~Chapter 9~
You appeared to walk through the rest of the day in a daze after the intimate exchange between you and the Android. Within the next few passing hours, Hank occasionally looked between you and Connor with a weird expression on his face.
"Is there something on your mind, Lieutenant?" Connor asked many times as he did so. He always shook his head, and returned to watching the television. You were currently rubbing behind Sumo's fluffy ears as the three of you were seated in the living room. Hank suddenly yelled something that had to do with what he was watching. He began pacing the corner of the living room, hands clutching his arms. He looked to be disappointed.
"It would be best to sleep, Lieutenant. The current game is almost over." Connor suggested, looking up at him. He seemed hesitant to speak.
"One, stop calling me that outside of work. Two, can you do one of those prediction thingies?" Hank asked, motioning his hands towards the television. Connor glanced at the TV for a moment.
"Okay, Hank. The Detroit Gears have a forty-eight percent chance of winning the game currently, with ten minutes remaining." Connor announced. Hank sighed in defeat, arms falling to his sides.
"I'm goin' to bed." He patted the side of his leg. "C'mon, Sumo." He began to walk to his bedroom. You waited for Sumo to spring to his owner's side. He didn't budge. Hank gave a confused look. Sumo whined.
"Fine. Betray me, then." Hank spoke once more before entering his bedroom. "No funny business out here, alright?" He eyed you and Connor. Connor tilted his head to the side, a quizzical look on his face. Hank rolled his eyes before finally shutting the door to sleep. You reached up for the blanket resting on the back of the couch to lay over you and Sumo. Connor stood up from his spot on the armchair nearby and returned to his spot behind the television, and in front of the window. He turned off the last lamp and the TV in the process. Once you got comfortable, you noticed he was still staring straight ahead.
"...Are you..." You began. "are you just gonna stand there?" His eyes met yours, even in the darkness.
"I was planning to. Would you feel more comfortable if I went somewhere else?" Connor asked politely. Your mouth opened to speak, but you began to think again. I mean...you didn't feel uncomfortable when he stood there. It was...nice. Like he was protecting you. You always had a comfortable feeling whenever he was around you.
"No, no. It's fine." You finally responded. He nodded once, and went back to staring at the wall directly in front of him. You silently watched him for a few minutes. It intrigued you as to how Androids worked. Do they sleep? His LED changed from the normal blue to yellow a few times. It was fascinating. His arms were stiff at his sides, and his eyes were shut tight. He seemed relaxed. Yet, you didn't feel ready to sleep yet. A smile slowly reached your lips.
"Goodnight, Connor." You whispered. You finally shut your eyes and rested your head against Sumo's side. It was silent in the house, except for the dog's loud snoring. It was adorable. You felt yourself drift off into dreamland. You couldn't really remember if he had said it, or if you were just imagining it, but you heard Connor's voice again.
"Goodnight, Y/N. Sweet dreams."
Sunlight shone through the windows, hitting your eyes. You slowly woke yourself up alongside Sumo. He making a squeaking noise as he yawned and stretched. Then you immediately proceeded to be kicked in the face by the large dog, as he jumped off of the couch. You sat up silently, not knowing who was awake yet. As you began to follow Sumo to wherever he was walking to, you noticed movement in the corner of your eye.
"Good morning, Y/N." Connor came to life at your movements. "Did you rest easily?" You were almost startled at his voice.
"Shh! Hank might still be sleeping." You quieted him down. He nodded, walking towards the kitchen. You assumed he would be making something breakfast related, even without being asked to. After watching a few minutes of the morning news, you heard a soft whimper behind you. Your head turned to see Sumo sticking his nose underneath the crack of his owner's bedroom door. You let out a happy sigh as you walked over to him. You slowly opened the door, allowing entrance for him to annoy Hank. Sumo quickly jumped up onto the bed without a second thought. You briskly walked away when you heard muffled cries for help and profanities. When you re-entered the kitchen, Connor was giving off a worried look.
"Is everything alright? I heard Hank, and you said he was still asleep." He asked.
"Oh, he's fine." You ginned playfully. You sat down on a chair to observe him. Just as he turned around to hand you a bowl of cereal, Hank stumbled out into the dining room behind you.
"Who let the beast jump onto my bed?" Sumo appeared behind him, tail wagging furiously. You looked away, hiding your face. Hank sighed loudly, while messing up your hair. Then you proceeded to justify yourself as he sat down. Connor continued to talk to the two of you while you ate. Hank seemed somewhat annoyed by it, but you enjoyed the noise, mainly to avoid a silent breakfast.
"We should plan on returning to the house we found Y/N in today." Connor added. "There, we could try to recollect some of you memories."
"Okay. Sounds good Connor." You half-heartedly smiled at him. You couldn't really explain why you were uncomfortable at the thought of returning to the house. The three of you finished up breakfast, while getting ready to leave. Fifteen minutes passed as you drove to the house's address. Memories started to flood back to you. You sat in the same seat you were sitting in now, blood trailing from your head, and a strange feeling of fear and confusion visibly shown in your eyes. The car jerked to a stop.
"We're here." Hank spoke flatly. The three of you piled out into the driveway, you being more hesitant than the others. You slowly followed behind Connor, towards the front door. You both stopped at the front door. Connor turned to face you.
"Try placing your hand on the censor." He pointed towards a familiar box sticking out of the side of the home. By his suggestion, you did just that. The screen turned a bright green, as you pulled your hand away.
"Alarm deactivated. Welcome home, Y/N." You searched around for the source of the voice, but you couldn't find anything.
"Then this surely must be your home." Connor commented. When he noticed you had been standing in the same spot for over a minute, he became the machine equivalent of worried.
"Y/N? Are you alright?" Connor asked you, leaning in to see your face.
"Y-Yeah. Just nervous...or excited. I can't tell." Something longed for you to step inside the house. So, you followed your gut feeling while the front door automatically opened. As your shoe reached the wooden floor, you immediately lurched back. Cold hands held your shoulders to prevent your fall.
"It is alright to be scared upon re-entering a place of past trauma." Connor spoke softly. "Take your time. I'll be right behind you." With a few motivating words and lots of time, you made your way into the living room. It felt like your eyes couldn't handle how much they were taking in. Like you had mentioned to Connor during the questioning, you very much liked the design and furniture of the home. But even with the comfortable essence of the area, you still felt a lingering presence of fear. You couldn't tell where it was coming from. While Hank and Connor spoke (or verbally fought) behind you, your feet seemed to be bringing you closer to the kitchen. A high archway brought you to an open floor plan of a kitchen. Something clicked in your brain.
"I want to be free, Y/N."
Your fingers curiously traced the edges of the countertop.
"If I ran, you'd catch me."
Your breath hitched in your throat, and you suddenly stopped everything you were doing. You didn't know why, but something in you screamed to run.
"...I'm sorry Y/N. I really am."
You stopped the plea for help that threatened to come out of your mouth. Your hands began to shake. It suddenly became harder and harder to keep a steady breathing rhythm. You pushed yourself away from the counter, and into the wall behind you. Your knuckles became white due to gripping the archway so tightly. As you gasped for air, you felt a few tears rolls down your face. You saw Connor in the corner of your eyesight when he found you. He seemed relived to see you, but that quickly turned to worry.
"Y/N? Y/N, what's wrong?" He physically acted distressed.
"I...I don't-" You gasped for air while your other free hand trembled. Connor examined you for a second.
"You're having an anxiety attack. Listen to me closely." He found your hand that was gripping to the wall. His large hand wrapped around yours, holding it softly.
"Let's breathe together, alright?" You nodded shakily.
"Ready? Breathe in." He instructed. You attempted at taking in a shaky breath, then released it quickly after.
"We'll try that again. Now...breathe in." You felt Connor wrap an arm around your shoulders as he pulled you away from the kitchen. You opened your mouth again to breathe deeply, and held it.
"Now breathe out." Connor smiled encouragingly at you. Now that you were away from all of the anxiety-provoking thoughts, you could focus on your synchronized breathing. He sat you down on a nearby couch, and he kneeled on the ground in front of you. About five minutes passed of you still clutching onto Connor's jacket, and him responding with optimistic words. He smiled the whole way through. Soon enough you were able to stand on your own, and only tremble a small amount.
"Let's leave." Connor spoke, and pulled you along towards the front door. You didn't quite remember what happened next, aside from Hank taking you into his arms immediately and asking questions you didn't answer. Him and the Android spoke with each other, while you continued to ignore what they said. You only felt comfort in Hank's arms.
"Got it. Make sure she stays relaxed, I'll be back in a few minutes." Connor replied, stepping back into the house.
"Let's just stay here a while, kid." You heard Hank's voice above you.
Well that turned out longer than expected. I hope you enjoyed!
Until next time.
