Chapter 5: Pain
My ears roared with pain as I felt my body being lowered and placed onto something that might be called soft. I wouldn't have known because my nerves were screaming with agony.
"What happened to her?" A masculine voice yelled over the incoherent buzzing that had begun in my ears.
"Titan attack." Another male's voice said, and I thought I could recognize the undertones of Levi's voice.
"Shit. She's bad." A woman's voice said, and I figured she was a medic when I felt a rough, yet still delicate hand touched a few of my surface injuries gently. It still sent a rush of pain down my spine and my paralyzed nerves surged enough for me to feel the icy pain.
A gasp escaped my bloodstained lips, and I heard shouting, becoming more faint from the buzzing. The cart that must've been carrying me somewhere picked up it's pace and a rattling ran through my body again, and again, sending small jolts of agony through my ribs and open wounds.
The wheels stopped, and I tried to open my eyes, the attempt resulting in seeing a few different faces, which were blurry, and a terrible pain in my eyes as the remaining light in the day hit me all at once.
"Get her into the building!" the woman's voice shouted, the buzzing in my ears cutting off abruptly and letting all the other sounds of the world crash down on me at once.
I could hear the shouting of people and other loud noises, sending my mind whirling. My ears screeched as I heard a scream from someone. I flinched as I heard the yelling increase.
I moved my hands up to my ears, the small movement sending pain arching through me. "Stop..." I whispered.
There was a light touch on my forehead and I looked up into a man's face, his head blocking out the harsh light. His fingers were oh so delicate as his callouses rubbed my forehead gently, soothingly.
"Levi...?" I asked, not even realizing that tears had been streaming down my face.
He smiled and nodded. "I'm going to carry you inside, and then it'll be okay." He said. It looked as if he had been in this place before; comforting someone who was dying, and I knew that I was dying.
I hadn't realized there were tears rushing down my face, but I nodded faintly and Levi lifted me from the cart, my muscles seizing with terrible pain. I held my breath in expectation of pain as he began to walk toward the building quickly. But my body had already started shutting down, and now, the pain was only a faint pounding sensation in the back of my mind.
'Oh...' I thought as the sound of the door swinging shut after me sounded only like a whooshing of a feather. 'This isn't so bad after all.'
I felt my body being gently lowered onto a hard wooden surface that I thought was maybe a table. There was calling, and the sound of arguing, and I stared faintly at the sealing, my vision slightly blurry as the background noise ebbed and flowed.
My eyes slipped closed as a door slammed shut, and I heard multiple people talking quickly as metal tools rattled and water was poured into something.
It was hard to explain where I was, but it looked so much like a meadow. I could see a small lake far off in the distance, and I was positive that I was surrounded by tiny, white, daisies.
I heard the sound of garbled speech, and I spun around, looking for the voice, or voices. But I saw no one. I looked above me and saw perfect blue skies that were dotted with fluffy clouds.
"She's lost too much blood!" a voice said, clearer this time.
I looked around again, my eyes wide and my heart pounding in my chest. "Hello?" I screamed, seeing no signs of life.
"Save her!"
"Hello!" I screamed again at the speech, the words more clear.
"We can't!"
I was scared, and, as I looked up, I saw giant pieces of the sky beginning to fall down around me in great chunks that looked like they were splattered with red blood. I turned and began running, my breaths escaping in great heaves.
"There might be one way..." a voice said.
The earth began pulling at my feet, the small daisies feeling like razor blades. I winced, looking down. The ground was tumbling around me, and suddenly I was ripped away from the perfect meadow, being dragged down into a dark place.
"How? There's no way she can survive."
My hands grabbed handfuls of empty air.
"Titans heal awfully quickly."
"Do you actually think that could..."
I was ripped into harsh existence, and I felt cold air all over my body. My eyes searched, trying to see where I was, and I remembered that I was in the building. There were people standing around me, arguing, and my chest felt odd.
"She's awake!" someone cried.
There was a flurry of words and I lifted my head, my body numb. When my eyes met the sight of my chest, my face turned white. My flesh was cut open from my sternum down to the bottom of my ribs, and I could see my shattered ribs, and my barely moving heart.
I sighed. It must've just been a dream. My eyes fell closed and my head banged down onto the table I was on, and my body fell into unconsciousness.
But the last few words I caught were:
"Give her the injection if it will save her."
