Quick backstory: Matthew was born not in the wasteland, bet inside of a military Infirmary. Matthew's Parents lived inside of The Cheyenne Mountain Complex, the long forgotten headquarters of NORAD. During The Great War, the Chinese had struck Cheyenne Mountain with a Low-Yield Neutron bomb. This meant that the bunker complex was completely unscathed, but the surrounding areas had become highly radioactive. Not that it mattered to the military personal inside, they had enough supplies to last almost 50 years. 

Matthew lived a particularly sheltered life, as he was born right around the time Caesar's Legion began to take shape. However, the Legion never came to Conquer the residents of Cheyenne Mountain, which by now had been named "The Complex". While Matthew was growing up, his Father would teach him how to survive in the wasteland, and a family friend even taught Matthew how to be a Soldier, since the resident's of The Complex continued to follow the Practices of their Military ancestors. 

When Matthew had learned of the Defeat of the Legion at Hoover Dam in 2277, he took off into legion territory with a Sniper rifle, and began hunting high profile Legionnaires.
