It's My Life #1
A/N~ This chapter is about Max after he had been sent to his room for saying Mordred, then his day after that. And I also posted a picture of what Max is supposed to look like. So here goes nothing! (PS it's still 3rd person) I also used the posture of Max from Devianart and full credit goes to creator!!! Not me!!!!!!
Max went to bed after his mother had almost yelled at him.
Stupid mum, he thought, laying in bed alone without finishing his dinner. I know Mordred killed Arthur, and I know Arthur was Dad's best friend, but still! She shouldn't have blown up about me saying the word Mordred. It's just a name!
He continued having a conversation with himself for about thirty minutes until Millenia causally walked into their shared room. She looked, what's the word? She wasn't angry. It wasn't fear. It looked almost like she was sad, or upset, almost depressed.
"What's wrong?" Maximum asked.
She sat down on her bed unbraiding her long raven hair. "Nothing," she murmured.
"Come on, we both know that's not true. You are always sorta happy, aren't you?"
"I had to your half of the nightly chores," Mia teased.
Awesome! Max thought. I didn't even think about not having to do chores!
"That's not it either," is what he said out loud though.
"Alright," Mia said, barely louder than a whisper. "I kinda overheard Mum and Dad talking and-"
"You were eavesdropping?! That's amazing! I have actually taught you something!" Max interrupted.
"No. I was listening very carefully to other people having a conversation. Anyways, you know the kid that lives on the other side of town thats super brilliant?"
"You mean the boy you have a crush on?"
"I don't have a crush on Ren!!" she told him a little bit louder, but still very quietly on most people's standards.
"Then why are you blushing?" Max said in an aggregating voice. But it was true, she was blushing very obviously.
"No, you don't understand!"Mia said. "His family got interrogated and they were all deemed as practicers of magic and hanged!"
Max shook his head in disbelief. "But...."
"The entire family."
"Even his baby sister, Isla?" Max asked, almost refusing to believe this.
Mia nodded, then started to cry. And Mia, as shy as she was, never cried. "It's all so frightening," she sobbed.
"I know," Max said, rushing to her bedside to comfort her. Even though they were twins, Mia was still technically his little sister. "Believe me, I know."
Max got up early every morning school, waking up before the sun had even started to rise.
He sat up on his bed, ruffling his hair with his fingers, just like he did every time he got up. Max looked around the room and saw his sister curled up in a ball under the covers, fast asleep.
Max got out of bed and snuck past his parents, who were resting as well. He grabbed his boots that he set by the front door and put them on quickly.
After Max had got his shoes on and his hair semi-brushed, he ran out the door, knowing he only had a few precious minutes to practice in secrecy.
There was a small clearing in the woods that could be reached within minutes from his house, and if you could time it just right, it was the perfect place for using magic.
He looked around the woods, running along the hidden path as quickly as he could without making any sound. When Max approached his spot, he immediately sat on the cold forest floor. The guards the patrolled the woods came to this spot just as the sun rises above the skyline, so he knew he had about ten minutes if he didn't want to get caught.
"Leviter," he muttered under his breath. "Leviter."
Max got excited when he saw a small flicker of light hovering in front of his face for a second before it flickered out of existence.
He tried the spell over and over again, never achieving more than mere moments of a glow.
The young magician looked up from his magical trance to see the sun climbing higher and higher above the line where the sky touches the Earth.
"No!" he shouted, getting up hurriedly.
Max ran as fast as he possibly could, no longer worrying about the noise he was creating. But all was in vain.
"Hey, you!" a soldier yelled to him from behind. "Halt!"
Max stopped running and held his hands above his head anxiously. He had been coming to this spot for about three months, alternating with Mia. But never had either of them gotten themselves caught.
"Where did you come from?!" the guard screamed at him.
"A small clearing, a little ways back," Max replied as quiet as his twin.
"Then why were you running?!"
Max thought for a moment for a cover story.
"Well?" The officer was getting impatient.
"I was running because I saw someone performing magic, and I didn't want anyone to think it was me," he told the stern man towering above him.
"Okay, but that doesn't explain why you were out in the woods at daybreak."
"I was, um, scouting for food for the rest of my family," Max said, his voice cracking.
The guard asked him who his family was.
"The Immortals, sir," he replied. "We live just down the road. My father works for the king of Camelot humbly."
"And who is your father?"
"Would you like to know his real name or the one the king gave him?" Max asked with a smile, despite the danger he was in.
The patroler laughed at Max's remark. "His artificial name, please. King Pierre introduced everyone by their false name, so that is most likely all I know him by."
"Colton, the Court Physician."
"Oh, Merlin!" the guard exclaimed. "Yes, I know him. I knew him back when Arthur was King. I'm guessing you're Maximum, aren't you?"
Max nodded. "And what is your name, sir?"
"I am Sir Percival, knight of Camelot. And I believe it is about time for you to go home, isn't it?"
He nodded again.
The two walked back to the household, discussing whatever boys like to talk about. Hunting, girls, you know, stuff like that.
Percival knocked on the door and Mia was the one to answer.
"Mum?" she called into the house. "Max is back. And he brought a knight with him!"
Korra and Merlin rushed towards the door.
"Thanks, Percival," Merlin told the knight.
"No problem," Percival replied.
The family waved as the guard walked away in solitude.
Merlin turned towards his son. "Where were you?" he asked his son harshly.
"In the woods."
Mia tried not to make eye contact with her mum or dad, knowing if she did, she'd give the whole plan of her and Max taking turns practicing magic.
"In the woods doing what, exactly?" Korra interrogated.
He mouthed the word magic.
"I'm sorry, what did you say?" Merlin yelled.
"Magic!" Max wailed. "I'm sorry! I've been going into the woods three or four times a week to practice magic!"
His parents asked for how long.
"About three months," Max said, suddenly very interested in his dirty, worn boots.
Korra looked to Mia. "Did you know anything about this?"
She nodded.
"And you didn't tell us? Max, I expect secrets, but you too?" Merlin asked, sounding very disappointed.
"She didn't tell you guys because she was doing it too!" Max screamed.
This time Merlin looked towards his daughter "Is this true?"
She nodded again.
"Yeah! That's the reason I only go three or four times a week! We take turns going," Max exclaimed.
Merlin looked down and held his fingers to his temples. "I'm going to pretend this didn't happen until tonight after you two have gone to your magic free school, and I go to my magic free job, and your mother goes to work, which in no way is associated with magic!"
After Korra had head out the door for work, and Merlin had left for his job, Mia and Max walked slowly to school. They made small talk as they neared the old school building.
The Academy of Camelot had been standing in the same spot for nearing a hundred and fifty years, but the exterior didn't show its age. It was a two story stone building that looked like it had been built yesterday. The tall stained glass windows were always so clean, you could see your reflection even on the foggiest of nights. The epic elm doors were ten feet tall, and beautifully designed with bronze rivets. The Headmaster of the institute was a stern, no nonsense type of man. Timur Godfrey had been in the education business for nearly forty years, yet never had he seen a child as brilliant as Mia, or as defiant as her twin, Max. They most certainly made an odd pair. He stood at six foot, with very warm fawn coloured eyes, and short cut black hair.
The twins continued walking through the school yard, talking to no one but each other. They were the only twins in the school, possibly the only ones in Camelot. Therefore, they didn't exactly fit in. Mia was always too shy to talk to people, but Max made friends wherever possible. So far, he had a grand total of two. Mia and another boy named Kendall Duke. He wasn't the brightest, but he was funny and entertaining. He had shaggy ginger hair that was impossible to get a comb through, so Kendall simply gave up trying. His long, messy hair often covered his eyes, but if you got to see them, you would be startled by their brilliance. His eyes could somehow by a soft green, but at the same time, a harsh blue. They truly were incredible. Like most boys, he had a crush on Mia, but knew he never had a chance with her. He thought her to be the most beautiful girl in the world. Max often just called him Duke.
As Max and Mia went on with their conversation, Kendall ran up to them.
"Hey Max," he started.
"Hi, Duke," Max replied.
"Hello, Mia," Kendall blushed. "I was wonder-"
He was cut off by the school bell.
They all said goodbye and headed to their classes.
Max came into his first class, History, tardy as usual.
"Mr. Immortal, you have missed the first ten minutes of class, where you?" The teacher asked. Whatever his name was, Max didn't remember.
"I got lost, it's a big school," Max replied, which won him a laugh from the class.
The teacher was not amused. "On the last day of school? I am glad students like you aren't coming back."
"Wait, what?" Max looked stunned.
"Yes! We only teach Primary School, and you will be a first year once the next school year starts. That is, if your parents are able to find a school that accepts idle brained morons like yourself!" This time, the class laughed at the teacher's remark."Now, back to your seat!"
He sat down, but nothing in the entire world could of made him pay attention. And Mia thought History was the most interesting!
The eldest twin truly was an idle brained moron for the rest of the day, except for lunch and free time, of course. For lunch, he sat with Mia, and Kendall only joined them when his friends were absent, so that day the two of them chose a secluded spot in the schoolyard to discuss the events from that morning.
"Dad seemed really mad," Mia said quietly.
"Oh! Thank you, Mia!" Max said sarcastically."I never would've figured that out without your help. Thanks for that super helpful piece of information."
"At least I am being realistic," she continued. "Mum seemed more disappointed than angry, but Dad, he just seemed furious."
Max pointed out that magic was highly unlawful and could get the entire family killed.
"No, I mean other than that. He seemed scared. Maybe it was something he and Mum were talking about last night."
"But I thought that you listened to their conversation last night," Max said simplemindedly.
Mia told him that she didn't hear all of it. They caught her and sent her to bed. "But I did hear something about Scotland."
Max looked puzzled."I'm sorry, what?"
"You know, Scotland." Max wasn't catching on. "If you had paid the slightest bit of attention in geography class, you would know what I'm talking about."
"Yeah, but I didn't, " he replied. "So I don't know what you are talking about."
Mia explained that Scotland was a country directly north of England.
"Why would our parents be talking about that?" Max inquired.
"I don't know," Mia admitted. "I honestly don't know."
The rest of the day was irrelevant to the Immortal twins. The day went on with classes, kids bullying them, loneliness as they watched the other children get together to say their goodbyes during free time, and other stuff like that.
After what they thought to be their last school day ever, the two of them walked back home even more slow than they came. Max and Mia talked about that morning, mouthing the word "magic" every time it came up in the conversation. They also discussed the fact that they would most likely never go to school again.
Max was obviously perfectly happy with this fact, but Mia seemed downright distressed.
"I knew you liked school, but I have never seen you this unhappy," Max told her.
Mia nodded.
"Is this about Ren, 'cause-" Max said quickly.
She cut him off. "I don't want to talk about it, okay?"
Mia ended the conversation and they walked home in silence.
