surprise

In which we're both famous singers and our schedules and tours are crazy, not to mention almost the complete opposite of each others. However, we both occasionally manage to surprise one another at our shows.

@scotthoying: really miss him

I stopped scrolling through Twitter when I saw the tweet that he had most recently sent out. I gently tapped on the screen, then stared at a slightly larger copy of it for a few moments. I read it more times than I'd like to admit, then began scrolling through the replies. I chuckled to myself as most of them said something along the lines of "aw", "dads", "scomiche", or my personal favorite "get married already". I quickly favorited his tweet, then typed out a response as well.

@mitchgrassi: yeah i guess i kinda do too

I only had to wait a few minutes before I got a reply.

@scotthoying: i would hope so

I began smiling again, but was cut off at the sound of someone clearing their throat.

"Yes Kirstie?" I asked, turning off my phone and looking up to her. She had one hand placed in the middle of the steering wheel, head on her other hand, staring at me out of the corner of her eyes.

"Who has you all smiley?"

"Do you even need an answer?"

She smiled a bit. "No." She turned back to the highway before glancing at me again. "As long as I have your attention right now, can we talk about tonight?"

"Sure, what about it?" Kirstie was about to speak when my phone began ringing. I glanced down at it, then silently pleaded with her to let me answer it. She turned back to the road, which was all I needed for an answer.

"Hello?"

"Hey Smitchy."

"Hey handsome." I glanced back to her Kirstie who was rolling her eyes.

"How are you? How was your show last tonight?"

"I'm good, and it was good... really good. The crowd was loud and I absolutely love this set."

"I still need to hear it."

"Yeah, I know," I said laughing lightly. "You can do it any time now."

"I'm going to wait until I get home. I only have two more shows."

"As much as I love touring, I wish I only had a handful more. I'm still going to be traveling right up until Christmas." He groaned loudly, causing me to laugh. "So what are you doing?" I asked, changing the subject.

"Just talking to this amazing boy."

"Shut up."

"I'm trying to be cute."

"You are, I promise. But seriously, what are you doing?"

"Nothing right now, I've only done a few things today."

"Like what?"

"I was resting my voice all this morning. I've been rehearsing with the band lately. Remember that one song I played for you a few weeks ago?"

"Oh, yeah. Wasn't it called XO?"

"Yeah, that's it. I went over that one a few times with them. I'm thinking about performing it tonight."

I smiled widely at that comment. "You should, I love that song."

"You love anything I do."

"That's true."

"What is Mitch Grassi doing right now?"

I looked up from my lap and to the open road ahead of us. I panicked for a split second, obviously not able to tell him what we truly were doing.

"Hanging out with Kirst. Shopping."

"That's fun, tell her I said hi."

"I will."

"Well, if you two are having some girls time, I'll let you go."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah. As long as we'll talk again tonight."

"Of course. I love you."

"Love you too. Bye, babe."

I pulled the phone away from my ear and ended the call. I put it back on my lap before turning back to the blonde.

"He says hi." She shook her head, but a small smile spread across her face. "Thanks again for agreeing to this."

"Yeah, well, I guess as your friend and manager, I have to treat you once in awhile."

I smiled. "So you wanted to talk about tonight?"

"Yeah. I obviously let Esther know, that we'll be there. And she's obviously okay with that. I'm not sure what's going through your mind for actually surprising him, but we'll question you later on that." I nodded my head, deciding to remain quiet.

It was rare that Scott and I were even remotely close while touring, so when we were only a few hours away, I had to jump on the opportunity. To me, it was a miracle that she agreed, but the timing just happened to be perfect, where she almost couldn't disagree.

We were about halfway done with our road trip when Scott called me, and the call made the last hour or two fly by. Before I knew it, we approaching the arena, then driving to the back of it. Scott's manager, Esther, greeted us by the entrance, immediately bringing us in out of the cold. All 3 of us made it through the arena without incident and to her makeshift office.

"Where is he?" I asked once we all sat down.

"He's doing a meet and greet, then a quick soundcheck with the fans. You'll have to stay hidden in here when he comes back." I nodded my head. "So what's your great plan for tonight?"

I chuckled lightly before answering. "Um... can I go on stage?"

"Go on stage?"

"We keep getting bigger and bigger with our surprises, it was gonna come to this eventually. Remember when he crashed my meet and greet last year?"

"Yes. I'm still not sure how it didn't end in total chaos."

"I'm glad it didn't," I said, remembering the moment.

"Do you have an idea of when you want to go out?"

I nodded my head. "Did he ever mention a song called XO?"

"Yeah, its one of the last songs on the set list."

"Can I go out right before that? I've heard the song before, maybe I could sing with him."

"You really do have this all planned out, don't you?"

"If it was a perfect world, that's what I'd do."

I watched as Kirstie and Esther turned to each other, a smile on both of their faces. I wasn't exactly sure what was going through their minds, but Esther eventually turned back to me.

"I think we can do that."

My eyes lit up at her words, and I found myself getting up and hugging her. "Thanks babe."

She then excused herself, telling us she needed to let the crew guys know of the change, and to check on the blonde. Kirstie and I stayed in the office, keeping ourselves busy until later that night. Esther came back once or twice, then again, announcing that he was officially on stage. She then led me through the hallways to his dressing room. I was left alone then, which I ended up being thankful for.

I walked through his dressing room, looking at the few items in it. There were bags of clothes, obviously, but the thing that caught my attention was a small picture frame on the desk in the room. I knew it had to be his, as I had heard of the frame before. He mentioned it to me once or twice, but never allowed me to see it.

I smiled at the picture in the small frame. The one that was currently up was taken a minute or two after he surprised me last. I ran my hand over his figure, so glad it wouldn't be much longer until I saw him again. I quickly went to the couch in the room, sat down, then worked on opening up the picture frame. I wasn't too incredibly surprised at the lack of diversity in the pictures.

There was one or two of his family, a few more from some parties that he threw. The remaining ones were all of me, whether it be from awards shows, my concerts, or from the few moments we got to be completely alone. I spent much more time then necessary reminiscing. I set the frame back down, then finally focused on getting ready for the show.

I chose to wear a simple black button-up and black skinny jeans. It wasn't my show, nor would I be on long, so I didn't need to go over the top with an outfit. Then again, he would be out there. An undetermined amount of time, I heard a knock on the door. I went towards it, opening it to see Kirstie and Esther.

"Okay, 10 minutes left. Are you ready?" I nodded my head, finally leaving the room. Esther led me through the backstage, Kirstie trailing behind us, and I could hear him getting louder with every step. We stopped walking when we finally reached the edge of the stage. Esther turned to me then and began talking.

"Okay, this is normally the part where I give Scott a mini pep-talk, but I doubt you really need one." I laughed lightly before turning to Kirstie.

"Any advice from you?" She just shrugged her shoulders.

"Just make it cute."

"Make it cute?"

"Um, we're obviously going to be recording it."

"I hate you two."

At that point one of his many crew guys came up to me, then handed over a microphone. A moment later I heard him singing the last notes of a song, and then the crowd cheering. He remained silent as they went on, before I heard his voice again.

"This next song is brand new one that you guys for once don't know about. Believe it or not, I can keep a secret from y'all."

I turned my head to Esther and Kirstie who nodded their heads. I took a deep breath, preparing myself, then took my first step onto the stage. I few steps in, I finally looked up from the space in front of me and to the crowd. For the whole tour, he said that he was excited for tonights show, as it was one of his largest ones and he completely sold it out. Sure enough, there were thousands of people in the arena, and I became more and more excited with every step.

I smiled when my eyes finally landed on the blonde. There was a long runway leading off of the main stage, into the crowd, and Scott was at the very end of it. There was a small platform at the end of it, allowing him to walk around a bit. I passed by his band and quickly waved to them, before approaching the catwalk. I took my first steps onto it when he spoke again.

"This song is called XO, and as suggested by the title, it is about someone."

At that point, the crowd began to cheer. I saw Scott laugh, thinking they knew who he was talking about. However, I knew they were finally starting to notice me, and they couldn't be more ecstatic.

"Yeah, okay, you guys know who it is."

I stopped walking about halfway down the runway, even though I could be right by him within a few seconds. I took that moment to smile, then bring the microphone to my lips and finally announce my presence.

"Are you sure they do?"

The crowd cheered loudly again, and only then did Scott's hand drop to his side. I'm sure he instantly recognized my voice, but I was also sure he was very confused as to where it came from. I smirked as I imagined his face, furrowed in confusion. Then, I broke out into a smile as he finally turned to look behind himself. He quickly spun around, then brought his hands to his face, covering his mouth. I smiled widely, then slowly began walking towards him. He glanced from side to side, most likely unable to believe that I was here and in front of him. In his defense, I couldn't believe I was doing this either.

I began walking towards him again, taking my time to smile and wave at fans that I passed. I kept looking up at the blonde, laughing as he kept a hand by his face. I finally reached him, stopping a foot or so away from him. It was his turn to move, and he wasted no time gathering me in his arms. The crowd roared, loving this moment just as much as we were. He pulled away after what seemed like just a second, then tried to talk to me.

"What are you doing here?" He spoke off mic.

"I'm surprising you."

"I know, but this isn't close to your next show."

"That's okay."

"I can't believe you." I smiled sweetly at him before grabbing his hand, pushing it and the microphone back up to his mouth.

"Here, talk into this. I'm sure everyone recording this wants to hear you." I heard a few fans laughing, and I smiled as well. He opened his mouth to speak, but ended up turning around, shaking his head.

"Are you guys seeing him too?" He asked. The crowd cheered again, and it was my turn to laugh.

"I'm one hundred percent real."

"So what are you doing up here, besides, y'know, surprising me?"

"I was thinking I could sing with you."

"You really want to sing with me?"

"Of course."

"And... you wanna sing XO?"

"I'd like that." He grinned widely, then turned back to his band, nodding his head. I only had moment to prepare before they were playing the first notes.

We had to improv the actual song, as we had never rehearsed it together. I was now especially glad I heard it ahead of time, and had been obsessed with it when he had me listen to it. I was a bit nervous as to how it would go, but a few nods of the head and some pointing got us through it.

It felt so good to be singing with him again, or to even just be next to him. However, it did take quite a bit of power to stay focused on the song and not let my thoughts drift to him. He must have been having the same problem, because I heard him stumble over a line or two throughout the song. It took a lot of restraint to not start giggling.

The song was done too soon for my liking, but when it happened, Scott and I were smiling like crazy as the crowd went on cheering. At that point, there must have been something about my body language that was tipping him off, because he was soon begging me to stay on stage.

"No, don't leave me."

"You need to finish your show."

"We can improv the rest of it."

"You're silly. Your fans want to see you, not me."

He smiled lightly before bringing me into another hug. It was shorter than our previous one, or at least it felt that way to me.

"Can I get a kiss before you go?" He asked off mic once we pulled away. A few people nearby heard us, then yelled, causing me to roll my eyes. However, I complied and quickly pecked his lips.

"Finish your show now." I patted his shoulder and squeezed it gently before leaving his side. I had no doubt that he was watching me, which would have explained why it took awhile before he spoke again.

"My boyfriend, everyone." The crowd cheered, and I turned around one last time to quickly wave. I began walking again, then finally corrected him.

"Fiancé."

"Yeah, yeah," he said. I could practically hear the eye roll. "Love you, Mitch."

"Love you too," I said, then a second later I was walking off stage. I handed my mic back off to a crew guy, then made my way back to the two girls. They started walking with me, speaking moments later.

"You two are gross."

"Thanks, Kirst."

"Just to let you know," Esther cut in, "the show will be over in about 15 minutes. I'll bring him back then but we'll let you two have some alone time." I heard Kirstie snicker.

"Alone time? If you're thinking about that, its not gonna happen... at least not here," I added as an afterthought.

"Well either way," she said, slowing down as we got back to the dressing room, "we'll let you two be."

"Thank you guys again." They simply smiled, then continued walking, leaving me outside the room. I stood there for awhile before finally slipping into the dressing room.

It was a long 15 minutes. For a brief moment, I even thought Scott's suggestion would have been better. But instead, I just stood anxiously in the room, not sure of what to do with myself for the remaining time. However, I stayed in place until I could start to hear footsteps. A little bit later I heard a soft knock on the door. I glanced up from my feet, and a second later, Scott was walking through the door. He immediately closed it behind himself, then finally looked up at me. I bit my lip, attempting to hold back a smile from from taking over my face. He wordlessly started walking across the room, and I reached out for him. I wrapped my arms around his neck when he was close enough, his arms going around my waist. He quickly picked me up, squeezing me twice as tight as he did on stage. He spun me around once before setting me back down. He kept me close, then began peppering kisses all over my face.

"Scott," I whined. He pulled back to stare at me, but I instantly brought my hands to his face and pulled him closer. "Kiss me." His answer was quick, I could barely process my own words when he connected our lips. What little sparks I felt earlier were so intensified, and I never wanted it to end.

"Damn, why didn't I get a kiss like that out there?" I asked once we had finally pulled away.

"We needed to have a little moment to ourselves." I leaned in to peck his lips again. "You're amazing, Mitch."

"Just for surprising you?"

"There's a million reasons why, and this just happens to be another."
