We had exchanged our hellos and introductions rather quickly. The interview needed to be recorded live and I for one was trying to keep it together. I had hoped it wouldn't be live so if I made a fool of myself, it could be edited. I clasped the cards Lois had shoved into my hands at the last second, my eyes drifting over the questions, many were some she had already asked in other interviews.
"I wanted to ask about how you felt about your monument and the memorial. It's very nice, do you think you're being idolized too strongly?" I asked.
"It's not the most subtle thing, but I appreciate the people of Metropolis and their respect to me is held high. I am still adjusting to how many lives were lost during the battle three years ago. I wish I could have saved more," His answer was so polite that I realized this is how the entire interview would be. Superman was a symbol, and he needed to act accordingly.
"You were named The Savior of Metropolis and even labeled as a God by many newspaper headlines even my own, that seemed to spark outrage by how split everyone was on your title. So many Government officials have said that even if you fight for us now, who's to say you won't turn on us like Zod and his people?"
I knew he was getting a lot of bad press from everyone else and I wanted this interview to be better. I didn't want to ridicule him for the lives he saved over the ones he lost. I wanted him to feel at ease. Hopefully, I could paint him in a brighter picture that could help with all the negatives surrounding him as of late.
"The difference between Zod and me was that I grew up here. I've lived among you all for thirty-six years, and I am in every sense an American. I have a few abilities that place me higher, but I will never exploit those abilities for my gain as Zod had planned to do. I am here to protect,"
"What about your increasingly growing fan club, The Kryptonians? You don't believe their idolization could be too much?"
"I don't pretend to be a God, only have been labeled that. As long as I know who I am and where I stand in this world, their idolization will be only that,"
I set aside the cards Lois had given me. The questions she had scribbled on the cards seemed very one note, and that one note was the anger of the people. I was surprised; there was a rumor that Superman and Lois were a thing a while back after it was pieced together that he would always save her.
"And who are you exactly? I know a lot of your interviews have been very polished, and I want to know who the real Superman is,"
He smiled, a slight blush brightly ghosted his cheeks, "What would you like to know, Annie?"
"What do you do on your free time? You have to wear casual clothes, right, and there are never any reports of Superman standing in line for coffee, you do drink coffee, right?"
"I prefer tea, but yes, I do have civilian clothes, I did grow up in Kansas, Annie," He smirked at me like we shared a secret.
"Sorry, I keep forgetting that. How was life for a young Superman, surely your parents and friends didn't call you that," I was hoping to get something out of him other than his polite replies, maybe I can trick him into telling me who he was? I knew it wouldn't work, but these are questions I want to ask, and it's filling the awkward moments when our eyes meet, and we stare at each other just a hair too long.
He laughed, strong hands rubbing his thighs, must be a nervous habit, "I had a normal childhood, nothing too extreme. Once my powers kicked in when I was young, I had to figure out how to keep myself 'normal.' My parents helped a great deal, and I managed,"
"Are you always so-,"
"Respectful?"
"Painfully so," I tapped the cards against my hand watching his incredible blue eyes drift across my face.
"It comes with the job,"
"Of course," behind him, Perry gestured to his watch signaling that I had two minutes.
I smiled politely and turned my attention back to the man in front of me, "It was such an amazing opportunity to speak to you, Superman. By far calmer than our first meeting,"
A perfect dark eyebrow quirked up, "I'll try to use the front door next time, I'll even bring coffee," He smiles brightly.
"That would be nice,"
Our gaze locked and my heart sped up as he kept his eyes on me. His eyes were beyond any human eye color I'd ever seen, and I was transfixed. I only blinked after Superman's brows furrowed and his head cocked slightly to the side as if he was listening to something. Immediately he stood up. I quickly got to my feet smiling up at him.
"I'm sorry to leave so quickly but..." he gestured awkwardly with a pointed finger in the direction he heard the distress.
"I completely understand. It was great talking to you. Hope to see you around," I spoke as Superman began to walk past everyone, who just watched us intensely.
As he reached the door he turned back to me, "I'll bring the coffee," with one last dazzling smile he was out the door and heading towards the balcony and out of my sight. A few bystanders rushed after him, and I smiled turning my attention back to the select few still in the room.
They all stared at me. Some women had a tight smile, and quirked eyebrows and the men just looked on in amusement. My eyes settled on Lois who looked hurt.
"Is everything, ok? Why does everybody look so -," I began to speak, but Perry cut me off his hand clasping onto my shoulder tightly as he came up beside me.
"Annie! You were amazing! The chemistry between you two was electric!"
"Oh, it was a simple interview, nothing major," I smiled sheepishly trying to play off the heat I felt under Superman's gaze as just the way he looked at everybody.
"Annie, the whole room could feel it and if we could feel it everyone watching it could too," Perry laughed.
Suddenly I felt my heart drop and my eyes shot to Lois. She gave me a tight smile and a nod before leaving the room, and I heard Perry say something along the lines of "be ready for all the attention." I had already walked out of the room after Lois, and she was fast with steady, determined strides to the kitchen where I was surprised to see Clark.
"Oh hey, Clark!" I was hoping to apologize to Lois not have the guy I was going on another date with hear that I was flirting with Superman. Clark had smiled at me and hurried from the room muttering something about Perry needing to see him. I watched him walk away from a smile on my lips as he glanced over his shoulder back at me.
"Hey, Lois? I wanted to apologize, that was inconsiderate of me to flirt with him in front of you," Her blue eyes watched me closely as I spoke, "I didn't do it on purpose, it just happened. I'm kind of dating Cl-,"
"Why are you apologizing to me?"
I blinked, "Well weren't you two a thing for a while?"
"Yes, but I broke up with him over a year ago. It was too much stress to date him and-," Lois stopped talking like she almost spilled a secret before regaining composure, "I'm relieved to have my life back. I'm not labeled as Superman's girlfriend anymore if that's the route you want to go then go for it. He's a great guy, but he does have enemies," She walked out the kitchen turning back, "I haven't seen him that happy in a long time,"
She walked away, and I stared baffled. What the hell just happened?
