destiny
Soulmate AU in which you and your soulmate can communicate with thoughts.

I was in a local Starbucks and had just barely ordered my drink when I heard a commotion. I stepped off to the side, then glanced at the other side of the shop.
The two were my age. Maybe a year or two younger, but still school age. The girl was wrapped tightly in her soulmates arms all while trying to grab onto him in someway. They eventually, barely moved apart. The boy brought his hands up to cradle her face, gently brushing what I assumed to be tears off of her face. I decided to try and get a hold of my soulmate as he pressed his lips to her forehead.
"I saw another one again. Please don't say it." His response came a minute later.
"Destiny."
"Take that back you monster."
"Are you pouting?"
"Maybe. I think you would take it back if you saw me doing so." He stopped responding to me then, and I took a moment to look back to the couple.
I saw soulmates meeting far too often for my liking. Of course I was happy for whoever it was, and it was always adorable watching them see each other for the first time. However, he made every sighting a bit worse.
For Mitch and I, we had started talking when we were young, still naive enough about the world to not know who we were talking to. We only talked a handful of times about simple things. And then we weren't so naive. We slowly began to find out through friends and parents and teachers just what was really going on, and just who was in our minds as well. Our conversations just escalated from that point on.
I soon fell in love with him, which was quite obviously the goal. However, I started to grow impatient with him once high school came. About halfway through that stage of school, my friends starting being able to drive, which allowed them to seek out their soulmates. I longed to do the same thing, but early on, he convinced me to never do that.
He was a believer in destiny. Destiny beyond the fact that soulmates were a true thing. Destiny like the fact that we shouldn't go out of our way to find each other. We would run into each other eventually, and that was apparently enough for him.
He would never let any little detail about where he was slip. He knew that if I heard anything, I would be on my way there within no time. He kept it hidden where he was from or whenever he was going on vacation. It was times like this I wish I could have read his actual thoughts, not just when he decided to talk to me. It'd be impossible for him to hide things from me then.
I had asked him countless times for any bit of information. Whenever I asked, he gave me the same answers, which were already vague. He would only tell me basic things about what he looked like. All I knew at this point was that he had brown hair and brown eyes, which actually didn't help at all. I wondered if he realized just how common that combination was. The only time he would get detailed about himself is when he would tell me the things he liked to do. He could go on forever about the next play he was doing at school, or the newest song he was obsessed with.
And then there was me. I told him everything. I told him exactly what I looked like, where I was from, and everything I did. I gave him updates on everything, just on the off chance he finally gave up on destiny and wanted to find me. But so far, he hadn't.
My eyes tore away from the couple when I heard my name being called. I quickly grabbed my drink, then left the coffee shop. I was walking outside again when he began talking to me again.
"How's senior year so far Scotty?"
"Not too bad, how's it going for you?"
"I'd say the same. Its just been an endless spiral of essays and presentations. Hey, did you get a letter back from USC yet?"
"Actually I did."
"And you just bothered to tell me?"
"I've been thinking about it all day, I don't know where you've been."
"But you didn't tell me. What did it say?"
"I got in."
"Scott! I'm so proud of you. I smiled to myself. Ugh, I can't believe how smart and talented my soulmate is."
"I'd stop thinking like that. If you keep raising your expectations, you're gonna be disappointed when we meet."
"No way in hell, Hoying."
-
"Scott. Scott. Scott. I wish I knew how to yell in my thoughts. I swear to god if you're purposely ignoring me right now. I can practically hear you laughing."
God, I was trying so hard to hold my laughs back. While he made me smile nearly nonstop, I couldn't let a laugh out in the nearly silent classroom. And what he didn't realize is that he practically was yelling at me, and for the last 5 minutes. Theoretically, I could have answered him right away and then stopped paying attention to the teacher droning on. But, as cruel as it was, I just let him go on for another moment. He finally stopped attempting to get my attention, and I then answered him.
"What's up?"
"What are you doing that's more important than me?"
"I'm in class, but you're the most important thing to me."
"That's sweet."
"So what is it?"
"I got my first acceptance letter."
"Really? Congrats baby! What's the school?"
"That's the best part. USC."
It took everything in my power not to drop my pencil and completely disregard the rest of class. I couldn't wrap my mind around what he just said. He was going to college. The same one I was going to. I was finally going to be able to meet him.
"Scott. Answer me. You had a heart attack didn't you. This will be a very sad life for me if you did."
"You're kidding me."
"Its the truth, sweetheart."
"Please tell me you aren't considering other colleges. Please tell me you're going there."
"It sure looks like it."
"What happened to destiny? I mean I'm so happy, but still."
"Destiny needed a little coaxing."
"So you applied after me?"
"The day after to be exact."
"I love you so fucking much."
"What a coincidence, I love you too."

The last months of my senior could not have gone slower. I realized that it only went so slow because of what was now at stake, but I couldn't help but be annoyed.
Then the day of our graduation came and sped by. Before I knew it, I was on a plane traveling halfway across the country. I was quite nervous the whole trip, especially once I landed, but I just kept reminding myself that I would have Mitch there. Eventually.
Mitch only gave me an update when he finally got on campus, as I requested. However, no matter how much more I begged, he wouldn't say anything else. I had no clue where his dorm was or even what his major was. Of course, I was able to assume some things based on what he talked about, but I still couldn't have been sure.
A month or so passed without any sway in his beliefs. I should have expected that, but it still didn't help me feel any better. In that time I had managed to grow quite used to my classes and the people in them. I became friends with my roommate as well as various others.
On one particular, cooler day, all they had been talking about was some party that they were overly excited about. By the time the class had ended and we were back outside, they had convinced me to tag along. I didn't know why, but in that moment I became brave and was soon begging Mitch to go too.
"There's a party tonight at one of the houses off campus. Apparently a lot of people are going."
"Where are you going with this?" He asked, almost immediately catching on.
"I was thinking about going to the party. And maybe you could go with."
"Oh really?"
"Yes."
"And why would I want to go?"
"Cause I'll be there."
"Sneaky, aren't you?"
"Can I convince you to go?"
"I don't know."
"Babe. We're this close."
"Destiny, Scott."
"Fuck destiny."
"You're cute."
"Please go to the party?"
"I'm not the partying type." Of course I knew this. In high school, he always complained about how much his friends begged him to go to any dance or party. He always shot them down.
"Please? Just be the partying type for one night and you won't regret it."
He was silent for a long time. I had almost made it back to my room by the time he answered. "Are you sure I won't regret it?"
"I promise."
Another pause. "Don't expect me to be there the whole time. I'm still not going to tell you what I'm wearing, or what I look like today. And I swear to god if you go out of your way to find me I will end you."
"Thank you, baby."
"Yeah, yeah."

A few hours passed before I heard from Mitch again. I was already at the party and had been for awhile, simply trying to keep up with my friends. Suddenly his voice came out of no where. Even though people were talking loudly and the bass and drums of the music were carrying over into the room we were in, I could still hear him as clear as day.
"Don't drink too much tonight. I don't want to hear your complaining tomorrow."
"Yes sir." I turned back to my friends for a moment before fully realizing. "Wait. Does that mean you're here?"
"Maybe."
"Where are you?"
"I say we just wait until we run into each other."
"Still holding on to destiny?"
"What if I promise that we'll meet by the end of the night? Will you stop moping around?"
"Who said I'm moping?"
I could practically imagine him rolling his eyes, but he didn't answer me. I didn't know what to say either, so we remained silent for awhile. I didn't know what was going through his mind, but mine was sure clouded. I was trying my hardest to wrap my mind around the fact that he was close by, but I was failing miserably. And I tried to stay patient, buy I once again couldn't help myself. I had tried to be patient for years now, but if there was any time to truly be patient, it was tonight.
My friends eventually moved into the next room over where the music was even louder, and there were even more drinks and people. I couldn't help but let my eyes linger on every brown haired boy. I couldn't help but wonder if any one of them was mine. The group I was with didn't stop at the edge of the room and continued going further towards the crowd dancing at the front. I wanted to follow them, but I was just waiting for any sign of Mitch. So I stayed on the outside of the mob, just staring at the ground, listening to the music.
"I have a question for you, Scotty." I felt relieved as I heard his voice break through my thoughts.
"Yeah?"
"How tall are you again?"
"I'm a couple inches above 6 feet."
"Good to know."
"Why do you want to know? So you can find me first?"
"Maybe. Or maybe I already see you." I immediately picked my head up and started scanning the area around myself, looking for any sign of him.
"Stop that, you look like a dork."
"Mitch."
"I've always had a thing for tall, muscular guys, but damn." A pause. "Can I make a request? Never stop wearing tank tops."
"Mitchell." I said, beginning to be a bit annoyed but with his teasing.
"Nuh uh. You don't get to call me by my full name. Oh my god, you look like a sad puppy. You don't get to look that cute. Or sad."
"Are you really that close to me?"
"I guess you'll find out soon."
I rolled my eyes, growing more and more fed up with what he was saying. I was going to need a lot more to drink if this kept up, and I was definitely going to complain to him if the night didn't go how I wanted it to. I slowly made my way towards the edge of the room, trying not to bump into anyone. I was almost in the clear, close to the table I was trying to go to, when I suddenly ran into someone. Even though I was sure I ran into him, I was the one to stumble and stop while he kept going. I immediately turned back around to apologize, but by that time, the boy was already too far away. I simply sighed and was about to continue with the task I was initially set on. However, I heard Mitch's voice again.
"So you know that brunette that you just ran into?" I looked up from the ground and to the direction of the boy. He was swaying his hips slightly with the beat of the music, still making his way out of the crowd.
"I didn't mean to run into him." I said, my eyes now stuck on him.
"I know you didn't."
I was about to ask just what he meant by that, but before I could do anything else, the brunette looked over his shoulder. His eyes immediately found mine, then he winked.
He fucking winked at me.
I turned to face him then, my jaw dropped and eyes wide in realization. He smirked before turning back around. I stood still then, watching him exit the place. At that point I started moving, following the same path that he did. I walked out of the front door too, immediately ignoring the few people outside, my eyes narrowing in on the brunette again.
I always tried to imagine what he would look like. From the very moment I found out who he was, I always tried to create some sort of image of him. But none of those, not even the most perfect ones, were close to how he looked. His hair and eyes were dark, just barely illuminated by the nearby street lights. But there he was the brunette boy with matching eyes, now waiting for me to make my move.
"Come give me a hug, you giant."
