Maren Desario
"No, it was a surprise because the answer was so obvious. Clearly, we thought Billy was the killer, and when he actually is, we're shocked," I justify to Ozzy, who has stayed here for a while. We've been watching slasher films. We watched the original Psycho and we plan on finishing the Saw series, but right now we're in the '90s with Scream.
"No, I think it was really a lack of creativity," Ozzy renders. "Slasher films were still testing the waters of surprise."
"And I was still surprised," I come back.
"Do you think it's wrong that we're watching these and people are getting killed by a guy who wears this very mask?" Ozzy inquires, cocking his head to the side.
I shrug and shake my head. "No. The way I see it, we're educating ourselves."
"What sicko took the plot of a ninety's movie and made it real life?" Ozzy thinks out loud, clearly disgusted. Who wouldn't be? "It's demented."
"Yeah," I agree. "But we also have to live with it."
"So clearly, whoever is doing this is after Reyna. But why?"
"Well, in Scream, Sidney paid the price for something she couldn't control. Maybe
Reyna falls under the same circumstance?" I propose. There's a stiff silence before I add,
"But maybe she doesn't."
"You mean what if Reyna actually did something to be attacked?" Ozzy rephrases, tapping his chin to think about it. "It almost makes sense. I mean, she makes the perfect victim. Her mother cheated on her failed dad and hid the secret of a twin brother. I'd bepissed if that was me...not to mention, she was the only person ever attacked who survived."
"It can't be," I dismiss. "It's Reyna. We were practically born arm in arm."
"Actually," Ozzy interjects. "That was Makai."
Flashing him an evil eye, I growl, "You know what I mean."
"While we're on the topic, Makai fits under the perfect victim profile."
"Ozzy..." I mumble.
"So, what? He tortured himself?" I doubtfully inquire.
Ozzy shrugs. "The ultimate cover-up."
"Pretty cynical," I confess. "But objective. So on that same note, it could be you."
"Ah, come on," he sighs, playing with the ends of my hair, which streak has been died red. "You don't really think I'm the killer, do you?"
"I sure hope not," I state.
"I have no motive," he counters, arms around my shoulders.
"Sure you do," I render. "The new kid wants to make a good impression. He makes a bunch of deaths and problems to fix so he can gain the trust of everyone and start off with a bang."
"Okay, well we have outcast Maren," he softly says, tracing random shapes on my folded legs. "Here for sweet revenge."
"What makes you think revenge is sweet?" I inquire, contemplating the expression.
"I'm just assuming by what I can see," he smoothly replies. Without any further notice, he leans in for a slow kiss, two fingers on my jaw to tilt me towards him. Softly, our lips touch and kiss with fragility. Warmth spreads throughout my body. I've never been kissed before, let alone kiss back. "It tastes pretty sweet, at least."
Smiling, I click play on the remote to continue watching Scream. "I could've stabbed you in the back just then."
Ozzy smiles and digs into the popcorn. "It's worth it."
I settle into Ozzy's side and watch Scream.
