Stay In Place
The wind howled outside as the rain poured down. Mary tapped her finger on the glazed window and sighed. She was planning to catch a movie with her friend Nadia but right before she was about to leave it started to pour. There is no sign that the rain would let up. Mary got up from the window sill and sat on the island in the middle of the kitchen, she got all her sketchbook and started to Doodle various animals. Drawing was an escape for her and therapeutic. A hand snatched the sketchbook from under her, it was her twin brother Tom.
"What are you drawing?" He looked at the drawings and scoffed.
"Are you always drawing these weird-ass creatures?"
"None of your business genius."She
snatched sketchbook from him and closed it.
"So Mom is planning to take us to that old diner on Piner's."
"Which one?"
"You know, the one with that old dude that always stares at you."
"Oh yeah, why?"
"Let me guess we're going to play board games for 2 hours and then watch one of Mom's romance movies. After that I'm guessing we'll have family karaoke?"
"Ding, ding, ding. It's a habit of routine, mom thinks we're drifting apart too bad dad agrees with her. I think we're in prison."
"Believe me prison is way worse."
"Really?"
"yeah, and besides I kind of agree with Mom. We used to talk all the time tell each other everything. Now we just deflect each other."
"Oh goody, siding with the enemy."
"I'm serious Tom."
"Fine okay."
"Mary check the window again and the pouring rain turned into a drizzle. She ran to the front door and stepped outside, the water pumped up her glasses. As she was standing there she saw her mom's car pull into the driveway. Mary ran up to the car to greet her mom.
"Hey Mary, can you help me with the groceries?"
"Um, maybe Tom can help you?"
Mary's mom just shove two bags into her arms and grab the rest. They dropped the bags on the island and started to put them away. Mary's mom leaned against the island and stared at the twins.
"So since the diner is closing down. This is our last time going there."
"What!? That has been there for years!"
"It's getting bought out by Lady. It's going to be a antique doll store"
"Ugh, it's always the rich people taking stuff from us."
Mary glance at her mother." So when is that coming?"
"I don't think he is, he got held up at work."
"Damn."
they all got ready to go to the diner but when they got there the diner was closed.
"damn it, they already closed it. It's all supposed to be closed, supposed to be open!"
"Mom it's alright, we can just have dinner at home."
"Okay, really sorry for letting you guys down"
They went back home at ate some leftover food. The next day Mary shot out of bed, she was skeptical about this antique doll store. The store sign was pastel pink and it said Esther's antique dolls. she looked at the dolls on the little shelf in front of the window and she swore it look like one of her childhood friends but most dolls are made like that. Mary only ever looked at the dolls shown in the window, she promised herself to never go in it. I gave her a weird vibe. SinceMary had nothing else to do, she went over to her friend Nadia's house. When she got there her mom said she already left and went to the antique doll store, the store that replaced the diner. Mary hurried back to it and went, the air was a bit musty and the store had an ominous glow. Mary saw her friend at the far right corner checking out a doll with a red dress.
"Hey Nadia, what are you doing here?"
"Oh, I heard this just opened up so I came to check it out. I do have a thing for old timey dolls."
"Cool but this place gives me a weird vibe"
"Why, I think it's cool the feeling of suspense."
"Okay if it makes you happy."
"I was thinking of getting a custom job I don't know if they do that here."
the lady behind the counter looked up from her book.
"Of course you do that, just follow me to the back."
"Um."not even looked at Mary and she gave her the nod of approval. That's sent naughtiest getting off to join the lady in the back.
She whispers under her breath"Whatever makes you happy."Mary waited for a couple of hours and got tired of waiting and just left. Days go by and no sign of Nadia, Mary went out to see if she can find out in town, I see passing by the dollar store something hotter on. A doll with blonde hair in pigtails with a plaid skirt on, the same outfit Nadia wore the day she disappeared. She shook off the thought and kept looking for her, but never finds her.
Every person that went into that store never came out but three days later a doll looking exactly like them is put in the window. More and more people went missing in her town without a trace but nobody could do anything about it because they didn't know how it was happening.
One day she walked into the store and the lady at the counter wasn't there, Mary tried the back door but it was locked. She used a bobby pin to open it and it worked. The entrance was a long dark hallway illuminated by single light bulb. There was a purple curtain separating the rest of the area off and Mary pulled in back, what she saw horrified her. the lady that owned the store was holding a boy down while she injected something into him.
Mary saw a bright flash and they were gone but the boy was on the floor paralyzed, Mary ran up to him to help him but was greeted with the lady snatching her up. She blacked out and when she woke up she couldn't move, Mary stood motionless in a frilly dress. Unable to move, as her family walk past the store. She wanted to scream to tell him that she was there but she couldn't. Mary was trapped, forever.
