chapter xvi
"Lexi." My dad smiled as I ran to him, my arms out stretched, ready to hug him for the first time in months, but instead he sidestepped. "I'm sorry." He whispered as I looked confused. "I can't hug you. It's not your time yet." Dad had a sad smile on his face.
Wes, Kris, Judy, Tatum and Liv stepped forwards from behind him. Tears poured down my cheeks as I saw them all, none of them smiling or hugging me like they used to. "Am I dead?" I asked, the blood gone, my insides where they should be, my head free of pain. Wes nodded his head sadly as I gasped.
"You're in the inbetween." Liv smiled. "You still have a chance, but if you hug any of us, you die out there. We all love you but they need you more than we do." Judy nodded as tears swam in her eyelids too.
"Sweetheart, you are so strong. We've been watching over you and we are all so proud. But you can't stay here." I shook my head as I tried to hug my dad once more, but he stepped backwards.
Sobs wracked my body as I crouched down. Only now taking in my surroundings. Are we?- Is this the field?" I asked, a lump in my throat, Wes nodded as memories flashed through my head.
It was the field where when we were thirteen Wes gave me a promise ring and said he would marry me and that we would live happily forever, with our kids. But that dream was stolen from us, but this, this was my happy place.
Except it was no longer happy, it was a haunting reminder of what could have been but is now impossible to be. "I want to stay here. Please. There is nothing for me back there." My chest heaved with the reality of my statement, everyone had tears in their eyes as I pleaded to stay. "Don't send me back." My vision was blurred as they disappeared and soon it was just Wes and I.
Wes stepped forwards and hovered his hand over my cheek, waiting to catch my tears but falling through the imaginary hand. "I love you, but you need to be careful, don't trust anyone- not Ethan, not Bailey. Trust your gut." He told me as he too disappeared as the field fell apart and so did I.
Pressure rested on my chest as I heard shouts and sirens. "Clear!" Someone shouted. "We have a rhythm! HR 89, BP 60/45, respirations 79%" Someone called out as my eyes flickered open and shut. "She's waking up. Ma'am, stay back, we need space to work." Cough after cough left my mouth as I moved my shaking hand to take away the mask.
"That is my daughter you bastard! You are not keeping me from her." Tears formed in my eyes as I realized who it was, and saw her leaning over me and stroking my hair. "Oh, baby." She muttered as the door shut and we started moving.
My mouth opened and shut in an attempt to speak. "Sh, don't speak. You're safe, momma's here now al. I am so sorry." A whimper left my mouth as my body felt on fire.
"H-hurts." I whispered as my eyes slipped closed again, mom holding my hand tight. "Don't l-let go." I sighed as I let myself fall into the abyss of unconsciousness.
