About the Book of the Month - The Beard

In my story The Beard, my main character struggles with the fact that the love of her life has come out as gay to her. The Beard first started as just a girl who gets dumped because her boyfriend has come to terms with his sexual identity, but as I continued to write, I wanted to bring to light just how much people struggle with coming out, especially in a town where literally everyone knows each other. I also wanted to show the struggles of someone who has never thought about the LGBTQ+ community and how she navigates trying to understand someone who may be different from her.

1. What made you start writing on Wattpad?

I discovered Wattpad in 2013. Now I can't remember how, but I started reading Fanfiction about One Direction. I was so into it that I wanted to write my own. After completing my first and second fan fiction, I found that I really enjoyed writing so I created this account (sky_is_limit) in 2014! 

2. Can you provide more insight into the character of Emerson "Emie" Badgley? What makes her a relatable protagonist in this story?

Emie is meant to be a girl who's about to graduate and start her life. Simple enough. But when her path gets obstructed, she spirals. I think that's relatable because teenagers' minds aren't fully developed. Even when turning 18, they don't know everything and are still trying to navigate their emotions. I think Emie is relatable because she makes mistakes just like anyone else. She cries, becomes depressed, and tries to figure things out. Just like anyone else. She's a sweet girl who didn't think she's be broken up with because her boyfriend kissed a boy in Hawaii. It makes her really insecure and she goes a little crazy. 

3. Emerson and Sebastian have a platonic, conservative relationship. Could you elaborate more on this and how it impacts the story?

So, at the start of the story, Emie describes her relationship with Sebastian as platonic because while she's ready to take the next step, he's been holding off on it. She's ready to become more intimate because this is the man she wants to marry. When she's shot down by Sebastian it does make her feel like maybe something is wrong with her. In this way, she does seem a bit selfish as she doesn't really stop to see just what might be wrong and just why Sebastian keeps shooting her down past a kiss. It's really the first signs in the story that her happy relationship is not so happy and they're not such a picture perfect couple.

4. What do you hope readers will take away from the story? Are there any particular messages or lessons you want to convey through Emerson and Sebastian's journey?

I want people to know that it's okay to struggle with your emotions and to take time figuring things out. Sebastian went through a really hard time when he developed feelings for a guy. He was confused and rightfully felt alone because even his girlfriend didn't quite understand him. I want other people to understand that they're not alone. Emie's character is meant to represent that while she's hurt, she's still willing to learn and be there for Sebastian. At first, it is to hold onto him longer which just hurts them both, but in the end she realizes just how much Sebastian has struggled. I think I want people on both sides to know it's okay. It okay to not understand something while actively not discriminating and maybe wanting to learn, and it's okay to be different and let go of those who don't want to try to understand. 

5. What do you think makes a good and intriguing young adult romance story? 

I think a good young adult romance story consists of realistic ideals. I think a ya story works so much better when it shows the actual struggle of teens and what they may be going through. A lot of times, adults write the perspective of teens but in an adult mindset. They forget the struggle they may have gone through as a teenager. And the ending doesn't always have to be happy. That high school couple doesn't always have to be endgame!!6. What is your advice for new writers who want to try writing young adults with romance concepts in their stories?- Young adults are awkward. I think it's more normal to show how clumsy teenagers are rather than taking them and throwing them in adult situations. Don't be afraid to feed in real moments you've faced as well! And don't be afraid to be more vulnerable through your writing. I'm 23 now, but I can still remember every embarrassing moment I've had and that's okay. As young adults, they don't have the answers and that's fine. Just be careful when feeding in adult concepts too because you aren't writing adults!! And of course, always have fun with your project. It becomes your baby after all!
