CHAPTER TWELVE
#notedited
She opened her eyes slowly at the sound of the shutting door. She sat up on her king sized bed, yawned and stretched mindful of her scarf that was somewhere on the bed and not on her head. Oh Ammie! She would have skinned her alive if she were to come in now. Not only because her hair wasn't covered. It's 8:37 am and she's still in bed.
"I still haven't had enough" she muttered hugging her teddy bear tighter. Who else gives a huge teddy bear as a wedding gift if not Jafar Ibrahim Kalil? And who else accepts the gift and regards it as the best ever and even carry it around in her matrimonial home if not Azizah Abubakar Sadiq?
Today marks her second week in Tahir's house. If this is how marriage is, then no one will get married.
Since the day he visited her in her parent's house which was the day they got married, she hasn't set her eyes on him again.
* * * * * * *
Just like every other bride, she expected her fist night in her husband's house to be a lovely and memorable one.
Couples do observe two Raka'ahs together where they thank Allah and seek for his guidance and protection. And lord! Those chilled yoghurt, drinks and the juicy chicken that just the sight of them would drain the saliva in your mouth were something she has always imagined and adored. But unfortunately for her, her first night was nothing compared to this.
After hours of waiting for her groom, she gave up and prayed. Pouring out her heart go the almighty. After then, she had a very hot bath and after her night routine, she was on the king sized bed.
There was no Ammie and Abbie to gist with. Ammie wasn't picking her calls and same was Mama. There was no Jay to tease because his phone was switched off.
"Being married doesn't mean I'm disowned. Does it?" she texted both Ammie and Mama.
Her eyes were heavy but the sharp pain coming from her stomach and the sounds it's making wouldn't be let her shut them. She was starving but she knows nowhere in this house.
She wore a big hijab and after muttering silent prayers, she made her way to the door. She has to find something to eat. After turning the knob, a note surprisingly fell and she need not to be told. It's Mr Husband.
Avoid me and fear the day we will meet physically.
Fear suddenly engulfed her into its dangerously safe arms. Ya Salam! Who did she get married to?
A tyrant?
She was weeping really hard when she got to her bed. The pain in her stomach increased gradually but she promised her self not to go out. What if she meets him? He's going to ruin her first night completely.
She remembered Jay mentioning some lollipops he kept for her in a hand bag as a tear streamed down her cheeks. Oh Jay. Do I have a reason to hate you.
After minutes of searching, she finally found what she was looking for in a tiger skin cloth box which was totally different from the dozen of boxes the groom's family gave to her with her Kayan Lefe . What she saw was totally unexpected. All kinds of chocolates, cookies, biscuits, sweets and lot more.
She ate to her fill before she realized there was no water. No! She has to quench her thirst. Had she known, she wouldn't have eaten anything since there was nothing to wash it down. Why didn't Jay add some drinks or probably ice cream and yoghurt.
Minutes passed and she continued to toss and turn on her bed. She had no choice but to drink from the bathroom.
* * * * * * *
She reluctantly got down from the bed and her feet landed on a soft furry carpet. She picked the note that lay on the floor with a shaky hand. She has tried her possible best to avoid him. Does he want to make another rule.
Leaving for Saudi
tomorrow.
She was speechless and at the same time, she had no idea what it meant. Is he trying to tell her he'll be leaving ? Definitely yes. Maybe he's going back to meet his wife. Does she live there?
She tore the paper into pieces letting out a frustrated sigh. Oh Allah! So she'll be left all alone in this house for how long? Two years? Three? She huffed.
With this thought in her mind, she had a long bath in the relaxing Jacuzzi taking time to pamper her body not with all the concoctions her mothers got for her but the expensive products placed inside the bathroom drawers.
She promised her self not to touch those so she could return it to her mother when he divorce her or she can possibly give it out. She has no reason to use them because it's married woman only and spiritually, she isn't married.
She froze the moment she got out if the bathroom. It was him! Not him but his voice. She forgot to breath as she stood still listening attentively. Ya Salam! It's so deep! This is the first time she's getting to hear her husband's voice after two weeks of marriage.
She let out a hiss absentmindedly when she no longer heard his voice. She wore a long hijab and rushed out of the room to the kitchen. Man needs food. She quickly prepared breakfast for her self and grabbed what she will have for lunch before rushing back to her room.
This has been happening for two weeks now. He bangs the door sending a message to her. The message is "I'm out. Do whatever you want to do before I come back." He didn't write that down but she was sure that's what he has in mind.

"You guys are leaving tomorrow right? " Alhaji Barkindo asked his son over the phone.
"Yes daddy. Toh Allah yerdi. (if Allah wills/ In Sha Allah) he said bitterly
"Tou Dahiru Am. May Allah spare our lives" He said trying to ignore the way his son sounded.
Tahir groaned after his father ended the call. Honey moon with that girl? The girl that he can't even remember her name. Mtcheew! Had it been his father hasn't paid, he would have just dumped her in London and then go for the honey moon with maybe Habib. It would turn to a friend moon.
"You are mad" he yelled at a driver who was trying to over take him.
"Your Mama! " the driver shot back. Tahir flinched. He jammed his right heel down hard on the accelerator. "I'm sure going to deal with this man" he muttered. A black car with tinted glasses over took him and became a barrier between the driver and him. He cursed under his breath wondering if this was a plan.
He was about to over take the black car when the driver revealed his face. The face looked familiar but he can't remember who exactly it was.
"Take care of my sister" the driver said loudly enough for him to hear before speeding off.
"Sister?" Tahir asked himself. It is definitely the human in his house whom people regard to as his wife.
He groaned. Wishing he replied the guy. He should have asked him to take his sister. He doesn't want her and he won't take care of her.
He hissed at the sound of his ringing phone as he had no intention of picking it.
"I thought you wouldn't pick my call" Habib said bitterly. He expected his friend to give him attitudes all because he persuaded him to go with his wife.
" I actually had no intention of picking. I don't know why I changed my mind. " Tahir shot back.
"Where are you? " Habib asked.
"I'm somewhere in Abuja. Any problem?"
"I would break your nose if you don't stop giving attitudes. I'm already in your house and you know I don't have all day."
Tahir glanced at his wristwatch. "I'll be there in few minutes" he said and ended the call.
He huffed. If he has the opportunity to shoot someone, then it would definitely be Habib. The guy has a way of forcing him to do what he has no intention of doing.
He forced him to jump a fence back then in secondary school. He forced to undergo a therapy. He forced him to do so many things that some, he can't remember and worst of all, he is about forcing him to meet Ahsiya.
"What a name! " he thought bringing the car to a halt.
"You know I hate you right?" He said barging into the living room.
"Wa alailumus Salam." Habib said not even sparing him a glance.
"So what is it Habib. It's so obvious you want to send to an early grave."
"I don't have time for your talks Tahir. Go and meet your Amarya (bride) and apologize.
"Hell no! This isn't going to happen. I'm sorry Habib. I can't! "
"Are you still afraid of women?" Habib asked.
"No I'm not. Why don't you want to understand this. I hate them. I don't want to see any woman not even that one in the room. What's even her name? Oh God! Yes! Ahsiya "
Azizah covered her mouth with both hands. He called her Ahsiya? Does that mean he doesn't even know her name?
Tahir paused trying to catch his breath before he continued.
"Understand me Habib. I don't trust myself around any of them. I won't drool or become restless like the way you guys do. I might loose my temper and wriggle their neck."
Azizah skipped a breath. "Wriggle their neck" she repeated continuously touching her neck.
"Calm down Tahir. Now I'm wondering why you are shouting. She could hear you and.... "
"Did I tell you I give a damn? It's better she knows the kind of person she chose to marry so she'll decide if she will go back to her parent's house or she'll spend the rest of her life in the hospital as a result of a broken spinal cord."
Azizah couldn't contain it any longer. She moved away from the door and sat at the edge of her bed. The tears weren't coming but her heart was drumming inside her chest.
"Shikenan. And that will be the end of me. " she muttered. She didn't like it as she could still hear their voices especially that of Tahir.
"Thank God he's leaving tomorrow. I'll at least be a free bird for a while before he comes back and forces me into my cage." she said wiping the tear that began to stream down her cheeks.
For how long will he be gone? A year? Two? Five?
