The Plague
She woke up to the pungent smell of hospital disinfect invading her nostrils. The room was obstantley silent apart from her heavy breathing and the beep beep sound that's often heard from the monitor as a sign of living.
Slowly, she opened her eyes squinting in an attempt to sharpen the blurred images before her.
Glancing around, she couldn't take in the fact that she was in a deserted, blue and white schemed hospital bedroom laying hopelessly in what it seemed a typical hospital bed. Feeling quite powerless and heavy, she could not move her head, her hand or her body.
The place looked nothing like a room where a patient was motivated to get better. The sickly green color of the linen, if anything the murky room was making her even more naseous.
Trying to ask herself where she was, she suddenly realized how stupid it was to ask such silly questions at this point in time. The right question for the occasion should be, How long have I been here ? She thought to herself, shutting her eyes, trying to remember what had exactly happened.
Then it all hits her with a bang. The memory of it starting to occupy her thoughts, all jumping in one after the other. Panicking, and trying to remain still. The pain jolted throughout her body. It didn't hurt as much as the realization that she had lost her baby once again, the only hope to accompany her on this painful journey had left her half way.
"Hold on, you'll be fine." A voice said trying to console her. She didn't want to hold on. " Who brought me here? " With a hand travelling to her face, pressing the throbbing area on her right temple. She felt a scar and flinched at the pain.
Trying to get up, stepping on the cold, white tiles, she instantly falls back on to the bed. Her body, engulfing the pain, as if it was objecting the decision to stand up.
Laying there pathetically for the pain to wash away staring at the ceiling, illuminating with white florescent lights. Perhaps waiting for some help from the hospital staffs. " I still don't know how long I have been here or how I got here." She turned to the middle aged, brown blonde haired lady by her bed side hoping to get answers to series of her questions.
"Young miss, I think you should get some rest. We'd do more of talking later. " The lady answered, " As for who brought you here, your husband, Ken came running for help next door so my husband and I came here to ensure you were fine."
So she is my next door neighbor, she said to herself in awe as this was the first time she was spending outside for the past three months.
" Your husband tells me you work as a tour manager and haven't been home for the past four months." The lady said interrupting her clouds of thoughts. " By the way, am Penelope Parker. You can call me Penny. My husband is Harris Parker ."
" I am sorry. I didn't mean to be so rude." She said. " My name is Theresa but you can call me Tessa."
Tessa had managed to envelope all her pain in seconds. Normally, she would break down in tears at the knowledge of her miscarriage but now even though she hadn't been told, she knew it deep down. This baby was gone, just like the others.
Still in thoughts of what had happened last night, Tessa continued the conversation with her next door neighbor whom she had the opportunity to speak to in months. The previous occupants of the medium sized bungalow, covered in blue - yellow paint had only gotten caught a glimpse of her rather once or twice. Those were on rare occasions.
They never spoke to each other. The Thompson's, they went by that name. They had a little boy who was aged five, he was homeschooled by his mother. She was red haired, blue eyed, petite and fit. Her husband was a banker. They owned a red saloon car and had thanksgivings almost every weekends.
Tessa knew almost everything there was to know about them but they didn't. She would have made her presence known to them, if she had a chance but she wasn't granted one so ever since, she never bothered to spy on her neighbors. That was why she didn't have an idea of who Mrs. Penny Parker was, since she never bothered to look out the windows any longer.
Tessa remembered all her dreams, her aspirations as a little girl. All that seemed to have shattered into broken pieces now. She had lost another baby. Hope was lost. Another means of bringing a ray of sunshine to her life had been put to an end. Just when she thought she was going to turn out victorious, everything came falling back.
Once again, she had lost.
