Chapter Seven: The Kiss?

Maybe Kennedy was right. It took me a whole hour to finish the first beer. But, by the third or fourth one, they were going down without any hassle.

I was having trouble standing, though. And my head felt dizzy. But, like, in a good way?

I let out a hiccup, starting in on my fifth beer. "These are really good."

Why couldn't I talk right? I was slurring every word. Oh, God, you're drunk.

I laughed a little, causing Kennedy to turn to me. "What's so funny?" She asked.

I pointed at myself, whispering. "I think I'm drunk."

Felicity patted my shoulder. "You're a lightweight."

I turned to her as Kennedy laughed. "I'm gonna take that as a compliment."

Felicity laughed now, shaking her head.

Just then, a guy walked up to us, addressing Felicity. "Hey, uh, I was wondering if you'd like to dance? With me?"

Felicity looked to me. "Um..."

"She'd love to." Kennedy said, nudging her towards the guy.

She turned back to me, a nervous blush on her cheeks.

I smiled. "You got this."

As the guy led her towards the living room, Kennedy whispered in my ear. "Come with me, I wanna show you something."

I nodded, following behind her.

She led us up a flight of stairs, through a bedroom and onto a balcony overlooking the backyard.

It was mostly quiet out here and no one else was around.

"That music was starting to give me a headache." She said, leaning on the railing.

I hesitantly leaned next to her. "Yeah... Hey, uh, thanks for inviting me..."

She turned to me, a little smile on her lips. "Are you having fun?"

I nodded, raising my beer. "These helped."

She giggled. "That's a rousing endorsement if I've ever hear one."

I laughed a little in return. "Can I tell you a secret?"

She nodded, what looked like another blush growing on her cheeks.

"I'm actually having fun because of you... If anyone else but you asked me to come, I would've said no." I slurred.

The blush on her cheeks grew as she threw her bottle back. "I'm glad you came... I wouldn't be having any fun without you here either..."

My cheeks warmed as I looked away, trying to hide the growing smile. "Thank you..."

We stood in silence for a little while until she spoke again. "Can I tell you a secret?"

I sucked in a tight breath before facing her, nodding.

"I hate Mercedes... I hate the way she treats you..." She said, clearly slurring her words now as well.

I studied her for a second before replying. "Why..?"

She looked out over the backyard, taking another sip of her beer. "You're kind, Millie. You're a kind person... A nice person... And nobody sees that... I don't know why they can't see that... But I see it. I saw it the first time I bumped into you..."

My heartbeat sped up as she turned her head, looking into my eyes. "Most of us pretend to be something we're not just to fit in... But, you don't have to pretend. You are who you are and you don't give a shit what anybody thinks..."

I lowered my head, averting her gaze. "I wish that were true..."

She took my hand, then. "It is, Millie... You don't have to be afraid of who you are... At least not around me..."

My eyes snapped back to hers. What did she mean by that? What was she trying to say?

"Kennedy..."

She rubbed the back of my hand with her thumb. "It's ok, Millie... I saw the way you looked at me in the locker room that day..."

The nerves in my stomach grew. What the hell was happening?

"I'm sorry-" I started, but she cut me off, holding her finger in front of my lips.

"Don't be..."

Then, before I could even think, she pressed her lips to mine.

Our surroundings faded out. My whole world melting around me.

Her lips were soft, sweet, with a light hint of alcohol. Her hands found their place on my waist as she deepened the kiss.

My whole body lit up, my heart exploding in my chest.

I hesitantly cupped her cheeks, feeling her tongue against my bottom lip.

It was a feeling I've never experienced before. A moment I never thought would happen.

Sadly, it ended just as quickly as it began.

Kennedy pulled away from me, averting my gaze. "I shouldn't have done that..."

I took a hesitant step towards her. "But, I liked it... I like you..."

A hint of a smile pulled at her lips, but just for a second. "I'm sorry... I should go."

Before I could speak, she turned on her heal, rushing off.

"You don't have to go..." I said to myself, staring at the open door, wishing she would come back.

Then, Felicity walked through, bringing me back to reality. "Uh, why did Kennedy rush out?"

I felt a single tear well in my eye. "We should go..."

Felicity pulled to a stop in front of my house. "Is it cool if I crash here for the night? I don't want my parents to know I was drinking."

I just nodded before stepping out of the car, dragging my feet all the way to my front door.

Why'd she leave..? She could've stayed... She could've talked to me... Hell, she started it...

I pushed through the door, collapsing on the couch.

The room was spinning, a slight pain radiating through my head.

Felicity walked in, closing the door behind her. "Alright, I know something happened, you have to tell me." She said, sitting down next to me.

I stared at the floor, picking at the arm of the couch. "Kennedy kissed me..."

Felicity suddenly stood. "What!? Are you serious!?"

I just nodded.

She clapped her hands together. "This is great! What does this mean? Are you guys gonna get together?"

I shook my head. "She just apologized before running off..."

Felicity sat down again, patting my shoulder. "So that's why she rushed out..."

I nodded. "I wish she would've just talked to me... I mean, I don't even know why she did it..."

Felicity lowered her head now. "Did she say anything at all?"

I ran her through Kennedy's cryptic words leading up to the kiss.

Felicity rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "Ok, so maybe she suspects you like girls to. Maybe she does have a crush on you."

"Doubtful. She was probably just latching on to whatever she could. It's hard being gay in a small town like this. You don't know who you can trust, who else shares the same feelings you do..." I replied sadly.

Kennedy kissing me most likely meant nothing. She was drunk. She suspected that I liked girls and this was her chance to test out her own feelings. Nothing more...
