Hey! So nice to meet you!
Nice to meet you too!
Let's start then!
What inspires you as an author?
My favorite books, movies, and television shows, as well as my own life experiences and the people around me.
Do you think you have experiences that have shaped who you are today and how you write? Which has the most impact?
Unfortunately, I can't pinpoint any specific experience that has impacted me the most, since they've been countless and I believe that I'm still developing as a writer.
Can you think of something you want to do or try in the future that you think will shape you as a writer?
Perhaps traveling to another country/ learning about another culture.
That sounds amazing! Do you have a particular country or culture in mind?
Not at the moment, but I might have an idea in the future.
Where you from? How do you think this shapes how you write?
I live in Australia, but my family's origins lie elsewhere. Growing up, I always was caught between two very different cultures, so most of my protagonists experience social alienation in some form. Granted, I don't always do it consciously, and it's only recently that I've begun to notice this trend in my stories.
Do you think this adds to your writing or does it hold you back?
I wouldn't say that it's necessarily a bad thing at this point. After all, it helps to have some familiarity with what one is writing about.
That said, maybe I could change things up in a future work and create a character who is mostly comfortable with their place in society.
Do you think you will feel less alienated if your character fits in with society?
Likely not. I influence my characters and not the other way around.
I see. Do you think your perceptions of the world shape your characters? Do you think they are a representation of what you wish to become?
My own perception of the world definitely plays a part when I write them.
However, I don't consider my characters to be ideals to aspire to.
Interesting. What was your favorite to write?
Story, character, or something else?
Story.
I'd say that it's a tie between "The Tour Guide" and "The Exploits of Miss Magpie."
The former draws heavily from Japanese mythology and features multiple character perspectives, as well as lots of twists and turns. It's been a challenging story to write but in a good way.
The latter is a bit more straightforward since it mostly focuses on just one character's perspective as she navigates ancient Korean Society while trying her best to fit in. I'm a bit of a history buff so I enjoy researching the time period and portraying both the similarities and differences between then and now.
That sounds like fun. Thank you for your time.
Thanks for yours too.
