I don't think any of us were really there for Frederick, as terrible as it sounds. By "any of us" I mean Enzo, Aero, Makai, and myself. We were there for Reyna, who was probably here to completely bury the actions of her past. She knew Freddie was never coming back, and nothing she thought she could do can resurrect him. In my opinion, his death wasn't a total tragedy. He agreed to work under a mass murderer. Fred wasn't exactly innocent. But he is dead and we need to acknowledge that.
"Hey, Reyna," a girl with black hair and stunning blue eyes greets. There are a spray of freckles across her pale skin and over her nose. I recognize her as Reyna's tutor. They didn't select me because of my "personal friendship" with Reyna and assumed we wouldn't actually study. What crap. But from what I know, Kellin Kodiak is pretty cool. She sports five piercings in each ear, hidden by her choppy black pixie cut. Also for the occasion, she has taken out her studded nose ring.
"Hey, Kellin. Did you know Freddie?"
She snorts and nods. "Yeah. I knew him really well. We seriously dated last year."
Reyna's face floods with guilt, and almost unnoticeably, Enzo grazes her hand with his, letting her know that he's here. "I'm sorry for your loss," Enzo apologizes.
"Things happen," Kellin dismisses. "At least it's all over now."
Kellin is pretty quick to dismiss Frederick and deny that the killer isn't done. It's pretty suspicious. But then again, I'm the sheriff's daughter...everything is suspicious to me. I'm even on my own suspect list.
The list goes as follows:
1. Enzo: How could he not be on the list? He's psychopathic and confessed to torturingMakai. Not putting him on the list is almost a crime in itself.
2. Hanzo: It seems silly, but think about it: whenever there was something bad happening, like the Spring Carnival or the Della incident in the hospital, Hanzo is MIA. But also, so is...
3. Ozzy: He just shows up and knows everything about us. How suspicious. However, I don't see a motive for Hanzo or Ozzy, so that's where those suspects hit a dead end.
4. Reyna: It's cruel, but Reyna's only injury has been a middle finger broken. It isn't hard to break a finger and hide in a closet. She's killed Freddie for sure. Those are total red flags, but then again...it's Reyna. She couldn't really be the killer.
5. Myself: I know I'm not the killer, but I have to be objective.
6. Della: This one was a hard pill to swallow. Adelina hated her mom – it wasn't a secret. Now, she's dead. At the Spring Carnival, Della wasn't there. And since she's been dead, nothing bad has happened. It's like someone associated with Dellamurdered her because...because why? Maybe Adelina was an associate of the real killer and she was a loose end. That makes more sense, but it leads to the conclusion that there's still a killer out there.
7. Lastly, there's Aero. He's the perfect golden boy who falls under the "new kid" stereotype. He murders people so he can fit in their place. Simple dimple, easy peasy.
The ceremony is taking place at the local Solaris park, a place where Freddie and his friends would "often hang out after school," which meant Freddie was into drugs. Today, the sky is thick with clouds, which is nice because we're all wearing black and the sun is attracted to the colour. We're all depressed, already. No one wants to be depressed and sweaty, too.
There's been a flimsy stage set up in the soccer field, and a portrait of a smiling Fred has been decorated in flowers. An announcer hops up and checks his microphone before speaking. He discusses how loved and kind Frederick was. "Not only did he knew how to play ball, and the ladies," the kid jokes.
Kellin wrinkles her nose. "Disgusting."
"But he knew how to be a friend. Fly high, Fred," he cheers before raising a glass to the air and drinking. A couple of football guys on the field do the same.
"Leave it to the football jocks to turn a mourning ceremony into a drinking event," Kellin mumbles. "Can you believe these guys?"
"I can believe it," I tell her. "Which is what's bad."
Kellin looks at me for a moment with her intense blue eyes. "I guess I'd rather this happen than another murder spree," she says, shrugging in her black leather jacket. "Your friends went through the crap."
"They did," I note. But I didn't. That must make me seem sketchy on everyone else's suspect list. "But at least it's over now."
Kellin smirks. "Is it?"
"You trying to say something?" I ask, blowing back my hair. I've replaced my dyed Bluestreak with a black one to fit the timing of everything. "Because since the killer being gone, I prefer blunt statements to intricate riddles."
Kellin shakes her choppy haired head. "No, not at all," she assures, stuffing her hands in her ripped, black skinny jeans. "It's just...no one ever confirmed a killer. They could still be out there. Keep your guard up is all I'm saying."
I nod, taking in the information like my dad would've; always be sceptical of everything, but also consider all the information.
Mentally, I add Kellin Kodiak has suspect number eight.
