answer had been simple. Everyone was either mid-laugh, kissing, or simply smiling. It had been a fun event, even if Evelyn decided that seeing Alice and Leah make out in Jasper's truck bed had scarred her for life.
"I love that one." Evelyn murmured, and Jasper bent down to place a soft kiss to the side of Evelyn's forehead. Jasper hummed at the pure happiness that flowed from Evelyn Brown, who tucked her head further against Jasper's shoulder as her fingers tapped a tune on his jean clad thigh. "You're coming to graduation, right?"
Jasper couldn't help but let out a sharp laugh, before he bent his head slightly to press his lips against the corner of Evelyn's.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world, darlin'."
Evelyn let out a hum as she danced around the kitchen of Sam and Emily's place, her curls tucked behind her ears. Her phone was discarded on the guest bed upstairs, since she drained the battery after talking to her extended family all night. Persephone had called in distress, murmurs of Evelyn fighting dropped from her tongue, and even her aunt Athena- who she hadn't met yet, called to make sure she was okay.
The girls of the pack, minus Leah, were curled up in the living room- bellies full from the pasta bake Emily had stuffed them with. It was Evelyn's night to do the dishes, but the seventeen year old couldn't help but feel off. Something was coming.
Evelyn couldn't help but wander outside, lips pulled down in a frown as her bare feet hit the wet grass. None of the wolves were outside, Evelyn had waved off the need of protection, and Evelyn couldn't help but feel like that was maybe stupid. Evelyn breathed out shakily as movement was heard in the woods, and her head darted to the side, just as a figure emerged from the brush.
Evelyn hadn't seen a red eyed vampire up close, only having seen a picture of the Egyptian coven that Carlisle had shown her months before. Evelyn took a stumble back, and the ground gave an ominous tremble beneath her feet. Had this been what her family had tried to warn her about? Was this what she had missed?
"You should leave." Evelyn said softly, wet eyes trained firmly on the red of the vampire, who had their lips curled into a large grin. This wasn't Victoria, Evelyn wasn't even sure who it was. Evelyn's medallion gave a firm pulse, and the metal felt warm beneath her fingers. "I'm serious. Get out of here, or you're going to regret it."
"Why should I listen to you? A pretty little thing such as yourself?" The man purred, and the man bent into a crouch before he began to inch closer to the seventeen year old. Evelyn let out a shaky whimper as she stumbled back, before the sound of Claire's cries caused her to whine. The vampire gave a grin as his head cocked toward the screen door, and even though the blinds were drawn- he could smell the humans inside. "Big bad wolves leave their women behind."
"Get out of here." Evelyn hissed this time, before she drew herself up in height. Evelyn took a step forward, and the ground gave another grumble as the sky began to darken. The grass gave a sizzle as Evelyn took another step forward, and the girl curled her fingers in front of her body- as gold light began to curl around her fingertips. A coil of magic curled up her shoulder, before it ended in her hair, and the magic pulled the strands back into a firm ponytail. "You have one more chance. Get out of here."
The vampire gave a low hiss, and he took one more step toward Evelyn. The seventeen year old let out a hiss of her own, before she lifted her palm to her mouth, and sunk her teeth into her own flesh. Golden blood pulsed from her wound, and Evelyn licked her lips clean as droplets landed at her feet.
Evelyn breathed out softly, and the vampire's eyes moved to the seventeen year old's feet- where with every step she took the grass began to die. The vampire stumbled backwards, but curls of gold light stopped him from going any further. A growl began to rumble under his feet, and Evelyn Brown paused as her lips curled into a smile. A three headed dog had materialized behind the vampire, and the hound bowed it's middle head to Evelyn, before it let out another growl.
"I told you to leave, but you didn't listen." Evelyn's voice was airy, and she disregarded the shocked gasps that came from the house. She needed to deal with this without any distractions on making sure the girls were okay. Ichor continued to pulse from Evelyn's wound, and the girl took two steps forward- which Cerberus mimed. The hound was behind the vampire, breath hot against the undead creature's skin, and the vampire gave a whimper.
"Please, have mercy." The vampire cried, and Evelyn's lips tilted up just as Cerberus' jaws clenched around the shoulder of the vampire.
"You wouldn't have had any mercy on me." Evelyn tutted, and the vampire gave a scream as Cerberus gave a heavy squeeze of his teeth. Light and ichor still flowed from Evelyn's fingers, and the girl hummed as she eyed the ground. With a stomp of her left foot, a cavern appeared in the ground, and Cerberus' left head gave a yip.
"I am the granddaughter of Apollo, and you do not get the pleasure of killing me or my friends." Evelyn's voice was low, before she took a step backwards and gave a sickly sweet smile. "So instead of dealing with me, you get the pleasure of dealing with the Queen and King of the Underworld."
The vampire let out a scream as Cerberus leapt into the abyss, and with a lighter stomp, the cavern snapped together. Evelyn shakily turned to smile at her friends, the gold light and ichor washed away into nothing. Evelyn let herself fall to the ground, as lightning sounded around her, and her eyelids fluttered as she kept her gaze trained on the sky.
Dying in the place of someone Evelyn loved?
That seemed like the best of ways to go.
