chapter xv.
Tara had kept her promise and stayed with me the whole time I had tried to sleep, unfortunately not able to get more than ten minutes at a time before being woken by a nightmare or pain. Sam had called my mom and she hadn't answered, but Aunt Sid picked up when I rang her, the sound of her voice sent me into a blubbering mess. Tara took over and explained everything, my godmother promised to try and get my mom.
They were finally discharging me, but I still felt as if I would be a prisoner. Sam, Tara, Chad and Mindy always babied me and now they had a reason to. I was the youngest of the friend group and they saw me as the weak little sibling. Sam walked beside me as I walked along on my crutches, a little unsteadily. "How-" I panted, pain radiating up my side. "did, you do this- l-last year?" We stopped as I took a breath of my inhaler.
She smiled slightly as they all slowed down, my exhaustion was evident and I knew they were all worried about me.
Within thirty minutes we had made it back to the apartment, the lift broken and Chad eventually picking me up and carrying me into the apartment. "My knight in shining armour." I joked as he bowed and held out an invisible hat to me. "Dork." I snorted as he feigned hurt, Tara and Sam helping me into my room and to change.
As if we were back in Woodsboro' those eight almost nine months ago, it felt like before. Tara and Sam helping me to clean my wounds and staying with me until I fell asleep everynight. I hated being so dependent on somebody, but I was too exhausted to do everything myself and I knew that they were glad to help.
Once I had pulled on my vest and shorts, Tara helped to get me into my bed before both of the Carpenter sisters curled up on either of my sides. The exhaustion slowly took over, as I felt myself relaxing, Tara's fingers softly running through my hair.
Within ten minutes of sleep, I'd woke up drenched in sweat and shaking, my heart hammered in my chest as my blood roared in my ears. I whimpered out of pain and fear as my door slammed open.
I flinched violently at the sharp noise as soft arms wrapped around my body. "I've got you. sh. It's okay. You're okay. We're safe. You're safe. Ria, I need you to take a deep breath." Tears cascaded down my sodden cheeks as my head span with thoughts rushing in and out a hundred miles an hour.
Her hands grabbed onto mine and applied pressure to them, a grounding technique my dad had taught the friend group if they ever needed to quickly calm me down. "I got you. I got you baby." Sam quietly shushed me as she rocked me to and fro, the grief of the last attacks coming back to me. My dad's lifeless corpse looked up at me as I looked down at my bloody hands.
"Slumber party with the Surviving Five." Chad hollered, Sam rolling her eyes as a look of confusion washed over me. I slowly mouthed the phrase as I carefully got onto my feet and limped out of my room, Sam helping me.
Tara and Mindy sat either side of me as Chad looked pleased with himself. "Did he just give us a nickname?" I asked quietly, Mindy nodding her head as Tara cringed. "You can't give yourself a nickname dingus." Mindy nodded as Chad shot me a look that feigned hurt and betrayal.
He pumped his fist proudly as Tara and I burst out laughing. I zoned out from exhaustion as Tara moved my head to rest on her shoulder. Clearly sensing the pain and exhaustion radiating throughout my body.
I was vaguely aware of cute boy from across the hall being mentioned and the squeals of my friends before it was interrupted with bangs and groans coming from Quinn's room. Mindy groaned. "Looks like she's entertaining a gentleman caller, again." Tara quipped as Sam smirked at the comment.
Simultaneously, our phones lit up with a picture from Danny's phone. "Oh my god." I gasped as Tara helped me to stand up and rested my arm around her shoulder.
Mindy shouted out as Chad moved infront of Tara and I. Sam running to the kitchen, but finding all of the knives gone. Quinn fell out of her room, bloodied and lifeless, her corpse landed on Anika as Ghostface approached Tara and I. A whimper of fear escaped my lips as Chad pulled my hand. "We can't leave them!" I cried, Tara and Chad trying to pull me with them.
I heard Anika screaming Mindy's name and walked as fast as I could back into the apartment and locking them out. It was to keep them safe, I told myself. I walked into Anika tackling ghostface and screaming as her blood spurted out of the wound in her abdomen. The masked attacker dragged the knife up through her skin, making a jagged line throughout her stomach.
Sam whacked it on the head with the empty knife block pulling Mindy and Anika with her, I started to limp forwards as a hand grasped around my ankle and pulled me down. I fell onto the floor as the air was knocked out of me, the attacker straddled me once more and drove the knife into my collarbone and pulled down to my shoulder blade. A scream of pain left my lips as the knife was plunged into my chest. I pushed both my palms against the hands wielding the knife and pushed away from my body.
Slowly the knife edged closer to my neck and I relived the night long ago, where I had been clinically dead for four minutes because of my throat being slit by one of the killers. Hands wrapped around my neck as I knocked the knife out of their hands, Mindy slowly pulled me away from ghostface as Sam dealt kick after kick. "In here!" Sam pointed as we made a run for it, the door locking behind us. Mindy, Sam and I pushed Quinn's dresser across the door.
As quick as the banging had started it had stopped, which didn't mean anything good.
"Fuck, the other door." I muttered as I slowly got up to shut it. Seeing Quinn's gentleman friend very dead. "That guy's dead. Very dead." I looked up and met the cold hard stare of the killer, I slowly moved backwards and slammed the door in its face.
As I made it back to the others, I saw Danny edging a ladder across the gap. "Sam go!" I shouted as I held the door shut, the frame splintering behind me. She nodded and slowly clambered across the ladder.
Once she had made it across, Mindy tried to send Anika who refused. "Mindy go, I'll send her next, I promise." I held Anika upright and tried to support us both, we were both losing a lot of blood and quickly. The two hugged and kissed as Mindy pulled herself across, Danny and Sam pulling her in the other side. "Okay Anika, go. I'll be right behind you." She cried out in pain as I got her on the ladder. "I'll see you on the other side, yeah?" She nodded slowly, as I held the ladder in place.
She made it about halfway when Mindy and the others started screaming. I turned to look but instead was met with a burning pain in my shoulder, and then my back, over and over the knife was plunged in and out of my skin. A scream of agony left my lips as I tried to stay strong, make sure Anika made it across safely.
I didn't care if I died, I just needed them to survive.
"Anika get over here right now!" Mindy screamed as I stayed standing, shaking with the effort. The knife sliced through my back, blood splattering the floor as I felt my body begin to sag. He picked me up effortlessly and threw my onto the floor, my head hit the wall as I dropped.
The room span as my vision blurred once more. My head was on fire.
I looked up to see Ghostface moving the ladder. "No!" I shouted, pushing myself up and off the floor, adrenalin fuelling my veins. Anger surfaced as I jumped on their back, hitting out at them.
If I was gonna go, it wouldn't be without a fight, and a damn good one at that. "Tell Ethan I love him." I shouted to the others, I knew I would probably die and I honestly didn't mind anymore.
I would see my dad and my boyfriend, I would be safe from harm and I could be happy.
"Leave her alone, you fuck!" Sam shouted as Anika kept moving, slowly but steadily.
She was almost there, if I could just hold on a little longer.
Anika realised what was happening and seemed frozen in fear. "Ani, please, go!" I shouted, gritting my teeth to bear the pain. Her eyes locked with mine as I nodded, a small smile crossed my pain ridden face as she pushed herself forwards. Slowly but surely moving forwards.
One second she was on the ladder, and the next she was gone.
Ghostface pulled the knife across my stomach, almost completely gutting me as I screamed. My blood poured out of my body, my eyes fluttered as they picked me up and held me over the ladder. I knew my time was coming. "Kill me instead. You know you want to. Imagine the fame you would get of killing the legacy of four original characters. Think of the fame. So kill me. Fucking kill me!" I shouted as they debated it. My friends shouting their protests.
My answer seemed to be him throwing me onto the floor and shaking the ladder. Anika was almost there, her fingertips brushing Mindy's as Sam held onto her hand. "I don't want to die, Sam." I heard her whimpering as my eyes fluttered, I felt physically sick and emotionally dead as I heard her screams. My body was hoisted up into the air as I closed my eyes, my blood coating my body and hair.
All I could focus on was Mindy's heartbroken screams. Ghostface twisted their fist in my hair and smashed my head into the wall and then hung me over the windowsill. My head facing Sam as she sobbed into Danny. I held up five fingers as Mindy nodded, sobbing.
My eyes slipped closed as my chest ceased to hurt and I saw my dad, Kris, Wes, Liv and Judy.
