Chapter 14: Law But No Order
Logan walked into the meeting where all the detectives were waiting. All eyes were on him as he took in the features of the room. The police department wasn't any five-star hotel, but the condition of the Westwood Police Department was just diabolical. The flower pattern wallpaper was peeling off in several places to reveal a damp wall. Nobody really cared about this police department anymore. Not even the people working in it.
"Good morning." He said as he stood in front of the podium and turned on the screen. William Clausse's face illuminated the room and the detectives who were talking to each other started paying attention. Monica, the captain, was late as usual, but everyone expected that of her by then. Ever since she stopped giving a shit about the Law, Logan held the place down like a fort for her.
"This is William Clause, the third captain of the Arms Dealing department of none other than the Armani gang. He was found dead recently." Logan announced and everyone cheered for it, but he immediately stopped it. "This is no reason for us to celebrate. This is not our victory. Did we put him behind bars? No. He most likely died in a gang fight. Life has been lost because we failed to do our job." He said with a straight face and suddenly there was pin-drop silence. The silence that makes you nervous to even breathe.
"However, I believe in each and every one of you here. I know if we put our mind into it, we can put all those scum behind bars. We can get justice for all of their wrongdoing, which brings me to this." Logan turned towards the screen. "Today, I have a special assignment." The screen then showed the face of a ginger woman.
"Her name is Lilith Tumbler. Despite being a fairly new recruit, she has already taken his place as captain. I want to know more about her."
A bunch of people raised their hand, but the one he was expecting. It was Oliver Brown, the new detective. Ever since the day he joined, he went on about how he would change the landscape of the city. He didn't even understand the problem was inside the police department. His biggest obstacle was the law he upheld so dearly.
The lively Oliver seemed rather quiet that day, though. His blue tie over his white shirt was crooked and his brown hair was a mess almost resembling a broom. Although Logan knew why Oliver was like that. In fact, everyone in the department knew by now. Earlier that day, his girlfriend ended their relationship. Oliver moved to Westwood a few months ago, but Gina, his girlfriend, opted to stay back. It was bound to end from that day and everyone knew that. They had been fighting over the phone for a while now. And it was over.
"Oliver, I want you to take this responsibility," He said, and that was when the young man snapped back to reality. Logan handed him the responsibility to investigate Lilith from the Armani gang and concluded the meeting. Monica finally walked in but she didn't seem the least bit interested to know what was going on. Logan looked at her and walked back to his desk. Everybody started getting busy with their work. Logan looked around for a few seconds to observe before he slowly pulled his phone out and sent a text about the new development to the mayor. The protection for the Armani gang must continue and Logan will make sure of it.
