Church bells clanged across the village green, but Maisie ignored their invitation.

'Stop that racket!' she croaked sleepily, but they only clamoured louder. Then trees crashed! She leapt to the window. Maisie saw three massive ringers smashing through the garden wall, scattering foxgloves and dog-eyed daisies, rolling thundrously up to her door.

'Ok, ok!' she yelled and jumped out of the window, before the house disappeared under the ancient bells. 'I'm coming!' she screeched, 'Stoooooop!'

Slipperless but pyjamaed she scrambled over garden wreckage, following the alarming bells now rolling sedately into chapel.

'There's no escape,' she thought. 'Do or die.'
