~Chapter 16~

The night passed by quickly, with the anticipation that you'd find a familiar Android waiting at the front door. The moment you woke up you beat Hank to the shower, ate a small breakfast, and waited patiently. That is, if 'patiently' meant tapping your feet against Sumo's stomach all the while trying to calm your racing heart.
"You're eager, huh." Your head hardly tilted to the left. Hank started seeing an invisible message between you and the RK800 that you didn't notice. The eagerness of knowing what he was thinking was tearing at your mind. Yet you remained quiet, silently rubbing Sumo's ears.
You were never one to watch much TV. So right now, instead of freaking everyone else out in the house by pacing at the door, the Local News was playing. The volume was dimmed down so only your ears could hear it but the words puddled into mush every thirty seconds or so. You knew in the back of your mind that they were still discussing the Android raid and investigation at Stratford tower last night and... you didn't want to think about last night.
Your suspicions of hearing something at the door were confirmed to be true when the doorbell rang loudly. Sumo's ears perked up. Hank silently nodded to you as your feet raced to meet the visitor. Exhaling your contained oxygen, you flung open the door. Upon opening the front door, you were met with a tall brown haired and brown eyed Android.
"My name is Connor, I'm the Android sent by CyberLife." Your eyes re-explored the perfect body you had been lacking of. You noticed the serial number sewn into his black and grey jacket. 313-248-317-52. Something didn't seem right. Connor's voice alerted Hank, who you heard behind you.
"My predecessor was unfortunately destroyed, but CyberLife transferred its memory and sent me to replace it. This incident should not affect the investigation." Your heart pounded in your ears while you studied his expressions fluidly shift from unexpressive to concerned, back to a hidden smile. Then his words hit you. Hank's drunken slur of an explanation was right. The man spoke for you, mouth agape and clearly anguished.
"What the hell'd they do to you?"
"CyberLife transferred my predecessor's memory and sent me to replace it. I apologize in advance if this disturbs you." Connor's voice lacked the previous emotion he once had shown.
"If it disturbs us? I-" Hank snapped back at the Android. The room was silent enough so you could barely hear the RK800's Android-counterpart of a human heart beating. Beating at the same rhythm as yours. You stepped away from the stranger. The Android remained standing in the doorway, confused as to why Hank was suddenly storming away. His pair of bronze eyes found you once more.
"You're not Lieutenant Anderson. Who are you? And why are you in his home?" This was a lie. A practical joke. Your head snapped back towards Hank, expecting a shit-eating grin on his face. The look of someone who had just pranked someone. You only saw his tired hands furiously running through his silver hair.
"I-...What do you mean? It's me, Y/N?" Connor's eyes only sharpened and he tilted his head to one side. A feeling you couldn't describe erupted in your heart and ran through your veins. Regret, exhaust, disbelief, misery, despondency... Nothing could describe this. You swallowed the indescribable feeling forcing itself up your throat.
"Let's...lets go for a walk. We need to catch up." A few days ago, you would have never done this. Connor was your anchor, your safe place. Whatever he did, you followed him. Now you're proposing ideas instead of watching everyone else do them.
You glanced to Hank for approval.
"I have an off day today. Go ahead." The sentence came out in an exasperated sigh. You nodded the Android forward, allowing you to shut the front door behind you. The moment you stepped out onto the walkway, a soft breeze hit you. Your lungs felt like they could finally breathe again.
"Where are we going to walk?"
"...Places." You pushed an empty beer box out of the way with your shoe.
"It isn't recommended to aimlessly walk in the streets." Connor caught up to your aggravated speed-walk.
"I know, just-" An irritated huff interrupted your train of thought. "What happened to you?"
"I do not remember." Truthfully, this astonished you. Which led to even more anger. You suddenly understood why Hank was so upset back at the house.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Every time a Connor model is replaced, some unimportant memories are taken away from the processor to avoid overflow and instabilities. My death may have been one of those unimportant memories." That was it. This was your breaking point. Did he not understand how this made you feel? You speed-walked at an even faster pace, nearly a jog. As Connor appeared at your side again, you realized that, no. No, he probably didn't understand how you felt. You stopped in your tracks, the Android nearly bumping into you.
"Last night, you told me that you'd be back. I can't even put into words how I felt when it was only Hank that came back home, saying that you were dead." The words spilled out of your mouth. Speaking your mind had suddenly become a lot easier.
"You can't understand how I felt, how...how Hank felt! Last night, he almost killed himself." Your voice broke at the sudden pain bubbling up in your throat. "Thank god I was there, right? Would've been better if you were there!" Even the breeze couldn't calm your heart beat and stop your hiccuping. The songbirds in the trees above sang in an attempt to calm your river of tears.
"But no...you died, and you can't even remember it." Your voice dropped to a whisper, clutching yourself at your sides. When you didn't get a response, you looked back up towards Connor. He had stopped talking when you burst out into hysterics of emotion. The expression on his face resembled one of shock. He was overwhelmed over how much he didn't know. And those eyes...you never thought brown would be such a beautiful color. A sunset of bronze cascading over your features, fitting perfectly. You loved them. Just looking at the Andro- no, the man that had saved you, brought you back down to reality. If he hadn't have saved you, where would you be now?
"I..." You used a free hand to wipe some tears. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry- You don't know what I'm saying." Connor hesitantly took a step closer to you. This hasn't been the first time he's hugged you, but now it feels even better than it did before. His strong arms fell around you like a cape, protecting your innocence from the rest of the cruel, cruel world. Your tears dried in the crook of his shoulder and neck.
"I do." He paused. "I remember now."
A smile formed on your face.

Wow. It's been about 9 weeks. And, in those 9 weeks I've missed a lot.
-I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving with family!
-Merry Christmas, I'm sure you had a great time away from school and with family.
-And Happy New Year! Maybe this year won't be as bad.
I'm very very sorry that I've missed so many weeks of updating this story. When I started to re-visit this chapter, all the enjoyments of writing suddenly came back to me.
Thank you for the wait, and see you next time Pixel Crew!
