Jana: How to Forget the Forgotten

"Good morning, Jana. How have you been since your last visit?"

"Empty...as if I'm missing something...or someone. Confused. Like this isn't my life or something."

"Have you remembered anything since we last spoke?"

"Well, besides my three best friends...nope."

"THREE best friends?"

"Yeah, that's what Kat said. She said there were four but that friend was jealous of our relationship since the beginning of it ten years ago. Never thought I'd be a popular chick magnet but here we are!"

"Jana...does this same 'jealous' woman happen to be named Jessica?"

"Yeah, how'd you know that? Kat says she has some horrible anger issues to the point where she's tried to kill me plenty of times. That Jessica girl stalked me, hit me with so many things, and is an obsessed fan now. Good thing I don't talk to her anymore."

(...) "Jana, have you thought to ask your other friends about her? Instead of just listening to whoever Kat is? Well, speaking of which, who is this Kat person to you?"

"Nope. Never even thought to ask because I figured they'd tell me the same thing about her. They won't even talk about her and that's a good thing. Also, how would you not know who Kat is to me? She's my girlfriend."

(...) "Are you serious?"

"Yes...we met in high school together and met in some class. She tells me we got busy in the locker room and the rest is history. And it's strange because she said that one girl was toxic then as well. You know that one girl you just spoke about? Ain't that crazy?"

"So, just to clarify, you have no idea who this Jessica woman is to you...right?"

"She was a toxic friend that finally left my life once the courts got involved. Now, she's nothing to me. Something I won't understand is why my other friends would let her around me if she's always been like this. How it had to come to all the way to court in order for it to be squashed. This is ten years in the making. Good thing she's not allowed to even be in the same room as me. So how do you know her?"

"Can I give you something that might refresh your memory?"

"If it's of that Jessica girl, I'd rather not take it. But it would be nice to know how you know Jessica."

"Maybe these pictures can answer that question for you. Look at these. These are pictures from that evening. Look at them and see if anything comes back to you."

(...) "Let's see. There's Kat and I making out like usual. Then there's that Jessica woman coming into the studio to shoot the place up. How did you get these pictures?"

"They were taken from the cameras in the studio. Please keep looking."

"Well...one of those bullets flew to my head and that's all I remember from that evening. Can I ask why she's crying while staring a hole into me? She was the one who shot me."

"Jana, did you know you were still legally married to Jessica? The woman crying in that picture is actually you're-"

"BULLSHIT! You have to be joking. Never been married a day in my life and I don't exactly plan on getting married to anyone. Not even Kat. And why would I marry someone that's obsessed over me and shoots me? See? Now, I think you're the one confused."

"You think so? Well, check out these pictures then. These are of you and Jessica a little over five years ago...at your wedding."

(...) "If she was my wife, why would she shoot me? Why would she target me every chance she had? I don't believe this and won't believe it. In fact, these had to be photoshopped or some shit she pulled to make you believe I was married to her. Is that how you know her? You must be friends with her and she gave you those pictures."

"Jana-"

"Are we done here? Can I leave now? My time should be up now."

"Jana, I would like to know if you even want to remember her or anything about your past?"

"Not the past you're trying to convince me to believe. I already know who I am and who I was. Who are you to tell me about my past and you weren't even there? You wouldn't know. Can I please leave now? This is getting very frustrating."

(...) "Yeah, you can leave. Thanks, Jana. I'll see you next week."

"That's if I come next week but thanks."

****

Why the hell was she trying to make me believe that a crazed freak was actually my wife? I've never married anyone before and there were no plans to marry anyone soon.

As a free spirit, marriage is like being in prison for the rest of your life. The ring is like handcuffs that you can never take off unless you're going to bed. The certificate is like your public record and shows how long you've been there and what you're in there for.

If you're smart and/or rich enough, you can fool everyone else into thinking that you're actually happy with your prison mate of 20 years when you're really just staying for the money or because you have junior inmates with them.

Even if I wanted to live that kind of lifestyle, who else could I marry besides Kat? She seemed pretty cool with the idea that marriage just wasn't for me even though that's what she wanted. Kat and I've been together way too long for me to just go off and be with someone else. That's what Lisa said anyhow.

This Jessica bitch was crazy as hell. Making up stories about us being married and having children. Maybe a restraining order is necessary in this case but Lisa would have to get all of that together.

"Babe, you're out pretty fast. How'd it go?" a petite, tattooed blonde walked up to me with a bright smile on her face. She must've saw the complete opposite look on my face so her lips ran all over my face to try and make me feel better.

Somehow, it wasn't working. I didn't know how to feel after that. The only thing that came to mind was everything that Kat and Lisa told me. Haven't even talked to my other friends in a while and that was because they refused to go in more detail about this Jessica character. It became a big deal and we all got into an argument so Carmon told us all to go home.

"It was terrible. Can we just go home now? My head hurts."

Giving me an unexpected kiss to the lips to end her mountain of kisses, she took my hand and walked me towards the car. After that long kiss, I may have to rethink my ideas on marriage. Kat's got the best kisses.

So, we got in the car and went off to this exclusive brunch-like restaurant that Kat loves going to. During the ride, however, my head still hurt and the ten-minute session with my therapist was stuck in my mind.

This was just the second time I've seen this woman and things were already going up in flames. Maybe seeing a therapist wasn't a good call on the judge's part. The way she furrowed her eyebrows every time I refused to believe her made me tilt my head. She closed her eyes and tightened her defined chin every time I mentioned Kat. Her eyes watched me in disbelief whenever I talked about that evil wannabe groupie.

Like what was so important about those photoshopped pictures she was holding in her hand? How'd she get them and what the hell was really going on? She had to be friends with Jessica.

As soon as we got to the restaurant, we met up outside the building with Lisa. Older woman in her late 40s with dark brown shoulder-length hair, not exactly curvy but wide in size. Shaped like a wrinkled balloon with pale skin. She always wore a gray suit with a maroon undershirt and dark pointed heels.

She always made me wonder if she had a partner in her life because she stays in our lives all the time.

"There's my two stars! How are you two lovebirds doing?" she awkwardly exclaimed with a dark red painted lip. Planting a kiss on either of our cheeks, she helped us inside the restaurant.

To be honest, I'd rather be at the house making tofu burgers but anything for your partner, right?

"We're good, Lisa. Jana's just feeling a bit off after her therapy session. Now I'd like to know what happened because she said it was terrible," Kat explained before holding my hand in the booth and kissing me on the cheek once again.

I've never really seen Kat this lovey dovey over me. She was trying really hard to make me feel better but, in this moment, space was much required. Honestly, that's something that turned me off about Kat. It was too much coming from someone like her.

Katheryn was the lead singer of the band and she didn't really stay close to anyone besides me. She barely stayed close to me and I was fine with it. Sometimes, lovers need their space and she was also fine with that.

Ever since the judge ruled for me to see a therapist though, she's been all over me like a fucking sheet to a bed. Can't I get a little breathing room? Maybe she was the one that was making my head hurt. I have no idea.

"Now you know I'll get some answers out of her. Come on, Jana. Tell us what happened with your therapist or I'll go looking myself," Lisa mentioned as she sat on the other side of us.

A gush of cool air brushed past me and made me shiver a bit. Somehow, this helped me realize that the rest of the band was sitting in the booth as well. This wasn't the time to speak on the sesh seeing that it was living in my head rent free already and possibly making my head hurt. I was so confused on why the hell this session was stuck on my mind.

I didn't want to talk about what happened so, as the ladies ordered something, I greeted the rest of the band. The drummer happened to be on the phone but directing his words to Kat, saying "Not all of us are taco lickers, ya lesbo. Can I pick something else please?"

Taco licker...Someone else used to call me that but who did?

"Jana!" Lisa called out as a glass of water was placed in front of me, snapping me out of my lingering thoughts. And there goes the headache again.

"Babe, tell us what happened with your therapist today. Did she say something to you she shouldn't? If she did, you know we'll find out and..."

Looking into Kat's green eyes, I contemplated telling her what exactly happened. Just because I didn't want her hugging and kissing all over me after I told her how I felt.

"She just asked me about our relationship and asked if I remembered anything from our last visit. Besides the fact that I had four best friends-"

"Three, Jana. You have three. Tiffany, Carmon, and Rena," Lisa reminded me with a straightened face. Right, because who was the fourth one?

"Exactly, but that was all I could think of," I surrendered while sipping on my water. Looking up from my glass, Lisa studied my face as if there was something more to my story. Her eyebrows furrowed just like my therapist's did.

"Well, that's good then. You came out of there as if she said something disturbing to you. You said it was terrible so we just wanted to make sure she didn't try to manipulate you or anything." Kat reassured as she rubbed my back while kissing me on the cheek again.

They were all in my space, trying to get inside my head, and it stressed me the hell out. Closing my eyes, I tried to calm myself down, thinking of something that would help me relax with my lips still on my straw.

An image of two delicate caramel hands moving over mine came about in my mind. Different atmosphere. It was like we were in a living room and no one else was there except this person. The velvety feeling moved up my arms and onto my shoulders. Looking behind me, I couldn't see their face because it was blurry.

It was like I was getting a massage on my shoulders in real life. The fingers were painted a marble blue color and petite. I was thinking it was Kat until the realization hit. She didn't have tan fingers like the person in my vision. But the touch felt like heaven on earth.

Why couldn't I put the pieces together? Who the hell was I thinking about?

"Jana!" a holler from my partner called me out of my roaming thoughts and made me cough. Guessing I was choking on the straw and the food was here.

"Sorry. Just felt a bit overwhelmed. If you guys don't mind, I need to go to the bathroom. Badly."

Scooting out of the booth, my fingers ran through my darkened red hair in stress while speed-walking to the bathroom.

Fuck this. How the hell does my head feel like it's been ran over by a pickup truck and I haven't had a sip of alcohol in a while?

My breathing grew faster and heavier as I leaned over the public bathroom sink and studied myself in the mirror. The look on my face: flushed. My hair: dirty as hell. The tattoos on my skin...especially that big one across my chest.

Lowering my t-shirt, I spotted two dolphins on my chest and wondered where the hell they came from. My eyes also spotted a cupcake on my left arm and plenty of other tattoos that needed to be explained.

Mouth agape while studying the plethora of tattoos, I pulled out my phone just to Facetime Carmon. That's the worst idea, seeing that she's probably getting plowed by Trent right now. She took the longest time ever to answer my Facetime calls.

Once she finally answered, her naked body appeared and my eyes widened. "Bitch, can you put some clothes on?"

"It's not like you haven't seen me naked before. Plus, you used to love it. Now, you called me so what's going on?" She rolled her eyes as she covered herself with a silk purple robe.

So, I did date her? She said we never dated. Did we fuck? Smart move, Jana.

"What's this cupcake and dolphins on me for?" I asked while studying the tattoos like they were not supposed to be on my skin.

As soon as that question left my lips, Carmon watched me in shock and clinched onto her robe as if what I just asked was something that shouldn't have left my lips. What does she know that I don't?

"Is Lisa or Katheryn around?"

"Nope. They're out in the restaurant. Why do you ask?"

Sighing at my question, she sat up on the bed and prepared herself for an explanation by clearing her throat. Didn't think they had that much meaning behind them.

"They don't want us talking about her, but the cupcake is a symbol of what you used to call J-"

"Babe, I'm hitting the shower. Meet me in there in 30 seconds," her husband demanded while passing. A naughty smirk fell over her face and I just knew the answer wasn't coming now. They always have sex at the wrong times.

"Tell ya what, Jay. Call me in a few hours. Like six hours, okay? I'll tell you everything on a call with Rena. Please make sure you're alone, okay? Love ya, girly."

Soon, she hung up and my frustration grew. That didn't answer my question at all. Her getting plugged by her husband reminded me of a time when Kat and I tried to have sex. It didn't work out the way it was supposed to. She was the only one excited about it.

Sighing at the thought that I still had no answers to these tattoos yet, I took a deep breath and walked out of the bathroom to meet back with my company.

Maybe they've calmed down enough to where they're focusing on something else now.
