I think people forget what I messed up childhood Leorio had. He may be the comedic relief character, but the man has been through a lot. He grew up in extreme poverty, and lived in a very violent neighborhood for most of his childhood. His best friend died, just because he couldn't pay for treatment.

This lead to Leorio wanting to become a doctor, so that he could help children who didn't have money for treatment. But then he didn't have enough money to get into med-school. So he had to take the hunter exam.

After all of that he has the money he needs, but he constantly worries about Gon and Killua and Kurapika. Because Gon and Killua are like sons to him, and Kurapika is one of his best friends. And he had to watch Gon die (sort of) and then he had to fight Ging just so that Gon could meet his father.
