Chapter 5: And Some Other Rules

Woodsboro: Parking Lot

"And so, I kind of just.... let her have it." Y/N rants to Judy Hicks as they sit in the driver and passenger sear of the guy's guy together. It's one of their most common tactics for sneaking around, though like their occupation, they always make sure to be smart about it. "But.... maybe I was a little too harsh. I mean, she's still Sam, but she's no longer a teenager, and I think part of me forgot that for a few seconds."

"Grown up or not, she's still being trouble." Judy states with a seemingly knowing look as they both keep their eyes on each other while sipping coffee, sometimes glancing outside from time to time. "I think she knows as much we do why all this is happening."

"But would leaving really stop him, or them?" Y/N questions out loud with a conflicted expression. He wants to believe that their problems would go away instantly, but thinking about the Hollywood murders.... he's not so sure anymore. "I mean, maybe it would, but do we really want to throw another town to the wolves just because we already have a bad reputation for deaths?"

"It's not about our rep, it's...." Judy begins to retort, only to sigh as she realizes that she may be getting off-track. "Look, Y/N, this isn't really the reason I asked you to come here." She then finally admits, scooting herself so she's fully facing him despite the car's interior. Y/N hums, waiting for her to tell him. "After Vince and the hospital, Jed went through the phone records for Sam.... it wasn't Tara's number that called her....... It was yours." She finally reveals. "And eyewitnesses have been pointing fingers at you for the Vince murder after your fight with him.

Y/N blinks, having thought he mis-heard her at first until he sees the serious look on her face. "But I haven't called her in ten years." He brings up, the only thing he really can say after processing what this means.

"I know, and that's why I'm dismissing it. But...." Judy assures him before she a conflicted shrug. "You know how the others at the station feel about Y/N 'oddball' L/N, if they learned that one of their own is playing Dexter Morgan, they wouldn't be surprised if it was him." She states with a face that knows the cold truth, and so does Y/N.

"Fuck..."

"So that's why I held you back, because if Ghostface attacks the hospital again, the blame would be pinned on you if Tara died on your watch." Judy tells him with an apologetic voice, slowly putting her hand on his and holding it softly. "It has nothing to do with your abilities. I already know you kick ass, and you take protecting Tara very seriously."

"Damn straight." Y/N remarks with a grin, causing Judy to giggle for a brief moment, which is a rare thing for the woman in all honestly. He then returns her hand gesture with his hand. "Thanks for the heads up." He then says, to which the sheriff nods as if there wasn't going to anything that'd happen to make it otherwise.

"Of course."

The two are then silent for a few seconds before Y/N decides to show his gratitude physically, and the two begin shamelessly kissing in the front of the car. It slowly develops as the two try to find a suitable position for the session, though it only lasts ten minutes or so before Y/N's phone begins ringing loudly.

"Oh, crap, that's right..." Y/N mutters as he separates from Judy, pulling out his phone as he sees the reminder he left for himself. "That's my alarm, I gotta be somewhere in half-an-hour."

"For what?" Judy asks with a raised brow, noticing how he's purposefully not being specific. Y/N smirks, knowing that he can still half-truth her.

"Kids wanna hang out."

Woodsboro: Meeks Residence

Richie and Sam have invited everyone to one specific house which wasn't hard, given that three out of the five of those friends were people she personally knew, and one would follow while the other no-doubt had nothing better to do. Once all of them know, then the pressure will be on, and hopefully, this will blow over faster than the killer is expecting.

Right Sam parks and they get out of the vehicle however, another car rolls up to the Meeks house at the same time they did, and as the driver door opens and closes, she looks over to find someone she wasn't expecting. "Oh my gosh..." She silently exclaims, causing Richie to stop and turn around as they both watch Y/N approach the two of them.

"Hello there kids." Y/N quips as he rubs his face, Richie staring blankly at him as he stands in front of them. "You better not make me regret this." He tells Sam with a serious face, who nods empathetically, looking really glad that he showed up.

"I don't plan to." Sam tells him genuinely, prompting Y/N to nod. Richie looks like he has another joke/remark to make, but before he can, another truck pulls up, getting everyone's attention, especially when they see who it belongs to.

"Holy shit...." Now it's Y/N's turn to silently exclaim as he knows that truck well. Dewey Riley steps out of his driver's seat, wearing his badge and his gun tucked tightly into its holster as he walks over as if he just got back on the job.

"I've decided to temporarily assist you in your investigation." Dewey informs them with a professionally tone of voice, ignoring Sam's 'thank you' as he just walks right past them, and into the house.

"Geez, what'd you use on your teeth? Battery acid?" Y/N asks him out-loud though his insensitive-ness is ignored by Dewey who obviously intends to ignore that question. "What's he doing here?" He asks Sam and Richie with a look that begs to be put into the loop.

"Honestly? I have no idea." Richie answers for them with a shrug. "And, between you and me, just because that guy showered doesn't mean he should have a gun." He whispers to them with an oddly cautious expression.

"What does that even mean?"

"Gentlemen!" Dewey calls out to them, having been standing by the doorway, waiting for them. "Are we gonna get this how on the road or what? You currently have another five minutes!"

"Give us, one, please?" Sam requests with a raised hand, before nodding at Richie that he should go ahead of them. The boyfriend is obviously hesitant at first, giving Y/N a nasty look before mentally sighing as he goes inside with Dewey, who understands the look on Sam's face and empathetically obliges her. They close the door behind them.

"Look, I don't know what's going to happen in there, but I feel like you deserve to learn about this before everyone else does all at once. At least so I can tell you the specific version." Sam tells Y/N with a tone that indicates how much she needs to say this out-loud.

"Alright.... shoot." Y/N encourages with a nod, making sure to keep an open mind for this. Sam nods back, grateful, begging taking a deep breath as she expects a similar reaction that Tara gave her.

She then tells him everything that he didn't know as happening back then. She tells him how she was searching through her mother's things and found her diary, how she tried to innocently search through it at first, thinking it was going to be simple high school love, how she learned about the truth that her mom cheated on what she thought was her dad and was born because of it and confronted her mother about it, how her dad over-heard the entire thing and left because of it, how it made her take every single drug in existence to avoid the guilt she felt, how she got in trouble so she could push everyone, including Y/N and Tara, away because she wanted them to hate her. "... and all of that was because... the guy my mom slept with.... it was Billy Loomis." She then concludes, wiping some tears that she tried and failed to hold back when she knew they would come. Y/N blinks, looking down as he now process everything that Sam has said all at once. "I already told Tara.... and she now hates the shit out of me, so I understand if-"

"Okay." Y/N says with nonchalant shrug.

Sam blinks.

"Okay?!"

"Well, what do you want me to say?" Y/N asks with a slightly amused brow. "I... I mean, that is a little weird, if I think about it for too long. But... honestly, hearing that now explains everything." He states, feeling more relieved than anything. "I mean, it certainly explains your temper that Satan would be proud of."

"Oh, you're such an ass...." Sam mutters as lightly jabs Y/N's shoulder before walking into the house, prompting him to cackle as he follows. Even if her back is facing him, he knows that Sam's smiling too, likely glad to have that off her chest.

They then finally enter the house where Mindy is currently still welcoming Richie and Dewey inside. Needless to say, Y/N keeps his mouth shut from saying hi so he doesn't accidentally spit out something he's going to regret. "So.... how do you know so much about the Stab movies?" Richie asks after seemingly getting lore dumped on.

"Runs in her family." Dewey answers knowingly as they begin walking into the living room, with Y/N and Sam following behind them.

"Randy was our uncle... R.I.P." Mindy explains as she blows a kiss towards a memorial they walk in front of it, standing over the fireplace. "You said to bring everybody..." She then mentions, gesturing towards all of the teens who have all respectively shown up. Chad and Liv wave, Wes awkwardly smiles and Amber looks bored out of her mind.

"Feels like we're having a sleepover..." Y/N sarcastically remarks as he rubs his hands together. "A military-like sleepover."

That's about all the jokes he can make as another adult walks in while holding a tray of snacks. "Oooh, suspects!" She exclaims excitedly as Mindy grabs a piece of popcorn and she sets the tray down on the coffee table. "My brother would be so proud!"

"Hey Martha." Dewey greets with a happy grin, causing the woman to look over and recognize him standing there.

"Dewey, Hi!" Martha eagerly pulls him into a hug upon seeing him, wondering how she didn't earlier. She checks out his attire and current condition and makes up a strong opinion in her head. "You look....." She begins to comment, only for nothing else to come out of her mouth. So instead, they nod to each other awkwardly.  Y/N opens his mouth to help finish the sentence, but Sam instantly sees it coming and holds his mouth closes with her hand.

"Yeah!" Dewey says to break the ice that suddenly came out of nowhere. At least that means she hasn't changed, and besides, nothing she would say would bring down his mood any further at it is already.

"How's the wife?"

Oh for-

"We're good mom, thank you." Chad quickly chimes in with a dismissive look, desperately trying to save her mom some grace without her knowing it.

"Okay kids, have fun..." Martha humorously says before doing the 'eyes on you gesture' to everyone that isn't her children or Dewey. Richie looks over at the other adults and raises both his brows at them as a comment before all of them now get to the main topic at hand here.

"I asked Mindy to call everybody here because..." Sam addresses everyone with a big swallow. "There's something I have to tell you."

A few minutes later, everyone's staring a Stab true crime documentary, but with Sam's commentary. The teens on the couch, except for Amber on a chair due to needing room, all process what they've just heard while Sam sits on the right angle of the couch with Richie while Dewey sits on the chair next to that side along with Y/N who needed a folding chair. "So, let me get this straight..." Chad finally speaks after minutes of silence that felt like it was going on for an hour. "You're saying that you're the daughter of Billy Loomis and that, what, that one of us is the killer?"

"The killer told me he knew my secret." Sam states as she stares back at everyone else with a mostly confident expression. It's weird talking to a bunch of people that you're in some detective show, but she knows that have to discuss this. "He attacked Tara and Y/N to lure me back here."

"But then why immediately go and murder some douche-nozzle that was stalking Liv?"

"Why does it have to be one of us?" Wes brings up with a curious tone, feeling like they are all getting singled out here because it's usually always teenagers. "What about deputy Dewey here? Maybe he's the killer." He proposes before turning to the man himself. "No offense."

"None taken, but what's my motive?" Dewey asks with a raised brow, wondering how the kid came to that conclusion.

"You got stabbed a billion times, got dumped by your famous wife, and then crawled into a bottle. I think it's safe to say, you're on the suspect list." Wes points out with a mental shrug, causing Y/N to glare at him.

"Wow, kid, that wasn't cool at all." Y/N criticizes with a disapproving glare as he pops in a jelly bean, causing Wes to squint at him. Where did he get those?

"Yeah, maybe you're the killer." Dewey deflects, before staring down at the ground in shame. "Because that.... cut deep..." He remarks with hurt all over his face, causing Wes to awkwardly look away at the two of them.

"That 'douche-nozzle' is connected." Amber then chimes in while holding her phone, causing everyone to turn to her. "I just googled him, his mom is Leslie Macher." She states before glancing over at the two cops. "Stu Macher's sister."

"Who's Stu Macher?" Liv questions with a perplexed face, causing Mindy to roll her eyes at her.

"He was Billy Loomis's accomplice, a real.... loony-toon." Dewey answers with a knowing expression, remember just how unhinged he was the few times he saw him. Though he would always write it off as him being goofy.

"Okay, but that makes it sound like all the attacks are based on people who's related to previous Ghostface killings." Y/N points out, bit shows a skeptical stance on the theory itself. "I'm not related to any of that, I'm..." He pauses mid-sentence, letting off a shrug instead while shifting in his seat. "I'm just me."

"Probably because the attacked wasn't meant for you, it was meant for Tara, but made to look like it was you." Sam deduces as she starts putting some pieces together. "And if that's the case, that'd mean that the first three attacks are based on people related to the original killers."

At that moment, Mindy's face explodes as she feels like she just got hit with Sherlock's abilities. "Oh my gosh, he's making a Requel!" He exclaims in an overly-excited manner than she probably should, getting everyone's attention.

"A what?"

"Or, uh, like a sequel, fans are torn on the terminology."

"Gosh, please speak English." Chad begs as he rubs his face, wishing that now's wasn't the time for her to go on another rant that only two or three other people could understand.

"Okay..." Mindy gives her brother a look before sitting up straighter, feeling like she's been blessed by her uncle's power and is now onto something. "Remember the Stab TV series that debuted last year?"

"Oh yeah, the one which that just released it's second season, right?!" Liv anxiously recalls, glad to finally understand a reference that's made after three months of not getting it. "You know, I really liked the first one."

"Of course, you did, you have terrible tastes."

"I hate you..."

"The point is, the hardcore Stab fans hated it!" Mindy emphasizes, possibly being on that part of the spectrum as well unless she just wanted the moment to throw shade at Chad's girlfriend. "You got on 4chan, and Reddit, all they're talking about is how MTV Stab pissed on their childhoods! How they completely made a story unrelated to the original, how they changed the mask and the backstory, and how Roger Jackson isn't the killer's voice."

"What's so important about the killer's voice?" Richie asks as if it's not that big a deal.

"Careful, you'll get her off subject." Wes warns with eyes that look like they went through Vietnam when the question came up.

"What's so wrong with the TV series?" Amber questions out loud with a shrug, not seeing the picture either. "I mean, Kieran Wilcox fucking rules." She remarks, unknowing causing Y/N to freezes as he abruptly closes his eyes.

[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]

"Now, are you gonna tell me who you are?"

[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]

"Uh, obviously, but that's not Stab." Mindy corrects her as if having superior knowledge of the subject, which, technically, they don't have too much reason to challenge her about. "Real Stab are meta-slasher whodunit movies, full stop!"

"What's the big deal with all this, anyway?" Y/N questions with a big eye-roll, trying to change the subject after a sore spot was mentioned. "It's just a movie."

"No, it's not. To some people, the original is their favorite thing in the world. The movie that made them love horror, the movie their mom or dad showed them when they were ten that bonded them together!" Mindy insists, with a knowing and heart-filled passion about it. "And God helps anyone, who slightly fucks with that special memory, who makes a TV adaption that they think disrespects it." She relatably remarks, standing up as there's no way to stop her from monolouging now. "It sounds like, because the TV show is being heavily focused on more, our killer writing Stab 8 themselves, a requel, as an act of vengeance!" She declares, clapping her hands with a smirk of someone who knows she's right.

"Which is...?" Dewey questions with a raised brow, everyone pretty much being settled with whatever rules or elements she has to say at this point.

"See, you can't just reboot a franchise from scratch anymore, the fans won't stand for it." Mindy starts, going on another monologue that Dewey and everyone else was expecting. "Black Christmas, Child's Play, Flatliners, that shit doesn't work! But you can't just do a straight sequel either.... uh, you gotta build something new, but not too new, or the internet goes bug-fucking-nuts. It's gotta be part of an ongoing storyline, even if the story shouldn't have been ongoing in the first place. New main characters...." She points to Sam, Richie, and Y/N, though the teens also point to themselves as well as if they've had lots of screentime up to this point. ".... yes, but supported by and related to, legacy characters." She then points to Dewey, who blinks at her. "Not quite a sequel, not quite a remake, like the new Halloween, Saw, Terminator, Jurassic Park, Ghostbusters, fuck, even Star Wars. It always, always goes back to the original!" She finishes as she grips the DVD casing of the first Stab movie.

"Are you telling me that I'm caught in the middle of fan-fucking-fiction?" Sam asks her with a pretty offended attitude, which can't be blamed since he likely was expecting a more personal motive. She would've taken mis-placed vengeance over this any day of the fucking week.

"Not just in the middle, Sam..." Mindy responds as she sits back down on the coffee table, right in front of her. "You're the star."

"So, not to put, like, too fine a point on it, but...." Liv chimes in, nervously clapping and rubbing her hands together. "According to 'requel' rules'...... who's next?" She asks her, the main question that's on everyone's minds.

"Going by the pattern, whoever it is has to be connected to someone that came before." Mindy states with a sassy shrug, feeling like that part was somewhat clear earlier. There's now a moment of painful silence as everyone thinks about themselves and knifes flowing into their chests, or doing the stabbing...

"I'm starting to regret coming here...." Dewey mumbles, to which Y/N agreeingly nods.

"You and me both, old man."

"Oh my gosh, my mom's a character in one of them!" Wes realizes with a horrified face.

"No one cares about the shitty inferior sequels, Wes, you're safe." Mindy assures him with a massive eye roll. "With Randy as our uncle though, you and I are probably screwed." He mentions to Chad, though, catching him off-guard.

"W-Wait, what?"

"Or you're the killer and this whole.... what, elaborate monologue is just you covering your tracks." Richie accuses with a snarky grin, pointing the fingers back at her due to her making it seem like she's blameless in all this.

"I think it's pretty clear who the killer is at this point." Mindy responds with a small chuckle, which once again, gets everyone's attention.

"Who?" Sam asks, prompting Mindy to stare directly at her.

"You." She confidently answers, causing everyone to blink at look in her direction. "It makes perfect Requel sense."

"It actually does make a lot of sense...." Chad agreeingly comments with a finger to his chin, and soon, the other teens start nodding as well. Sam looks at them, and Mindy, as if they are crazy, before turning her head to the adults for some help. However, Dewey shrugs, Richie doesn't say a word, and the only one who is semi-denying it is Y/N who's silently shaking his head, but doesn't voice his opinion out loud. He's just.... Eating jelly beans.

"Fuck this..." Sam grumbles with a loud scoff as she stands up and storms out of the door, causing Y/N to wake himself up back to life.

"Sam, wait!" Y/N calls out, only to get the door slammed in response. Standing up, he goes to follow her, though briefly stops and angrily turns to Mindy. "You know, by that logic, you all better sleep with one eye open, because I'm gonna be slitting someone's throat tonight." He scolds them all before rushing out the door, leaving everyone else confused.

As he speed-walks out of the front door, he catches Sam who sees him walking towards her. "I'll see you later." She dismissively tells him with a painfully blank tone of voice.

"Sam, wait." Y/N begs as she gets into the driver's seat of her car, practically ignoring him. "Sam, hold on a minute..." He repeats himself, but the woman is still inserting the keys and starting her engine. "Sam!"

At this point, the front door opens again, and now Richie is jogging outside just in time to catch her backing out of the garage. "Sam! Sam, wait!" He calls out to her as well, but the girl is now back on the road and driving away. "The first rule of these movies is we don't split up!" He yells, but it's too late. She's long gone.

Y/N lets out a massive exhale, before turning over to Richie. "A little too late, don't you think?" He criticizes him with a dirty look, bumping his shoulder as he walks towards his own car. Though in hindsight, that was also directed at himself.

"Fuck you." Richie swears as he glares back.

Meanwhile, Sam is still driving down the street, far away from the Meeks house as much as possible. Her blood is boiling as she hasn't even put in the coordinates for the motel yet, feeling like staying in this car until she's ready to get out.

Feeling her anger from inside, a visitor pops up from the backseat, which Sam can see from her rear-view-mirror. "The nerve of that girl, right?" Billy comments bitterly as if he's trying to relate to her. "How dares she accuse you of murder after all you're trying to do to save her ungrateful life?"

"Really.... not... in the mood right now." Sam mutters back, but in reality, when is she ever in the mood?

"Sam, Sam, Sam..... There is a killer on the loose. He's threatening you! He's threatening your sister, and he's threatening your ex who I'm still surprised is showing hints that he gives a shit about you!" Billy reminds Sam as he leans closer, his tone getting serious. He's clearly not putting up with her dismissive responses anymore. "Are you gonna run away from who you are like you always do or are you gonna use it?"

"I'm not like you!"

"Oh really?" Billy sarcastically questions as he raises a skeptical brow. "Then how else are you gonna survive? I say accept who you are, let's get out there, find out who's doing this, and CUT SOME FUCKING THROATS!"

"NO!"

Suddenly a car comes up from a left turn, causing Sam to quickly slam on the breaks right before she's crushed by the large van. It passes by, thankfully unharming her. As the woman breaths heavily, almost thinking she was going to meet the afterlife for a second there, she looks up and sees Billy gone.

That was too close...
