Chapter Six: The Party

Saturday. Every student loves Saturday. It's the only day of the week that's truly free. You can sleep in all morning and stay up all night. No school that day or the next morning. It's what we all looked forward to. The day that got us through the week.

Now, most of the students partied on Saturday's. They'd hang out with friends, get drunk and make out. Or, at least that's what every 80's teen comedy would have me believe.

I, on the other hand, spent my Saturday's alone. It was my time to unwind. To avoid people. Even Felicity knew not to bother me on a Saturday.

I guess I forgot to tell Kennedy that...

My phone rang out from my desk.

I set my pencil down, seeing Kennedy's name flashing on the screen.

Why was she calling me? We weren't supposed to be studying today...

My thoughts raced as the phone continued to ring.

Then, it hit me. "You aren't answering the phone. Why aren't you answering the phone?"

I picked it up, swiping on the screen. "Hello?"

"Hey, Millie, you free today?" Came Kennedy's response.

I looked around my quiet, empty room. For her, you're free. "Yeah, what's up?"

"One of the girls on the cheer squad is having a back to school party and I'm inviting you." She said.

My eyes widened a little. "Um, what?"

"A party. You know, music, dancing, drinks." She replied.

"Uh, Kennedy, I-"

"I know you're nervous around people, but I'll be by your side the whole time. And you can invite Felicity along." She cut off.

My body froze. My heart rate skyrocketing. "Mhm..."

"Millie, it's in a couple hours and I'd really love it if you came." She said, a sincereness to her voice. And, something a little extra. Something hidden.

I closed my eyes, that sick feeling building in the back of my throat. "... Ok."

"Yes! You're gonna have so much fun, I promise." She squealed.

"Ok, I'll talk to you later." I quickly said before hanging up.

I could feel the sweat building on my forehead as I stood up, pacing around the room. "What the hell did you just do? You can't go to a party. What if people look at you? Worse yet, what if they talk to you?"

I threw my arms up, knowing damn well I couldn't say no to her.

My fate was sealed whether I liked it or not...

I pulled my car to a stop in front of Felicity's house. Luckily she agreed to tag along.

She approached the car as I got out. "Please drive." I said.

She stopped in her tracks, looking at me. "Are you gonna be ok?"

I got in the passengers seat, shaking my head. "I might puke. But that's ok, everyone pukes at party's."

She sat behind the wheel, turning to me. "Yeah, when they drink to much. Not when they walk through the door."

"You're not helping." I replied.

She laughed as she took off towards the address Kennedy gave us. "Lighten up, it's just a party. You walk down the halls with these people every day."

I closed my eyes, shaking my head. "But, I'm not expected to converse with them. It would be weird if I didn't talk to people at a party."

"Weirder than throwing up?" She questioned.

"I hate you."

She laughed more. "Alright, I'm done teasing... Besides, you should be looking at this as a good thing. Kennedy St. James personally invited you to a high school party. That's like the highest honor you could receive."

She had a point. Most students didn't even get to breathe the same air as Kennedy St. James.

I felt a twinge of determination wash over me. "You're right... I get to breathe her air."

Felicity gave me a look. "What?"

I waved my hand. "Nothing... Let's just get this over with, before I change my mind."

She just shrugged, continuing towards the party...

We pulled to a stop outside the house. The driveway was full of cars, loud music blaring from inside.

Felicity shut the car off, opening her door. "Ready?"

I rubbed my neck. "Nope."

"Good, let's go." She said, getting out.

I slowly stepped out of the car, following Felicity to the front door.

We stepped up onto the porch before she knocked.

The door opened, an unfamiliar brunette standing on the other side. "Who're you?" She asked.

Oh God, please don't throw up on her.

"Felicity Madison, we go to school together." Felicity said.

"Kennedy invited us." I added quickly.

The girl looked between the two of us before calling out Kennedy's name. Then, she walked off, leaving us standing awkwardly on the front porch.

I opened my mouth to talk, when Kennedy suddenly appeared. "Hey, you two. C'mon in." She said.

We followed her in, a sea of students scattered throughout the house.

A few of them looked our way, whispering amongst themselves.

I shrunk down, hiding my face behind my hair. "They're staring at us..."

Kennedy wrapped an arm around my shoulder. "So let 'em. C'mon, let's get you two a drink."

We let her lead us towards the kitchen, bottles of all shapes and sizes lining the counter.

"So, what're you drinking?" Kennedy asked.

"Beer." Felicity said.

Kennedy nodded, handing her one. "A woman after my own heart."

Then, she turned her attention to me, a little smile pulling at her lips. "How about you?"

I froze up.

I've never drank before. You're panicking. Just answer her.

"B-beer." I stuttered.

She cracked one open, handing it to me.

I looked down at the bottle, the smell infiltrating my nose. Nope. No chance in hell that's going in your mouth.

Kennedy raised her bottle, then. "Cheers."

Felicity clinked it with hers before Kennedy held it out towards me.

I nervously clinked the bottle, watching them take a sip afterwards.

With a quick breath, I forced a tiny sip of my own, doing everything in my power to keep it down.

Kennedy patted my back. "First time?"

I shook my head. "No, I love beer."

Why are you lying?

She smiled, whispering in my ear. "They'll get easier."

I felt my body shiver as her breath bounced off my ear. "Right..."
