Chapter 2
Jack was completely confused and absolutely horrified. After Romara, he had to go to art class (it was awful, the room smelled like paint, and just the feeling he got from knowing he was in an art room was pitiful), and after that, he had a class called humanities. Later, he learned that 'humanities' was just a fancy name for reading and language arts. Basically, each class was an hour long, but taught by the same teacher, so it was two hours in the same room. Absolute torture.
The whole time, he just stared out the window, ignoring the teacher, Mr. Fingers or whatever his name was. Occasionally, this one kid would give him a glare, but Jack wasn't sure why. Maybe it would be best just to ignore him for now.
After art and humanities, lunch period.
He had no idea where the cafeteria was, but the crowd of kids in the hallway moved like a wave that sort of pushed him along in the right direction. Everyone was in each other's space, bumping into on another, the hall an endless echo of people. Every time someone accidentally jostled him, Jack had to force himself not to smile or cheer; he was real. People could see him! Say his name, talk to him, ask questions, everything.
The cafeteria was a large room that was filled with tables, a long line of kids getting served some kind of sludge, and posters that covered the wall saying things like, Go Burgess Warriors!; Warriors stand together!; and Burgess Public Highschool: Take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and take care of our school. The room was filled with the school's colors, too, purple and blue. It was kind of disgusting.
"Frost, over here!"
Jack turned and saw Hiccup seated at a round table with a group of other students, waving his arm like a tree caught in a blizzard. He made his way over to them.
"Hey." Jack said.
"Alright, guys, this is Jack Frost. And Jack, this is Merida, Anna and Elsa -- they're sisters, practically conjoined at the hip -- Kristoff, Rapunzel, and Eugene. We're all great friends and- "
"You talk too much." Merida said grumpily.
"Don't mind her," said Elsa, her long blonde hair falling in a shimmery waterfall down her back, "she's in a bad mood because of Hans. Here, have a seat."
Jack took the seat next to her and raised an eyebrow. "Hans?"
"Uh-oh," whispered Eugene, "here it comes... "
"That complete fool over there in the varsity jacket. He's convinced he's all that because he's on the football team and he's dating Anna. He literally makes me what to- argh!" The redhead slammed the flat of her hands against the table, causing it to shake. Jack was impressed with her strength.
"He's not so bad." Anna said in a small voice, then added more confidently, "He's really sweet and he runs my lines with me every day after school -- I'm in drama."
"I'm pretty sure he's out to get your sister." Kristoff said. Anna glared at him.
Jack could understand why dating a girl like Anna would make you cool. Her hair was like a coppery brown waterfall and the blonde streak that so many other girls had to dye into theirs came naturally. And with her wide eyes and designer clothes... Well, she looked like Elsa; cool, respectable, hot and smart at the same time. Except Elsa had something Anna didn't, a sense of maturity.
"I'm gonna go get in line." Eugene announced. "Wanna come with, Punz?"
The girl with the bright green eyes and ling blonde hair was staring at Jack. "No, I'm good. Home lunch today."
Eugene, looking defeated, went and stood in line with Merida instead.
Hiccup leaned forward. "You're new, so why don't we tell you about this place?"
"There's nothing special about it," huffed Jack.
"You're pretty much right. Things here are very diverse; everyone stays in their own groups. Band members, swim team, and the football players and cheerleaders, who pretty much make up all the popular kids." Elsa said knoweldgebly, "And then there's us."
"You and Anna could be popular if you wanted." Kristoff argued, "You just choose to sit with us for some reason."
"It's 'cause we're funny and much nicer than the other guys. The cheerleaders are snakes and the football players... Don't even get me started." Rapunzel shook her head.
Jack nodded. "Yeah, that Hans guy you were talking about earlier was giving me weird looks in class earlier. Unless it was someone else, but I'm pretty sure it was him."
Hiccup, Kristoff, Rapunzel, Elsa, and Anna stared at each other.
"I knew it!" Rapunzel exploded.
"Dude, you're in!" Kristoff gave a very confused Jack a high-five.
"Are you guys high?" Jack asked.
Elsa laughed. "It means he feels threatened by you, Jack. He always ignore the new kids unless he feels like they'll take his throne."
"It's because you're cute, and brave. I heard Amber and Tiana talking about it in the girls' bathroom; apparently a hot blonde who was brave enough to take one Romara is a student here now. I should have known it was you!" Rapunzel laughed, clapping her hands.
Jack's brow furrowed. "All I did was put my feet on the desk and that got my entire class extra homework. We have to research this theory by somebody-or-other and write an essay on it. I don't see why that would make people like me."
"You're brave. Different. Something this school has never seen." Merida said, returning back to the table with a tray in her hands. "All the girls are drooling over you. Look, here comes some now."
At that moment, two teenagers girls walked by, one smiling and batting her eyelashes and the other applying lip gloss before putting it back in her tiny, phone sized purse. They both waved at him.
"Wave back." Hiccup hissed.
"But be lowkey." Eugene added.
Jack had no idea what 'lowkey' meant, but he raised his hand and waggled his fingers a little, smiling back at them. The girls gave flirtatious smirks and sashayed away.
"Perfect!" Kristoff cheered.
"Don't talk to those two, Esmeralda and Aurora are total hoes." Rapunzel whispered. Elsa gave her a dissaproving look.
"They're my friends, Punzie, and they're actually nice -- when they want to be, I guess, but still -- I mean, they aren't terrible." She argued.
While the group talked, Jack tried to study them, picking up hints like a scientist would while studying a group of birds. Eugene had a crush on Rapunzel, but she wasn't having it, and Kristoff liked Anna, even though she was dating Hans. Elsa and Anna were the kind of girls who could sit wherever they wanted during lunch and be super nice, yet somehow be cool at the same time. Merida was the kind of girl who didn't take nothing from nobody, and Hiccup was obsessed with drawing dragons, reading books about magical worlds and alternate universes, determined he would one day be the the king of his own.
By the end of the lunch period, he decided, yes, these people would do.
"Alright, see you later, Jack, and welcome to Burgess High." Elsa said, giving him a wave before heading to her calculus class.
"See you tomorrow?" Rapunzel asked hopefully.
"Um, sure?" I don't plan on coming tomorrow, but if the Guardians make me...
With that, Jack headed towards Math. He was in Algebra I, which sounded in itself like some sort of torture instrument. Unfortunately, the classroom was nearby, too, so he arrived there rather quickly.
"Hello, everybody." The teacher smiled. She had honey brown hair and eyes, as well as large round glasses that made her eyes seem enlarged until she appeared to be like a doe. "I'm Miss Sugar. Most of you know me from last year; I'm pretty cool, easy on the homework, but I have expectations for you in return... "
She kept talking, but by this time, Jack just blocked her out.
So bored, so bored, so bored, so bored, so bored.
"We'll be covering several different theorems this year, such as the pythago... "
So bored, so bored, so bored, so bored, so bored.
"I also distribute process tests every other Friday. Now, for attendance- "
So bored, so bored, so bored so bored so bored so bored so bored
Jack quite literally wanted death. This was another joint-class, two different related subjects taught by the same teacher, so he had two more freaking hours and then even P.E. before he got to freaking leave. How was he supposed to survive a whole year of this?
"Jack Frost?"
The boy's head snapped up. "Yeah?"
The class was suddenly filled with snickers and laughter. Miss Sugar smiled.
"I've called your name several times, please pay attention. And when we do roll, all you have to do is say 'here.'"
"What about present?"
"That works."
"What about attending?"
"Yes."
"What about hither?"
"Well- "
"What about- "
Miss Sugar cleared her throat, a sign that clearly stated 'that's quite enough of that,' and continued taking roll. After that, class started, except it wasn't really class. She seemed to be the kind of teacher who believed that taking the first day easy was okay, unlike Ms. Romara, so she called on each student and had them say three things about them: How many schools they've been to, favorite subject, and favorite thing to do outside of school.
"Moana?" Miss Sugar asked, "How about you?"
"I've gone to three schools besides this one, two of which were in Hawaii, and the third was the middle school here. My favorite subject is math, and I like to swim." The girl said, fiddling with her long, dark hair.
"Alright, you next, Ariel."
And on it went, until it came to be Jack's turn. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
"I've never gone to school. This is my first time. Um- "
"Wait, what?"
"How is that possible?"
"Where are you from, anyways?"
Jack crossed his arms and glared at the floor. Stupid teachers. This was high school, not fourth grade! What was next, sitting on the rainbow carpet and sharing feelings?
"Do tell, Jack." Miss Sugar said, "We don't get a lot of new students."
"Well," he said, trying not to show his irritation, "I spent a lot of time in France and in London. I was, um, homeschooled." The part about living in France and London was true, but being homeschooled wasn't. "I can speak French; it was my first language."
"Do it!" Someone cried. A girl, probably, judging by the squeal.
"Um, je ne suis pas vraiment sûr ce qui à dire, particulièrement vu que je déteste tout au sujet dececi, mais hopefuly il suis assez." Jack gave the teacher a pleading look. Get me out of here.
Miss Sugar gave him a smile and quickly directed the attention towards someone else, but it was too late. Now everyone knew him as the foreign kid who could speak another language. All of the girls were giving him sickening, simpering looks as well.
The rest of the class period went by excruciatingly slowly, and was spent 'getting to know' all of the other students. When the bell finally rang and dismissed them to their next class, which was P.E. for Jack, he was relieved. He hated everything about that freaking class.
Physical education was new. Everyone was given a locker, a white shirt, and a pair of light blue basketball shorts with a purple stripe down the side of each leg, the school colors. Also, changing in a room full of other kids was new to him and kind of uncomfortable, but everyone seemed to keep mostly to themselves, so it wasn't that bad.
"Hey, man." Kristoff said, hitting his arm lightly, "I didn't know we had a class together!"
"I'm glad we do. These people look like they could kill me." Jack said, sneaking a glance at Hans, who stood in the corner. He was just as muscular as Jack was, but Jack was thinner, and without his staff, being evenly matched with a human felt threatening.
Mr. Bryant was a very strong and broad looking man with light blue basketball shorts and a black T-shirt. A whistle hung around his neck.
"Here's what's gonna happen. Just to see where all of you are, we're going to have an entire day of running laps. Drop out and walk the perimeter when you get tired. Got it? Not that I would repeat it if you didn't. Now start running!" Mr. Bryant blew the whistle.
Jack followed Kristoff's lead and started to jog. The whole class ran circles around the gym over and over and over for what was about ten to fifteen minutes before students started dropping out, but Jack wasn't worried. He was light, had good breath control, knew how to pace himself, and was overall a pretty good runner. Three hundred years of practice helped as well. By the time half an hour rolled around, he hadn't even broken a sweat.
More and more kids stopped running. Each time they did, Mr. Bryant took a note on his notepad. Jack was determined to be the last person listed there.
"How... Are... You... Still breathing?" Kristoff gasped.
Jack shrugged and shook his head, pumping his arms at his sides at a steady pace. He better than to talk while running, it wasted your breath.
Hans started to give Jack dirty looks again. Uh-oh.
"I can't... Keep going... " Kristoff caved, and eventually fell back.
Now it was just Hans, Jack, and seven other football players. By this time, the boy had only just started to sweat, and picked up his pace slightly to match the others. Two others dropped out. Then four, and then one.
Now it was just Jack and Hans.
Hans sped up until he was running next to Jack. "Give it up, Frost."
"Give what up?" Jack didn't stop himself from replying this time, there was only ten more minutes left in the school day.
"Don't bite off more than you can chew. Drop out, now."
"No, thanks."
Jack inhaled deeply and started to run faster, starting to sprint. Hans did the same, until they were neck and neck. No way am I letting this guy beat me, he thought, pushed himself even harder.
Hans smirked suddenly and nodded to one of his friends on the sidelines. Jack didn't pay much attention to it. That is, until he saw said friend suddenly stick out his foot right as the two were passing by. With no time to change directions, Jack felt his foot catch around the guy's ankle, and then he tumbled to the ground.
Ouch! His skin burned as he slammed into the ground. He was pretty sure he had friction burns all over his hands and knees due to the fall, and he slid to a stop, lying there for a split second, stunned. Hans laughed as he passed by.
"What happened, Frost?" Mr. Bryant demanded as Hans finished the last lap.
Jack, embarrassed and angry, shook his head. "Tripped, sir."
"Over what?"
He just shrugged.
Jack looked to his side and saw Hans high-fiving the guy who had done the tripping. It made him want to kick a chair, punch someone in the face, break some glass, and freeze the entire school building. Everyone had seen what had really happened, everyone except the teacher.
"Don't let it happen again."
"Yes, sir."
The students were dismissed to the locker rooms to change and head home. Jack left as quickly as he could, putting back on the hoodie and breathing in deeply. It smelled like trees, damp, sweet soil, and snow. It was comforting. And as he snuck into the alley way, pressing his stinging hands together to stop the stinging, he thought to himself sarcastically:
I can't wait to tell the Guardians about my first day of school! Not.
