Makai Keanu
"Don't worry, lil' sis. I gotchu," I assure my nerve-wracked Reyna. I burst in through the doors as she was about to confess that she murdered Freddie. Saving her from that was the least I owed her. I mean, she killed the guy for me.
Currently, everyone has been dismissed besides the crew and the captive.
The crew: Mastermind Keanu (that's me, hehehe); Surprisingly Bold Reyna; BadassBiker Kodiak; Ozziously Dying for Attention Oscar; I'm a Psycho but I'm Also Dating YourSister Enzo; Quiet Yet Not-So-Violent Aero; and Most Likely to Explode in a FreakyScience Lab Maren.
The captive: Adriano Santia-Gotta-Go.
"Come on, you know I didn't send those!" Adriano protests to the crew and the principal. "Why would I get involved with this? Why would I take Makai? We're buddies."
right. We used to do the great "party crawl" every other weekend where we throw a party, and when it ends, we crash everyone else's. But now he's suspect of working withType.
"Drugs and money," Mr. Desario chimes in unexpectedly, coming up the stage steps.
"Mr. Santiago, according to your report, you've had a few run-ins with the law with cocaine. Why shouldn't we suspect you?" "Um, I don't know..." he poorly defends. In my opinion, if you don't already have a reason why you're not guilty...then you're probably not guilty. "From an objective perspective," Reyna starts. "I think if someone can make a firewall around an entire campus and take out every camera in a hospital, then they can hack a phone."
"Also, while I was held captive, my masked torturer mentioned getting money. Adriano doesn't have that kind of cash. No offence, Rio," I apologize.
"No, no you're right. Thanks, man. Hey, you coming to my party this weekend."
Outwardly, I laugh. "Dude, duh."
Kellin clears her throat unnecessarily. "So what do we do about this, then?"
"Well, Kellin. I'm glad you asked..."
To the side, Reyna sighs, knowing what's coming next. Back in the good old days, Della would've playfully insulted me, Hanzo would've rolled his eyes, and Allister would eagerly wait for me to continue. "Great," Reyna sighs.
"We could try to trace any hacking connection," I offer. "In the computer lab, I noticed something was off with Adriano's phone. I thought it was because he could get through the firewall, but maybe it's because someone else was inside of it. Perhaps, with the lack of cameras, they used the one in Rio's phone?"
Approvingly, Reyna nods. "When did you get so smart?"
"Reyna, it's hacking. That's the only thing I'm good at."
"That and partying," Adriano pipes up.
Sighing, I pat my friend's shoulder s if he were a child. "Yes, Adriano, yes."
"So can I have my phone back?" Adriano inquires Sheriff Desario.
"No, we'll need to inspect it."
"Ugh," he sounds with disgust. "When will I get it back?"
"Don't worry," Desario mumbles. "You'll get it by the time you have your damn party."
Adriano grins. "Yay."
"Jury dismissed," Desario declares. "Go home."
Slowly, we all depart. Adriano with Kellin; Maren with her father; Aero with Reyna; Ozzy alone. I was alone, too, until a giant hand clamped down on my shoulder. Wheeling around, I turn to see Enzo. As usual, he looked cocky and confident. He was letting his hair grow back out and I can't say I wasn't upset that he didn't look terrible. "What?" I grouch at him. "I think you meant to touch the other sibling."
"I'm not blind," he snaps, face construed into anger. "Look, Reyna and I aren't getting along right now. I don't think she trusts me –"
"Sheesh. Took long enough," I grumble.
Glaring, Enzo demands, "Shut up. Anyways, she won't believe me when I say this but she'll believe you. There's another accomplice.
"There are tons," I argue. "All the kids at the hospital, the ones at the carnival...Freddie."
"No, not like that," he manages through gritted teeth, straining to control his temper. Flustered, he takes a deep breath. "Type is the head of it all. For a while, I was his accomplice: the one who took people and their blood."
Chuckling, I call him a vampire.
"I'm not nearly that pale," is his answer. "Anyways, I thought it was just us. But there is someone else doing Type's dirty work, or maybe they're just picking up the slack I left behind. I'm just warning you guys that there's another player on the board."
Eerily, I size up the guy. There's no way in hell I can take him in a fight, so I should tread carefully. "You said you left all that torture stuff behind. For what?" I interrogate."For a girl? You decided to give up your ways and become a changed man because you fell in love with some high schooler?"
Enzo rolls his golden eyes and clenches his fists. "Think what you want. I don't have to explain anything to you."
"See," I continue as if he never spoke. "I find it all hard to believe; it's too cliché. You may very well feel something for my sister, and she may very well forget you're psychotic, but I will always remember who you are and what you can do. And, Enzo King, you don't fool me."
Enzo remains silent. Whether he's fake-contemplating or actually rattled, I'll never know. I'll also never care.
"Now, if you'll excuse me," I bid, taking out my phone. "I have people to invite to Adriano's party. You know what? Why don't you come along? It'll be killer. Maybe you'll like it."
"For someone who remembers my potential so well," he speaks in a low, grizzly tone.
"You sure like to dance around some raw topics. And if I don't fool you, Makee Canoe, then I sure as hell should scare you."
Enzo leaves in a fit of predatory rage; stride longer than usual and hands balled into fists. Despite his age, he's ultimately composed. That's the scary thing about Enzo: even when he's beating himself up or being called out as a liar, he's always composed and put together. He's impossible to read unless you know him well.
I should be worried for my life. Enzo could explode and finish the job he was meant to do: kill me. I should be panicking and running to Reyna to tell her that her boyfriend has written me a death wish.
Instead, I throw that death wish in the shredder and burn the pieces. I take a deep breath and shrug. I'm Makai Keanu: I was tortured and thrown into the Solaris Hospitallockdown. Though Enzo does shake me, he doesn't scare me shitless anymore.
The fact that I'm still alive gives me confidence. My friends who, in any normal circumstance, should have outlasted me have died. Allister was so sweet, she'd never make any enemies; Della was as tough as nails, she couldn't be broken; Hanzo was so cautionary, he never falls. I was Makai, too goofy to realize there even was a killer.
But here I am.
And here Reyna is, too. She wasn't supposed to be involved in this; no one ever noticed
her existence besides us.
It turns out, we're both resilient.
Maybe I'm more like my sister than I thought I was...I mean, besides loving Enzo, obviously.
But I think that's a good thing.
