Time flew past with a blur. Things returned back to normalcy. The couple relished every moment they shared, whilst battling the hardships of education.
"Hey, what is the value of x in this equation? I can't get it out..."
Bill bit the end of his pencil in thought, but stopped when he saw Mabel glaring at her. He shot her a cheeky grin. Mabel never liked him doing that. It was unhygienic.
"Anyway," Mabel continued, "basically you have to.....yadayadayada"
Bill nodded, quickly scribbling down notes.
"Yes I am done! Can we go home now?" I'm hungry!"
He announced after a while, as he stretched out his arms out wide, yawning.
"Our math end-of-year examinations are tomorrow, why aren't you freaking out yet?" She chided.
"Guess I am a mis functioned person who can never get stressed."
There was no reply from the other side as both of them packed up their bags. It was soon the dinner peak hour, more customers were already streaming into the café.
Bill interlaced his fingers with hers and they stepped out of the shop.
The clouds were grey, it was going to pour heavily, Mabel observed. They had better get home quick. Then she could spend the night comfortably revising on the couch. A cold blast of wind gushed through, almost blowing up her skirt. Not before Bill managed to block it with his great stature.
Drops of rain landed on their foreheads. Bill used his hands to shield his head while Mabel started digging her bag for her umbrella fervently.
It was raining sooner than expected.
Pitter patter. Pitter patter. Pitter patter.
"Help me hold this," she muttered, as she handed Bill a bunch of stuff from her bag.
But her carelessness got the better of her.
Out of everything else, she just had to drop her small keychain. It might seem insignificant, but it was his present for her on their third date, when they won it from an arcade machine.
"Woah, how do you mange to do it so easily? Aw this plush toy keychain is so cute!"
*insert tsum tsum keychain or smth like that*
"Really? You can have it."
"Really?" She asked back.
"Really." He laughed back.
At the sight of the fallen keychain, their instinct took over, and they bent down to pick it up.
However, having a slightly spherical shape, the keychain rolled quickly onto the road. Bill dashed after it, without much thought.
He doesn't think much when he saw the lights behind blaring at him.
If only given a few more seconds, he would have made it out alive by sprinting to the other end of the road.
But the resounding crash produced was unmistakeable.
Mabel screamed a bloodcurdling scream as she stood helplessly by the side, watching Bill being flung violently off the ground, before crashing onto the hard black tar road a few metres thereafter.
The two of them locked eyes before he fell unconscious.
It happened within mere seconds.
How could it have happen within such a span of only a few seconds?
No.
No.
No it can't be.
She dared not look at the road, but stared at the driver instead.
The driver stood rooted in place, eyes wide open with shock. His car managed to escape immaculately clean.
However, with a screech, the car dashed away. Mabel let out an angry shout, but the car trailed away, leaving Bill lying bloody on the floor. A hit-and-run accident.
Mabel felt herself shaking. She closed her eyes and clenched her fists tightly.
Maybe this is all just a dream. Otherwise, how could it have been so sudden?
But the silent drops of rain now beating steadily on her back reminded her of the harsh reality.
Her eyes jerked open and trailed to the lifeless body on the road...
The sun was blocked by the vast clouds, the sky was a shade of dark blue.
Her eyes widened in shock. He will not die.
He cannot die!
She managed to scrambled to his lifeless body, and the hot tears that welled instantaneously blocked her vision entirely.
A pool of crimson red flooded where his head rested, now mixed with the droplets of rain, diluting it to an almost translucent red liquid, which oddly reminded one of red wine.
His eyes were closed, and despite the fact that his body was contorted in awkward angles, he looked almost peaceful.
"Call the ambulance, call the ambulance, call the ambulance.." Mabel muttered, whipping out her phone.
She was in a state of shock, and her body was obviously unable to register the new fact that...
She didn't know how she managed to dial and speak with trembling hands and a choked up voice, but she did it.
Mabel ran her hands frantically over his face, body and arms. Her hair was now wet from the rain, but she didn't care.
Her drenched clothes were now useless and did nothing to insulate her from the rain. The clothes stuck onto her skin uncomfortably, but it was the last thing on her mind.
She was cold, but she couldn't feel anything. Her hands was now numb.
She didn't know whether the liquid streaming down her cheeks was rainwater or her tears.
The blood washed away quickly, and Mabel placed her head against his chest, grappling hard on his cold wet hands.
She couldn't feel any heartbeat.
Why is the ambulance taking so long?
A few cars cruised by, but she couldn't be bothered to clear off the road. Their bright spotlights blinded her.
She was going to stand by him no matter what.
He must not die.
"Bill. If you can hear me, please respond. Please tell me you love me, like you always do. Please talk to me, I want to hear your voice..."
Her lips were pale blue and teeth chattering, and her words were incomprehensible.
"Miss, please get up. We need to bring the casualty to safety." A firm voice said.
She wanted to look up to acknowledge the voice, but her neck was stiff from the cold. She wanted to open her mouth and speak, but her teeth felt like ice.
She tried to move, but an overwhelming force rose over her, pressing her down. She felt greatly restrained. Something washed over her. She felt drowsy and weak, her arms unable to comprehend her thoughts. An intense headache erupted over her. The pain was too excruciating.
And then, she felt herself fall into a never-ending black abyss.
