Chapter 27
The next day, we all got back to work.
We have yet to decide a way to go around the problem that we have in the name of James. But we have decided that it is for the best that we try to find as much as we can about him.
Chris, along with Willow and Blake is hurdled in one corner of his Tech Room as they hack into his accounts and records, anything that they can get into to get every move of his life.
Whereas Jayden, Articus help me scan through the prints of what we have found about him, marking all his illegal transactions or actions.
And, be it luckily, or unluckily, he has a lot of dirt on himself.
We have a huge stack of his criminal and inhuman activities, even though we were not even half way through with his records by the time the new maid announces that the lunch is ready.
All of us use that opportunity to get out of our seats, stretching and groaning as our muscles move after such a long time.
Jayden leans down to give me a peck when everyone starts to bind up, winking at me as I widen my eyes to get him to behave.
Willow rushes out the first, Blake following after with Articus as they talk about something. Chris tries to go after them, but I sense the perfect time to get him and Jayden to talk about the past so I call out to the two.
"Hey, I have to go to my room quickly. Call and check up on Abby, via one of the boys so if it's okay, go ahead please."
Chris gives me a nod before looking at the blue eyed man next to me, who is currently glaring at me.
I stand on my toes, wrapping my arms around his neck and kiss him, making him grip me on my waist. Tugging on his hair lightly before he can deepen the kiss, I whisper, "Give him a chance to explain. Don't make the same mistake I made two years ago."
I peck him again, not giving him a chance to respond before I pull away and turn, leaving the room but not before giving Chris a hug.
I rush to my room, going straight to my ensuite to wash my hands and face. I take my phone out and call Ryker, putting the device on speaker before placing it on the counter, just a safe distance from the sink.
It rings for some time before Ryker picks up, "Hey there."
This makes me raise my eyebrow as I ask him, washing my hands, "Who are you and what have you done to him?"
A husky chuckle sounds from the other side, making me smile as he speaks, "Ever planning to let this go?"
"Nope," I pop the 'p' as I start to wash my face, scrubbing as I listen to him.
"Well, if it makes you feel better, this cheerful behaviour is because of Abby. She talked to Keith and Mason a while back, Kevin made it to her list last night and today she bothered to introduce to us five to her cousin when they came to college. She even asked about yo-"
I cut him off, done splashing water on my face to wash off the products, "Cousin? And college?"
"Yes. She brought Camille to college with her. Something about using her parents' and Kane's name to get her a bit of late admission."
I hum, asking him to continue what he was saying.
"Yes... She asked about you. Said she would like to talk to you, ask your side about it."
Surprised, I ask him, "What do your spidey senses tell you?"
Ryker's spidey senses are an inside joke, because much like the tingling sensations of the insect bitten super hero, Ryker's observational skills are amazing and effective. He catches the smallest of the faults in a person and use his intellect to get connections.
"Well," I hear him heave a long sigh before he speaks again, "I think Camille has let her in about some of the things Kane did to her. Or maybe all of the things. There was a certain level of hostility in her whenever she took his name, and she flinched at calling him Uncle. Camille looked a bit too relaxed around her this time round."
I nod slowly, before I realize that he can't see me so I speak, "Okay. So you think that has helped her to understand my action better?"
"Yes, I do think that has helped."
I huff, running my hand through my hair, "Well... Then I will go have lunch and you do the same."
"Yeah, talk to you later then. Bye."
I cut the call and throw the phone on my bed, going down stairs and to join everyone else.
When I enter the dining area, I see the two leaders sitting on one side, with a seat in between left for me. Articus sat opposite to Christopher, Willow opposite to mine and Blake sitting across Jayden.
Though he was looking anywhere but at him.
I take my seat, smiling at the two members of Ryland gang. Looking at my left to Christopher still engaged in his conversation, I fill my plate with food and start eating.
I feel my thigh being squeezed, making me send Jayden a glare which just made him smirk a little as he continues to eat. I huff under my breath and continue eating, ignoring his smugness.
I turn over another page, my eyes scanning through loads of information that we got, dated a few years back. It is another one of the case file under his name that just 'disappeared' and the case never even made it to any investigators desk.
"I have to give it to the guy," Christopher speaks up from the other side of the room, making my look at him just like everyone else. "The guy is good. So many 'lost' files? And from what I can see of all the cases, he has been bloody successful in black world."
"I agree," Jayden says from next to me. He tosses another file, the shift causing our thighs to brush against each other, "He has managed to complete each case. The world, be it black that we work in, or blue that normal ones work in... he has managed to do every case."
"What do you mean Mr. Carter?" Willow questions, her voice a bit tentative, not sure if she should ask.
"Clear girl."
I elbow Jayden's side at his rude command, giving her a sympathic smile as she gulps. She asks again, "I mean... I saw some of the files. He was supposed to kill Harry in Boston 2017 case, but all he did was extraction."
Christopher nods at her before explaining to her.
"Yes he did. You see, success in the black world is not about how many murder you do. If that was the case, the Ryland gang would have been the last one on the list. It is about what you do should benefit you and your gang."
Jayden takes it up from there, "James is never focused on just death. He does what will earn him name in his gang."
My heart stills as a thought strikes me.
"Fuck!" I stand up, running my hand through my hair as I start pacing in the office, the questioning stares of everyone feeling like needles on my skin. "Wait here."
With that I take off, running to my room. I burst through the door, rushing forward towards the bed to pick my phone and call Ryker immediately. I listen to his ringing, pacing the length of my room as my heart beats frantically, hoping to God I am wrong.
"As-"
"Ryker. Listen," I interrupt Ryker, my voice urgent. "I need you to go to Abby right now. Get her to talk about what she did at college today, each and every detail. The turns and hallways she took, the people she met. The fucking words she said."
"Okay. I will try to ge-"
"I don't want you to try Ry. Do something, anything but get me everything by the end of the bloody day!"
"Done. You can tell me what this is about when I call you tonight."
I hang up as tears of utter helplessness and fear burn my eyes. I swallow, stuffing my phone in my pocket as I leave my room, knowing I have to tell the others what I got to know.
I find Jayden standing out of the office, leaning against the wall across it with his arms crosses. Just the sight of me helps, calming me slightly.
He waits till I am close enough before standing straight and taking hold of one of my hands, which I now notice are trembling. He lifts it higher, till it reaches my line of sight, raising a brow in question.
I plead for him to give me a few more minutes.
Nodding he bends to place a kiss on my knuckles before pulling me forward in his embrace.
I rest my head on his chest, wrapping my arms around him and close my eyes. I feel him kiss my fore head before resting his chin on my head.
A few minutes later, I sigh heavily and pull back. He keeps his hand on my waist, asking me if I am okay for which I nod, unsure if my answer is right or not.
Taking his hand in mine as a support, I turn and walk through the door, facing the questions that are written on their faces.
I start speaking, not wanting anyone to question me and waste time, despite there being nothing that could be done till it is not confirmed.
"I had a chat with Ryker today, right before our lunch today, a couple of hours ago. He told me Abby had gone to college today- with Camille in tow. She said about using Kane's image to help Camille get a degree."
I didn't need to elaborate as I see realization dawn in Christopher's, Articus's and Jayden's mind.
Chris speaks, mostly to get the other two in the room to understand about the situation rather than wanting a confirmation.
"If Abby and Camille had by chance, met professors for which subject she should take, or for anything really... There is a high chance they had either met or crossed James. If they had mentioned Kane's name, they must have told his relation to the two girls."
"Till now, he had no idea where the money in Kane's name had gone. Which was why he had been after you. But now..."
Jayden speaks as he squeezes my hand in support, "But now he would know that Kane's money is bound to be with one of the two girls. He will go after them."
Silence ensues, everyone working their minds, trying to find a loop hole.
"So," Willow asks, "We can hope that she has not crossed path with him right? How will we confirm it?"
"Ryker... I called him and asked him to get the information. But it won't be easily handed because she has no idea how things have been... Ry, he will call by tonight with everything."
