Chapter 22: Sugar and Salt

Table 2

The table was lively with chatter, which was soon interrupted by the ringing of Donquixote's glass. The blond man stood up from his chair with a smile wide as the sky. To say he was ecstatic with the way things worked out would be a severe understatement.

"Kevin, my friend, you were always the light in my life and now that I see you with Steph out of all people, I can tell you without a doubt that you've never been brighter." Donquixote said as he raised his glass of champagne. The two other glasses reached the ceiling along with him. The glasses bubbled from the freshly poured drinks. Stephanie took hold of Kevin's hand and pecked his lips.

Her lips were curved into a beautiful smile that painted a ray of sunshine across her face. You could almost feel like you could see straight through it, into the beauty that was her soul.

While that would be how a normal person saw her, Donquixote knew otherwise. Only he could see the dark shadow covering her face, or the look of sorrow rooted deep inside her eyes.

"I am a lucky man, Don." Kevin said, looking at his two favourite people. The only people he could trust with his life.

Donquixote gently placed his hand on the man's shoulder, allowing some tears to rush towards his eyes. His lips curled up into a smile, creating a wondrous moment that could melt anyone's heart.

.-.-.

There's nothing to be scared about- Kevin told himself while he walked down the empty road with his hands inside his pocket in hope for some warmth. Ever since he started running for mayor late nights like these started becoming a regular thing, yet, he could never get used to the feeling of the quiet nights.

The wind slowly howled behind him sending a long shiver down the entire length of his spine. He pulled his coat tighter around him when he noticed something up ahead.

A tall silhouette of a man stood near a bend in the road. Every muscle in his body stopped moving, as if they gave up on their responsibilities. He couldn't move an inch from the spot he was standing in. His breaths came in small, short bursts, barely enough to keep his body alive.

He knew the risk of running for mayor in this god-forsaken city but now that the risk was presented right in front of him- he realized he wasn't cut out for it. Turning on his heels, he tried to run the other way but his body got intercepted by another man. One who was standing right behind him.

The man had to be an entire foot taller than Kevin and to say the least, he didn't look friendly.

"What is it that you said about the Raichand family?" The man grumbled with a mocking expression. The silhouette from before was now standing right behind him and had transformed into another full over-grown man.

"I-" Kevin finally opened his mouth but no words would come out.

The man grabbed onto Kevin's jaw so tightly that he expected to hear the sound of bone cracking, the street remained silent instead.

What actually happened made him wish the man had broken his jaw. The fear had made Kevin urinate his pants and start shaking like a dog.

He really thought that was going to be the end of his pathetic little life when the blonde man appeared from the darkness. He had a smile so bright it made him look sinister. Kevin had grown to love that smile, but at that moment he had never seen one quite so terrifying.

"Fellows I don't think violence is necessary." He said standing at a distance while observing the scene.

"Who the fuck are you?" The shorter of the two asked, letting go off Kevin's jaw. He fell to the ground while the other man kicked his face, breaking his nose immediately. Kevin winced in pain while both of them kept their head turned towards the blonde man in his usual pink suit.

"My name is Donquixote Santiago." The man said with a grin before walking closer. "And I don't think you want to hurt this man anymore."

The men burst into laughter as if the blonde man had just cracked the best joke in the world. Their laughter only stopped when Donquixote joined them as well.

"Maybe we should kill this Prince Charming first." One of the men said while Kevin watched the events unfold with his blurry vision.

"Go ahead, but I warn you that you will have a very angry Armani up your ass. And unlike me, he is far from being Prince Charming." Donquixote held his hands up in surrender.

"You think the Raichand family gives a fuck?" The taller man countered and pulled out his gun. The blond man wasn't phased at all.

"Actually, I think the Raichand family does give a fuck. Don't you know that Ajay already handed his leash over to Matteo? I guess if you must find out the hard way, go ahead. Shoot me. Put a bullet straight through my brain."

He leaned in closer.

"My only regret would be that I wouldn't be there when you see the mistake you've made."

His lips curled to the side to form a very confident smirk. Both men hesitated for a minute before one of them spoke up again.

"If you are wrong about this, you are dead," he said with a hint of hesitation in his voice while the blond man just nodded. Soon, they disappeared into the darkness.

Donquixote picked Kevin up and wiped the blood off his face. Kevin looked up to him but couldn't muster up a single word.

"If you're going to be a coward, Kevin, at least hide behind a wall." That was the last thing Kevin heard before he passed out from the pain, fear, relief and all sorts of emotions he didn't even know existed.

.-.-.

"Kevin, you have no idea how happy I am for you two. You are like the only family I have left in this world." Donquixote said before having a taste of the champagne. Before he knew what was happening, he was being pulled into a tight embrace by Kevin.

"You're like family too. In fact, there's something I wanted to ask you." Kevin moved away to make some distance between them while still holding onto his arms.

"I want you to be my best man, Don."

Donquixote gasped and teared up for the second time that evening.

"You have no idea how much this means to me. Of course, I will," he responded.

Stephanie kept looking at Donquixote, secretly admiring him. She could only imagine how hard it must be for him to pretend to be happy watching the love of his life getting married to someone else.

One day we'll finally be together, she thought to herself as she sipped her drink.

On top of the nearby bar, a man sat, listening to the exchange. It was Donquixote's very own henchman, Eli.

"Cry me a river, will you," Eli mumbled to himself before rolling his eyes further behind his skull as the bartender handed him his favorite extra dirty martini. The fact that he could see through the blonde man's facade, made eavesdropping on this conversation all the more entertaining.

Table 6

"Shut the hell up, you impudent snotface!" Sandra shouted and Alessandro slammed his head on the table in frustration. He had it up to here with his sister's bullshit. The last thing he needed was people's attention on them.

"You are literally the proof that god has a sense of humour" He mumbled rolling his eyes. The regret of going out with her was clear as day on his face but of course, he couldn't help himself. Like always.

"Well, you mister, are the reason he created the middle finger" Sandra replied, sticking her middle finger up to him. Even though she wanted to spend time with him too, her anger would always get the best of her.

"I still can't believe you actually went to that meeting! Again! You're all underestimating my-"

"It is literally impossible to underestimate you" Sandro cuts in.

"You can't go any lower."

Only a tornado could have stopped their argument.
