Chapter 29: Corpse
Lilith/Sabrina
My car screeched to a stop right in front of the white Audi 100 Coupe we have been following. Leaning back in my seat, I brushed some hair behind my back, opening the windows up a little bit.
I bit down on my lip as I waited for the light to finally become green again. The quiet in the car was starting to make me feel incredibly uncomfortable, but I knew I couldn't start up a conversation myself. A shiver ran up my spine at the thought of what happened last time.
I tapped my finger gently against the wheel, looking over at Arciom from time to time. A simple look at the man gave me chills. His long hair was tied behind his head, with just a few messy loose strands falling out in certain places. His tattoos seemed even darker and meaner than before.
I had hoped that I'd never have to be near him again, of course, with my luck, those plans went to shit when we both became bodyguards. Arciom, I got, he was everything you'd expect from a bodyguard. But why I was ever trusted with that job would forever be a mystery to me.
Somehow, I seemed to be a charm that just had to attract all of the bad luck in this world. No matter how much good I did, this mission seemed to have dug a grave for me, and is slowly pushing me closer and closer towards it. I was fully expecting to be killed at any time during all of the missions I did.
The moment seemed to drag on for ages. The silence hung in the air and I was sitting with absolutely nothing to do, other than staring at the butt of the car in front of us.
I exhaled in relief when the light finally changed. As soon as the light amber turned into the bright green go, I stepped on the pedal and continued following behind Alessandro. I couldn't for the life of me understand why Matteo had appointed us as the bodyguards of Alessandro Armani of all people. I was fairly certain that man could handle himself in combat. He was the son of Matteo Armani for crying out loud.
"You're not fit for this job," Arciom suddenly mumbled, ruining my train of thought.
I turned my face towards him to better understand what he meant. I didn't want to take any shit from him.
"Excuse me?" I responded with gusto to make sure he knew that I was in control.
"You cried during a mission at whatever his name's club," he replied, laughing out loud with a cigarette between his lips.
My world started swinging around me as I revisited the day from my memory. I really couldn't help the waterfall back then, just like I didn't now, in the car in front of Arciom.
I hated myself.
"How did you know?" I whispered and my vision got blurry.
"Oh everyone knows by now. Whatever his name's is the uncle of whatever her name is who can't keep anything to herself," he cleared up but it only made it worse for me
My heart pounding, I looked back at the car and realised that it was gone.
Shit.
I pressed on the gas to speed up, and swiftly looked around, finally noticing it way ahead after a junction. The guy really had a talent in running off without being noticed. I almost pitied his parents.
A loud noise rang out in the distance. It almost sounded like a million dishes being broken all at once. The sound almost made my heart stop.
"Why aren't you looking at where he runs off to?" I almost shouted at Arciom, knowing very well that it was largely my fault. I couldn't believe that I had allowed him to distract me like that. I turned the wheel and drove down the same lane as Alessandro, until I finally found myself at the same conjunction.
I barely pressed the brakes as the car swerved in a curve, the tires squeaking loudly. We were going right back down the road again, following up where Alessandro went. Suddenly, I stepped on the breaks, almost sending Arciom flying out through the front window.
That's why you wear a seatbelt, dumbass.
I turned my attention back to the wreck.
Just ahead of us, Alessandro's car was laying on the ground, flipped around upside down, completely destroyed. The roof was dented into the inside, leaving barely enough space inside for a human to fit. Shattered glass was laying all over the ground. What was once a perfectly white paint job, had brown spots of mud and rocks all over it.
I didn't even want to know what the inside looked like. One thing I knew for sure, this car would never go back to its former glory. No matter how much money was swindled on it.
what the- my head spun, then snapped to the side when I heard shuffling. The world seemed to do a 180 turn for a while. The trees widened and expanded, becoming huge entities of almost 20 feet. The road blackened into a pool of black tar, slowly sinking our car into-
The sound of a car door opening snapped me out of it, and I finally noticed Alessandro being dragged away into an old building by a ridiculously strange looking man. He had the walk you would associate with someone who was hit in the head a little bit too hard.
The walk only one man could have. I squinted to take a closer look at the man, and all of the blood washed away from my face. I knew who the man was, and he wasn't someone we'd want in this situation. In fact, it was a man you wouldn't want near you in any situation.
Aions Gamel.
Arciom and I were quite simply, fucked.
"Okay," I said, unbuckling my seatbelt and turned towards Arciom, "there must be another entrance into that building, if we ca-" I trailed off when I noticed he was nowhere to be found. My eyes widened and I ran a hand through my hair, rolling my eyes. Of course he left me. Why bother waiting?
I looked around, and eventually found him standing behind a large tree, eyeing the other man with death in his eye. I thought my heart was going to stop at the sight. I hastily got out of the car, making sure to close the door quietly.
I didn't want to get killed for slamming a car door.
I ran across the plain until I reached the tree behind which Arciom was taking cover, hiding my own body out of sight. The tree was extremely near the house into which Alessandro was dragged.
To say I was devastated about this turn of events would be an understatement. But when I looked over at Arciom, he looked like a child in a candy shop. His dark eyes were open wide with excitement, and I could have sworn I saw a slight hint of red in them. They practically sparkled with glee. The grin on his face widened, revealing a row of oddly shaped teeth. He held onto the tree, his eyes trained on the house.
"It's only him. I am going to take that motherfucker down before he calls for backup. The war is on, Lilith! The war is fucking on!" He slapped my back, making my body shoot forward into the tree. I groaned as my chest slammed against the hard surface, making me feel a whole different kind of pain. I looked down to find lots of little pieces of leaves and wood stuck to the front of my shirt and sighed.
Arciom loaded up his gun beside me and took a deep breath. I straightened my back and stood beside him, ready to aid in any way he needed. It wasn't until I looked up when I noticed the glare he was sending my way.
"You're not fucking stealing my kill you pathetic cry baby!" He almost yelled out.
I opened my mouth to protest, but, of course, one look from the man made me lose my tongue. My mind would never forget the horrid lesson I learned that day. I could only nod as I moved back behind the tree, instead, getting ready to watch the guy do the work.
Arciom slowly walked away from me, getting closer to the house with each step. His movement was surprisingly slow and graceful. He creeped towards the building until he reached an open, or should I say, broken, window.
I watched him as he looked in through the window, while taking in a deep breath. He seemed to be carefully analysing the situation. My mouth opened. I had been fully expecting him to run in and start shooting at everything that moved. Maybe I had really underestimated this guy. Well, I thought so until-
"Who's your daddy now?" Arciom yelled and broke down the old door, shooting frantically all over the place. My eyes widened, then rolled as I watched the man lose his mind once again. I was convinced that Arciom killed the Chausse executive, and was about to get out from my cover to help when I heard another gunshot.
My body froze with fear. He did it. He actually-
Arciom's body fell to the ground with a loud thud, blood pooling around it from a hole in the middle in his forehead.
"I am an invincible motherfucker! No one can kill me!" A voice screamed from inside the building. I stared at the dead body of the man I considered undefeatable. He was laying down in a pathetic heap, his entire body now stained a dark crimson.
My form shook as I looked at him. Every hope of me defeating that guy vanished the moment I saw Arciom's body hit the ground. I considered running away. But I knew that Mateo would find me before I could escape anywhere. I didn't expect him to fancy the idea of me letting his son be murdered.
So there I was between a giant rock and the hardest place.
Slowly, I made my way closer. My heart became more and more restless with every step towards the commotion. First a captain, now the Capo's son, this wasn't looking very good for me.
"But I better fucking kill you before any other Armani cunts show up." The words came out from the building like an unexpected warning sign for me. One I obviously wouldn't take.
My eyes widened further. No you fucking don't- I thought to myself as I crept closer to the doorway.
Peering in, my eyes widened at the sight. Alessandro was completely beaten up, with cuts and blood all over his face and body. His right eye had a large brown patch around it and was swollen beyond recognition. The top part of his lips had a large cut slicing through it, with blood flowing into his open mouth. His clothes were ripped and tattered.
The man himself, Aions, was standing over him with a gun pointed right at Alessandro's head. My heart skipped a beat, and another, and I tried to decide what the hell I should do. I knew the situation wouldn't be easy to handle. One false move, and the true heir to Matteo Armani would be gone for good.
That would have been great news for the city, but terrible for the mission. I had to save him.
My mind raced with all of the different possibilities, but the more I thought, the closer Aions got to shooting Alessandro.
I ended up acting on a complete whim. I got out from hiding, ran into the building and charged at the guy, just as he was about to pull the trigger.
Aions fell to the ground, with me on top of him, both of us screaming. For very different reasons.
His gun flew out of his hand, and I tried to keep him pinned down. Both of my hands were on his shoulders, pushing down towards the ground with all of the strength I had in me. My legs were holding down his thighs as I sat on his stomach.
It was like a bull ride.
Aions writhed and moved, almost pushing me off him many times. I managed to hold him down for a while, and finally started reaching for my own gun to finish the dead.
Unfortunately for me, the guy underneath me took that opportunity. The moment of weakness that I practically handed him on a platter, and pushed with incredible strength.
I hissed as I fell off his body, my head hitting against the floor. The gun went flying out of my hand. I didn't pay any mind to it, or where it landed. My mind was preoccupied with the fucked up situation I got myself into.
I even managed to forget about Alessandro.
Out of nowhere, I sprung, and with two powerful kicks managed to make Aions' legs give out underneath him, sending him to the floor. I scrambled to get on top again, but this time, he gave a much bigger struggle.
There was no time to look for my gun again. No time to look for any kind of weapon. I had to use what I already had.
"You little slut!" He shouted underneath me while trying to contain his laughter. There was not a trace of fear in this man.
"You can't fucking kill me. I am immortal!" Each word louder than the last one and I could tell he believed every word that came out of his mouth.
I grabbed the sides of his face, and used all of my strength to hit it against the floor, then again, harder this time. Each hit produced a loud thud, but didn't give me the results I hoped for. His mouth opened, and his head moved to the side. I gasped when his teeth grazed against my hands.
The fucked was trying to bite me.
I continued to slam his head into the ground until I started to hear a loud cracking noise. I cringed at the sound, but sighed in relief when I noticed his body wasn't wriggling as much. Maybe, just maybe, this was enough. I started to reach for my gun to finally finish him off, when out of the blue, Aions screamed out and threw me off him, sending me flying into a nearby window. The glass shattered into a million pieces, the pieces flying everywhere.
I hissed at the pain, feeling several glass shards had stuck into my skin. The pain was immense, but I couldn't start pulling them out. I was in even greater danger now.
I looked up to see Aions staring down at me, his gun back in his hands, this time pointing at me. His face was a bloody mess and half of his hair had fallen out from his head. The look only made his grin creepier.
"Oh, you sneaky little bitch," He laughed out. "you're the little whore from that car! Aren't you? Did you run back to your daddy the other day? Did Matteo give you his winey to suck on?" Aions took a step back, getting comfortable. He didn't seem to be in pain at all. Could he really be invincible?
Not seeing me as a threat.
I was probably nothing to him.
"But you fucking die now, bitch. No more sucking on Armani dicks." He grinned widely.
My heart stopped.
I lean my head against the wall, not seeing any chance for myself. I practically committed suicide by coming into that building. Why did I think I could ever kill someone like him? That's a fucking child's dream.
I would be just another agent who never really got anywhere. Shot and killed during their first undercover mission. That sounded just about right. They'd hold a little funeral for me, pretend to care for a few hours, then go back to their own boring lives.
A rush of adrenaline shot through me. I didn't want that. I couldn't allow myself to be murdered at this age. There were still so many things I needed to accomplish.
I still had dreams, no matter how broken.
I looked around the glass covered floor to see if my gun was anywhere near. Finally, I noticed it a couple of steps to my right. Just out of my arms reach. I shifted my body, the shards digging deep into my flesh.
If only I could find a way to distract him for a se- Aions' laugh cut my train of thought. He looked ready to kill.
In a desperate attempt, I picked up a small shard of glass. I didn't even have time to aim, just threw it with all my might. A heartbeat later, I heard a loud cry, and I realized the shard ended up going right into his right eye.
"Motherfucker!"
"Mother- fucker-,"
Aions kept repeating that word in a loop while grabbing onto the shard. Soon, he started to pull it out of his face.
That was the chance I needed. I threw myself across the floor to pick up the gun. I fumbled with it, until I turned and shot at him three times.
The first hit was way off, and ended up hitting the roof. The second hit Aions' right shoulder, and the third got him in the chest. He fell to the ground, more blood pooling around him.
I stared at the bloody body, my breath coming to me in short, quick bursts. The man had just died by my hands.
I got up on shaky legs and walked up towards him. Looking into the man's face, I barely felt any remorse for him. I knew he wouldn't have returned the favour.
I aimed, and shot one more time.
Right in the middle of his head.
Just in case- I thought and dropped the gun to the floor. The world around me turned as I stared down at the body.
I've never had to kill someone in such a brutal way. I couldn't believe just how easily it came to me. It was easier than taking candy from a child.
I felt like I was about to break down, when I finally remembered that Alessandro was still there, staring at me in astonishment.
I gulped, grabbed my gun, then went over to Alessandro, each step causing agony.
"We need to get out of here, in case there's more of them," I mumbled and untied Alessandro. The ropes had cut scars into his body, leaving it ugly and bloody.
"I'll get us back to the mansion."
I let him wrap his arm around my neck and pulled him forward. After helping him get out of the house, I turned my gaze to look at him.
"We'll take my car, yours definitely won't be of much use," I said with a little smile. I continued to pull him behind me, until I felt a sharp pain in my neck. I screamed, my knees buckling beneath me.
"Be careful" I heard Alessandro say in a weakened voice. He was kneeling down on the ground, holding my hand in a gentle embrace. His dark eyes almost sparkled.
I nodded and he helped me get back onto my feet. We held each other as we walked back towards my car.
"You're not fit to drive," Alessandro said, shaking his head.
"I'll be fine-"
"I'll call for someone."
Just when I was starting to protest again, I screamed out in agony. The pain in my neck became even sharper.
One of the glass shards must have cut deeper into me than I thought.
I passed out before we even reached the car.
