Ten-year-olds Scarlet Fischer, Ruby Santiago, and Sapphire and Emerald Darren, have been best friends since their daycare days. Now they are about to start fifth grade at Rendler Elementary School with the rest of their classmates. They experience a brand new teacher, Ms. Redingbyrd, who's rumored to be the easiest teacher in school. They do have to go through harder subjects like Earth science, their multiplication tables and long division in math, and English is even tougher.

This school year has trials throughout the whole year: they have to decide who the president/ leader of the club/clique is (it gets to be Scarlet), Scarlet lets in Diamond Moore, their new club member, to their club/clique on a trial basis, and they have trouble the whole year through thinking of a name for the club/clique. As the leader of the group, Scarlet has to decide whether or not Diamond gets to stay in the club or not. To do this, Scarlet hangs out with Diamond a lot, which results in Ruby, Scarlets' best friend, getting upset and growing jealous of Diamond.
