Chapter 19

By the next day, I had decided to talk things out with him. The night and the kiss that happened. Only to find him gone with a note saying he will be back a bit later than yesterday.

I scoff at the exasperating man.

But then I remember how the day before had gone. After our late lunch, we had retired to our rooms but few hours later we found ourselves in the living room, bored. So we decided to hit the gym.

With nothing to do today, I spend all day watching series. The boys came by after their classes were over, and we talked again.

They were shocked to hear some of the stuff we, Jay, me and Sarah did back then.

All in all, by the time 7 o'clock rolls, I am thoroughly bored.

I took the off because I had to visit Chris, but my living partner has no idea about me and Chris so I need a plan to do so. A plan that is believable now that we have started, sort of, talking back again.

Man, Chris is gonna have a field day when he gets to know that I am ready to hear what Jay has to say.

Just when I thought things couldn't be worst, it did.

Mother nature decided to visit me, and I had only one tampon with me.

Doing my business, I grumble under my breathe as I pull a black, huge hoodie over my tank top and exchange my pair of cotton shorts for a pair of leggings and take my phone out to tell Ry and Jay about my where abouts.

But then I think better of it, giving a text to only Jay as not to get grilled when he reaches home before me and with that done I leave for the supermarket a few blocks down.

I walk there, using the hood to hide my face as I do so.

I take in the people around me in the street, the lamp lights seeming dull against the dark blue sky. The sun has set, but the lingering light makes the walk safer for me and the other pedlars.

I pass a few men walking around, a mother with her child and a few teens on bicycle. It took me about fifteen minutes to reach the store.

Inside, I walk past all the aisle, but my craving mind stops me before the hygiene aisle, leading me straight to the candy one. I smile as I spot my favourite dark chocolate and right as I lean over to pick a few bars up, I catch a reflection of a man.

A man I had passed while on my way here.

A man that I had seen once in a café with the boys.

I curse under my breath at the realisation that I am being followed, and by the looks of it, definitely not by Jay's men.

Can someone say a bad-freaking-day now?

I pick up a bar randomly and turn, observing how the man stands at the end of the aisle, waiting to follow me. I have seen the store, it has enough people that they won't attack here, but the sky has turned the curve to the inky darkness of the night.

Perfect time for a group attack.

I round him, looking as casual as I can, and head to get a pack of tampons and one of pads. I have no idea if I will even reach the apartment, or if I will be able to protect the packs, assuming I win against five or something build men, who definitely won't be as easy as Kane.

And all I have is a small knife with me, hidden.

I pick up the packs and go to the check out point, thanking gods above for the huge line. I take out my mobile, sending a SOS to Jay, with my live location.

One of the men joins the line, two people behind me and I close my eyes, groaning as dread fills me along with the fight and flight instinct.

I am a person who thinks things through and then decide what to do, which means that right now, my first choice will be flight as I know well enough that I won't be winning against them.

And when they catch me while I run, because I know they may, I will have no other option than to fight.

The cashier scans the items, giving me a smile as I hand over the cash and I return, what I can only assume to be a grimace.

Leaving the counter, I see the only man that is still inside is the one in line, who is currently speaking in low volume in the phone, no doubt telling the others outside of my arrival.

I scan the area for another way out when I see that a stack of newly arrived material in cardboard boxes are obscuring the view of the door for the man. I walk till I am positioned that neither him, nor his friends outside can see me, and then walking along with a group of ladies, hiding from plain sight, I walk back into the aisle area.

Being a frequent person of this spot, I know exactly where the store room lies. And the fact that there is a side door there.

A way out that is neither the back door the employs use, nor the front used by customers.

Keeping my head down, I walk towards my way of escaping and take out my phone, reading Jay's message that he is on his way here. It takes about half an hour to reach this place from his temporary office here, and that is if he speeds here.

He won't be here on time.

I do a quick scan of the area before I cross the aisle and open the side door. Peeking out I see no one, so I slide out and close the door behind me.

I cross the narrow alley, going up the steel stairs of the building next to it. The men won't take long to figure out that I am not in the store anymore, and then they will do a quick sweep, something they should have done before.

Climbing up till I reach the roof of the building, thankful that not a lot of people live in the old building. Using the height, and the darkness that surrounds the top to my advantage I look down to place where all the men are waiting at the front of the store.

As expected, a few minutes later they realize I am not out yet when the man inside joins them and they split to sweep.

Two going back in, one staying in the front and two going round the store, one from each side. Deciding it to be as much of a good luck as I will get, I stack my purchase in the hidden area and carefully swing down the stair, hidden in the dark.

Right as the man on this area sees the side door, I jump on his back from halfway the stair, wrapping my legs around his waist to stabilize me as he stumbles forward due to my weight and force. I take out the ear piece from his ear and cut the communication between him and his friends before he can inform them about me whereabouts.

It gives him enough time to pry me off his back and throw me back on the ground.

It hurt.

Falling on the hard concrete on my back.

White hot pain rips my back and I falter for a second before I see the man coming down on me with a punch. Immediately I roll to the opposite side and ignoring the pain in my back, I jump up using his almost kneeled position to my advantage as I bring my knee up in full force on his face.

A crack echoes as my knee connects with his nose, knocking his focus for a second, and making him fall on his knees properly.

A second is what it takes for me to turn and throw a round house kick to the side of his face.

His eyes roll back as he falls sidewise, unconscious.

I slowly go out of the alleyway, using the few lingering cars parked in front of the store to hide as I look for the others.

Catching the two inside men talking to one of the employs, the one going to the back must've reached the back door. The only one missing is the one who stayed back in front.

As I scan the area, my hood covering most of my face, I feel a hard grip on my left shoulder accompanied with a force that pulls me back.

I stumble, falling down again, the pain in my back getting more intense with another injury on the same area. I look up in time to see the man missing, a sneer on his face as he points a gun towards me.

"Looking for somebody girl?"

His raspy voice makes me flinch at his harshness. He looks at something across the dark parking lot, signalling something I don't bother to see as I throw my leg out, catching the back of his knees making him lose his posture.

Using the same momentum, I slide side- ways and away from the range of the hand gun for if his slip causes him to pull the trigger, and crouch low.

Looking around I find a beer bottle lying a little under the car next to me, which I use as a weapon, smashing it on his hand which held the gun.

He curses as glasses pierce his hand, the gun slipping as his body's natural reaction forced his hand open. He growls angrily, shaking his injured hand to let it get used to the pain, before he used his other hand to take a right cut at me.

It grazes my jaw, my step back taking me out of his range before I kick him in his side, going to land another one on his thigh.

But mid kick he catches it, using his muscles to swing my body into the car we were next to. Blinding pain shoots from my shoulder that connects forcefully to the gate of the car, almost more than the broken glass from the window that embeds itself in my arm.

I bite back the groan of pain that begs to come out, using a huge shard of glass from the car to slash the huge man, the glass catching his bicep.

He steps back, in order to stay out of my range when I notice the sense of hearing return to me, along with the sound of alarm the car continues to make due to the broken glass and the force it had experienced a few moments ago.

Right as I stabilize myself a bit, I see the huge man now being flank by another two men, equally muscular. Two men who were not there before. I breathe out sigh, it coming out with a shudder as I come to a conclusion.

There were not five men to begin with. There were seven.

I see the men inside the store making their way out running, the man behind the store no doubt coming to join this little party too.

I grip the shard in my hand tighter, not really caring how it was cutting some of my own skin, as it was my only weapon against men larger than me, with at least one, if not more being equipped with gun.

I gulp, my periods making the situation worse than it had to be.

Periods give cramps.

Cramps make fighting difficult.

And I am not about to win this one as it is. Add my situation to it, and call it a ready-made death.

My only bet is either I find a way to run, or stall till the time Jay can come.

As I take a small step back, my mind working as much as it can being banged on the solid ground twice, to try find an escape, a screeching sound adds to the already noisy atmosphere around me before a black car appears out of blue.

Hitting the guy who was flanking the one with injured hand with enough force that it takes all three of them down.

I look up at the driver as he comes out of the car, tears of relief filling up my eyes as I find the familiar icy blue ones looking at me with concern.

I see him scanning me once, before the blue in his eyes turns lighter as they turn emotionless and fall behind me to who I assume to be the two other men.
