The Last Chapter

When Mabel opened the door, she was met with something she had never expected.

Something that was humanely impossible.

After all, this is not in the Earth Dimension, is it?

She expected herself to be met with more rooms and white light. However, there was no pathway, just a void of fire and nothingness. The flames burned a sharp red, not like the warm crackling flames of a fireplace. As red as a poppy. The way the flames danced around, it was creepily mesmerizing.

Red and black. Such a sharp contrast.

Mabel was shocked to realize she still had her balance. The hem of her white dress floated while she was carefully threading her way. She felt like she was drifting. Just then, she spotted a faint glimpse of the same glaring countdown timer. She ran towards it.

The sound of heavy footsteps hitting shallow water reverberated across the void. Strange, where did the water come from?  Mabel looked down to realize her white dress was now stained with the splashes of jet-black ink.

What is going on?

06:56:34

She turned behind to see the door had vanished. Wherever Bill was before, that room is now gone.

Mabel collapsed into the pool of black ink. She did not see the menacing new stains that were slowly creeping up onto her for her eyes were welled up in tears.

Yet, she didn't miss it. A flash of yellow appeared before her eyes, followed by a flash of blue. Mabel widened her eyes and instantly got up- but she couldn't.

Like falling into a deep abyss, she felt her legs give way and felt herself forcefully pulled into the depths of the mass of liquid, before being completely submerged...

---

When she awoke, she coughed out copious amounts of the black ink. There was a weird aftertaste in her mouth.

She was now donned in a delicate black gown, with glittering jewels decorating the gown. Along with the way she was sprawled on the floor, she looked like a runaway bride.

When her eyes regained focus, she examined the new setting. It was bright and even, colorful.

She was in a barn, but though it showed signs of wear and tear, it looked modest. Animals were standing lazily in the corner and it was peaceful. Mabel heard voices from the barn and gingerly made her way to the source.

The place Bill was before he sacrificed himself for his friend and became the demon Mabel had initially known him to be.

"Bill? Bill!" Mabel gasped as she got her first glimpse of the trademark yellow.

Finally, she will no longer alone!

"Please stay right there, dearest one, you do not know your place," a voice spoke up, almost sounding like Bill, but more sinister and menacing.

Mabel looked around frantically, trying to meet Bill's gaze. Yet, he kept his gaze firmly rooted to the ground.

"Bill, what's going on?!"

---

"Mabel," Bill's voice was soft, and there was a tinge of regret.

"I'm sorry you never knew."

.

Mabel's vision grew hazy for a moment before going back into focus. This was when she could see, as clear as day, Bill tied up and bound firmly against the wall. His piercing eyes slowly met her scared eyes, letting out a big sigh.

"It was against the rules, to come back. To you."

His voice cracked and grew even softer.

"I never told you this because I never wanted you to worry, though I initially wanted to. But that day, when I saw you once more in the Mystery Shack, and I saw how delighted and glad you were, I didn't want to ruin it."

"What I wanted to say was, was that- Mabel, I did horrible things. To protect you, and to come back to you. It was tough, Mabel, it was really tough. I shall not go into the details, but everyone has to pay a price. In exchange for what they wish for. It is this irrefutable law of the world that we must all abide by. And now I have to pay my share."

"I was never meant to be with you, Mabel. I am but in essence, an immortal evil demon and you are an innocent mortal being. And it is with this we have defied the ways of the universe we are bound in."

"This is it Mabel, this is goodbye. I can get you out of this dimension, but this is it."

"This is it, I am sorry."

"I really looked forward to spending the rest of my time with you."

---

His voice was reduced to a hoarse whisper and he appeared to have cowered even more into the darkness.

No, no...

Mabel looked at him desperately to meet his gaze, but he did not look up.

Just then, Bill's alter ego, Will, made his grand appearance with the firm clicks of his footwear.

"Mabel, how long has it been? What a happy reunion, the three of us!" Mabel could even hear the smirk in his voice.

"Alright, so what now from here?" she retorted.

"Hey! I am glad to see you're finally cooperating, good on you! Well ideally, Bill's coming with me and hey! If you want, you could join us here too! We shall all be happy forever, won't we!!"

His voice sounded almost maniacal now.

"Will, didn't we already agree on something?" Bill replied with a low growl.

Suddenly, the scene changed and the lightning that appeared simultaneously almost blinded Mabel's vision.

"You do not have the right to talk to me like that, Bill!"

Will's voice was as piercing as thunder. It was a fearsome growl, the growl of an Alpha Wolf.

Numerous emotions were running through her Mabel's head. It was overwhelming, but she had seen this coming. Bill was right. It couldn't have been that easy, it just does not work that way.

The tears finally leaked from her eyes.

Is this really it?

"Mabel."

"Mabel, look at me!"

Bill's eyes were in the same shade, as Mabel has always remembered.

It was radiant, like the light that the Sun benevolently bestows upon the tender blooms of spring. Like gold, the precious commodity, the gift beneath the most dull-looking rocks. Like Bill, the one who turned against his fate of evil towards goodness, the man who has always been there for her, the one who would do anything for her no matter the price he has to pay.

Their eyes met, emerald green to golden yellow.

Mabel felt herself falling once more.

02:10:23

---

They were now in the place they first met. Mabel and Dipper's room in the Mystery Shack. Bill was free from the shackles. Mabel ran towards his open arms, enveloping him in a wide hug. It was as though her life depended on it. She tried to remember this sensation, to feel his heartbeat and to feel how it was to have his hands on her back.

"Is this how it has to end?" the tears were now freely coursing down her cheeks.

Bill cupped his hands tenderly around her cheeks. He smiled and his gaze softened.

"I wanted to give you the best life I could. And I am sorry to have failed. I really love you Mabel, I really do."

"Move on, and live life to the fullest for me, please. For me."

---

01:24:79

They were back in the barn.

"I was just being nice to give y'all this little ceremony to say goodbye and I am getting impatient! Bill's coming with me as agreed, oh boy do I have so many things I would wish to settle with him!" Will thundered as he waved his arms and began to make wild hand signs.

The skies above were getting wilder. Lightning bolts leaked from the swirling black clouds and an ominous air lingered.

Mabel looked desperately around her, trying to find something, just something. But to no avail.

She felt herself being inevitably pulled to the ground once more, while the other two stayed rooted where they were. She was being pulled back to the Earth realm.

A tear rolled down Bill's eye and the look of pain on his face was too much for Mabel to bear.

Suddenly, it came to her.

This is it, Bill.

"Bill, thank you for all you have done. I will always be eternally grateful."

Could this work?

Mabel fought hard to resist the sinking ground around her. Her eyes were fierce and focused, set on one goal.

She took a few steps forward, towards the two.

"Mabel no, please! Leave this dimension, you do not belong here!"

"Mabel!"

His pleas were deaf on her ears. She marched forward, each step with considerably increasing difficulty. Her fierce gaze was fixated on only one person.

Will returned the gaze, looking entertained, even fighting back the urge to laugh as Mabel stood less than a few feet away.

From his point of view, how Mabel was resisting so hard against him with him full-knowing it was all futile, was a hilarious sight.

However, that laugh never surfaced, for her next action caught him entirely off guard.

Please, I don't want to lose you.

With a firm hand, she grabbed Will's open hands crackling with electricity and sent it straight into her vulnerable heart.

00:00:00

---

"Goodness, love and sacrifice."

"These are just a few of the many pure qualities of your beautiful mother, the woman who saved me."

"It's true, we live by rules that govern the way the universe is run. But sometimes, just sometimes, our universe turns a blind eye for the purest of hearts. Without her sacrifice, I would not have had been given a chance, with everything I have done. I could never have had you, Cadence."

A pair of big golden eyes stared into Bill's kind gentle gaze. Her small mouth opened slightly and she looked away, a little confused by her father's strong words.

"Bill, Cadence is only 3, how can she understand whatever you just said?" Mabel entered the room, laughing merrily, one hand on her hips, head shaking.

"Mummy! Tell me the car accident story again! Again, again, again!" Cadence beamed innocently and hugged Mabel tight on her knees.

"Alright alright," Mabel smiled warmly.

Bill stretched a hand beckoning Mabel over. Nuzzling his head on her shoulders, he planted a soft kiss on her cheek.

"I love you so much, Shooting Star."

"Shooting Star? Why is mummy a star?" a curious voice piqued.

Both Mabel and Bill  exchanged a look and smiled, bring Cadence in for a warm, tight hug.
