Chapter 11: Captured
I couldn't tell how much time had passed when the carriage doors were flung open and I was dragged out. The feeling of the people's hands on me was a dull ache now, and I wondered why it didn't hurt as much as before. After a moment, in my half dazed state, it made sense. One, Hanji had said that it would get better after a time, and two, it had been at least a day. That is, if they hadn't stopped once on the way to the inner wall.
It was at least a days travel to the capital, on horseback maybe you could do it in three-quarters of a day, if you didn't stop. The landscape could change from open fields, to trees, to cobblestone city streets, and to even the occasional military encampment or castle owned by a rich family.
I heard people's shouts and jeers as I was carried into some building. When I looked up, I saw the spinning image of a large stone building. There was words at the top of it on a big metal plaque, but in my dazed state, I couldn't make out the letters.
The people around me in the streets were of the inner wall, all of them dressed in elegant silks or robes and jackets made of finely woven threads, that looked to be made out of wool. In the cold weather, I also spotted cloaks and jackets lined with rabbit fur around the neck or face.
To say in the least, the inner wall lived in comfort and grandeur, and whenever something threatened the lifestyle, at the moment that something being me, they wanted to eradicate it. I heard yells for me to be killed on the spot, the news of a person being changed into a titan on purpose seeming to be the highest of treason. I realized slowly, in my weak state of mind, that the word of what had happened to the wounded soldier, me, had spread fast.
I thought that the government might had tried to hide it from the people, but then I realized what their scheme was. If the people had a common interest, a person or thing that was threatening their way of life, then an anger and hatred for this thing would build and then if the military were to kill or capture me, the inner wall would have that much more faith that their government had only the interest of the people in their minds. I knew that the interest of the military was much different.
The military wanted complete and utter control of the entirety of humanity. Sure, they had the king, which most of the people of the outer walls or Survey Corps thought was nothing more than a figurehead, and they controlled most of the flow for merchants. But it seemed that they were always lacking, always wanting more power, more control. And if they showed the people that they would kill all those who even showed the slightest threat to the inner walls people, then the seed would be planted, and then their power would grow like a plumb tree; tall and strong, the fruit sweet, but on the inside, black and dark.
"Kill her!" a voice yelled, and I felt the cold surface of a stone hit the side of my head, causing it to explode with pain. There were more rocks and other hard objects, most of them missing me, and then there was the sound of iron gates closing. I looked up at the building we had passed through, and realized that, in fact, it wasn't a building, but the great gates to a big estate.
I looked around me, my head swimming. I saw finely cut flowers and bushed everywhere, fountains spraying water into the air. I looked up, seeing tall towers stretch upward towards the sky, waving flags at the top of them. I realized that it was the castle. The king's home.
I was dragged in through the front doors and then the small army of MPs carried me up what seemed like an endless amount of stairs. And then I we reached a door and it was pulled open, showing a finely furnished room. It was nicer than the one I had woken up in after I had been changed into the titan. Curtains around a bed that looked like it could hold ten people, gas lamps next to the bed on gleaming wooden tables. There was a desk with paintings above it, of the landscapes from around different parts inside the walls.
The MPs threw me to the ground, and I summoned enough strength to pull myself up into a sitting position, leaning heavily against the edge of the bed. "Get her cleaned up and presentable." One of the guards said, and I looked up to see about four women looking at me. Where had they come from?
"She'll be meeting with the King and Damon." The same guard said, slamming the door shut.
Damon. Why did the name sound so familiar? I tried to push the women away, but they overpowered me. "Get... get your hands off me!" I cried, my throat sounding raw.
They dragged me through a door to where there was a bathroom. There was a huge basin in it, filled with steaming water, and the woman began to tear my clothing off of me. I tried to pushed them away again, but one of them held my arms. This was humiliating. They submerged me into the water, and its warmth almost burned my skin.
As they washed me, I tried to place the name Damon as I attempted to pushed them away to no avail. It sounded so familiar, like I had known someone of the name when I had been only a few years younger, maybe two years...
And that's when I placed it. It was the name of the man I had been betrothed to in the underground. I felt my throat close as panic overtook me. There was no way that it could be the man, it was only a coincidence.
But no. I knew. The Damon from the underground I had thought was from a higher family down there. But he was someone important from the surface. And as my mind clicked, I knew who he was.
He was the king's son.
Hey everyone! I know. I know. I took the longest time to update this, and it's not the longest part, but you'll have to forgive me. I have no idea where this story is going, but i think that I may have an idea. I'm glad that there are a few of you who are reading this, and I hope that you continue to do so!
Love, you Writer-chan
