✧The Unexpected✧
So yeah check out that gif I made of Darlotte (which is the ship name that was chosen for Derek and Charlotte.) They are pretty much my Brotp.
Chapter 22 ✧The Unexpected✧
I stood in silence outside of Derek's loft, trying to gather up the courage to knock on the bulky metal door. I was slightly hungry and, honestly, a bit of a mess seeing as I had just walked all the way here from the McCall household. And by mess I do not just mean physically-though my hair would need a lot of tending to before it would be Lydia-approved. I was more of an emotional mess than anything else, though. I just didn't know how I was supposed to feel after everything that has been going on.
Eventually, I let out a long sigh before raising my fist and banging it on the large metal slab that Derek called his front door. It took only seconds for the door to slide open and Derek to look down at me with his brow furrowing in confusion. I guess I got so caught up in the mist of my emotional breakdown and forgot to tell him I was coming.
"Is that my jacket?" Derek questioned as he motioned toward the leather material I had clutched in one of my hands. I nodded slowly as Derek opened his door even further, "Do you need to come inside?"
I nodded once more as I walked inside, my eyes on the ground as I entered my former home. After I had walked all the way to the wall of windows at the end of Derek's loft, I decided I was going to have to turn to face him. I did just that and saw Derek leaning against one of the support beams as his eyes stayed trained on me, probably still confused as to why I was here. Maybe he knew that I had pieced some things together. Or maybe he thought I had finally broken and had turned delirious or something like that.
"Derek," I started but just that word alone caused my voice to crack. Worry fell over the ex-alpha's face as he pushed off of the beam and looked like he was debating whether or not he should come over to me. But I took a deep breath as I looked down at his jacket before speaking once more, "Derek, when I got your jacket I-I found blood on it."
Derek lifted his chin ever so slightly as he examined me, trying to figure out how much I knew. "And?"
"Were you hurt?"
"Why does it matter?"
I sighed as I walked over to Derek and held the jacket out to him which he quickly took. "Can you just tell me what happened, Derek? Please?"
This time it was Derek who sighed as he fell victim to my pleading blue-eyes. "I was shot but I'm fine now."
"Where?" I pressed on.
Derek shook his head as he motioned to his side, "Here."
Before I really thought about it, I reached out and pressed my hand to Derek's side. I had barely put any pressure on it when Derek grabbed my wrist and pushed it away, but not before I saw him wince ever so slightly from the pain. I gulped as the two of us made eye contact. It looks like my worries were correct.
"You're not healing," I concluded as my hand fell back to my side, "What else isn't working?"
"Everything," Derek told me and I felt myself gasp ever so slightly. I knew that I had suspected such a thing but hearing Derek confirm it was like I was discovering the truth all over again.
"How?" I forced out in a hushed whisper.
Derek shrugged as he tossed his jacket onto the couch, "Whatever Kate did to me is still affecting me."
I ran a hand through my tangled brown hair as I took all of this in for the second time. It was a lot to maul over, especially with everything else going on right now. "What are we going to do?"
At this Derek smiled slightly as he raised his eyebrows, "Something's different about you."
"Well I'm sorry for trying to be helpful for once," I muttered as I looked away from him.
"Charlotte," Derek sounded almost amused and if his muscle index was so high I just might've punched him. After everything I had come to him and now I felt like he was treating me like I was a foolish child who wasn't old enough to pitch in with things. He was wrong though, I was going to help. "Have you forgotten the past few months?"
I looked up at him in surprise as I shook my head. "What about them?"
Derek sighed as he leaned back on the beam and crossed his arms. "When I first met you, Isaac had to do all the talking as you stood behind him shaking. That night when I offered him the bite, you were there too. You looked like you would rather fall into the grave your brother had just dug instead of having to be within five feet of me, and not just because I was a werewolf. What your dad did to you had scarred you. But now you're pushing past them and figuring out things all on your own. I'm proud of you Charlotte and Isaac would be too."
At the mention of my brother, I felt something well up inside of me. I missed Isaac and I wished with all my heart he would come back for even just a day. I felt like there was a hole in my heart because he was gone. Nobody else could fill that gaping hole and nobody could understand me like he did.
Well, nobody except for Liam.
I shook my head slightly as I thought of the young beta. Yes, I knew I liked him and yes, I trusted him way more then I should seeing as I hardly knew the guy but there was just something about him. Something that scared and confused me and right now I didn't want to concentrate on that. I had came here for Derek and only Derek.
"And all of this seems to be happening just in time," Derek said, cutting me into my thoughts and causing me to look up at him.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Correct me if I'm wrong but your birthday is in like a week, right?" Derek questioned. My eyes widened as I realized he was right. In just under one week I would finally be turning fifteen. Derek let out a low huff I assumed was a chuckle before he continued. "Fifteen is a pretty good age. You can finally change things around for yourself and maybe start dating."
My already wide eyes stared up at Derek, "Dating?"
"Dating," Derek confirmed as he let out another huff-chuckle, "Don't look so horrified, it's not as bad as it sounds."
"Wait, Derek, Stop." I demanded suddenly as I waved around my hands to get him to do just that, "You're changing the subject! I came here to talk about you and your lack of werewolf abilities. You could be dying or something."
"I'm not dying," Derek claimed as he rolled his eyes like it was the most absurd assumption he'd ever heard. Screw being a Sour Wolf -- Which is how Stiles like to refer to him as-- Derek Hale was taking after his uncle and turning into a Sassy Wolf. Or, I suppose, just sassy as he wasn't to much of a wolf anymore.
"You don't know, do you?" I asked him quietly. Derek quirked an eyebrow and I realized the joking part of the conversation was over. "The name that cracked the last part of the list, it was yours, Derek."
At first, Derek looked a bit taken aback. Then, as the new information settled in, Derek shrugged his shoulders slowly as his trademark scowl found it's home back on his face. "And the other one's were Allison and Aiden."
I nodded slowly but before anything else could be said, someone else knocked on Derek's door. The two of us shared a confused as the knocking continued.
"Stay here," Derek instructed as he moved towards the door. I did as I was told and watched the door slide back until it revealed Scott and Lydia with an unfamiliar man standing in between the two of them.
"Charlotte?" Scott asked as he looked past Derek and back to me. I felt myself go rigid as he looked at me. I had yet to talk to Scott since he had 'come back to life' or whatever. I just didn't know how I was supposed to ignore the fact that he hadn't felt it was necessary to fill me in on everything. I knew I had to be over-thinking this way too much but I couldn't help but feel hurt.
Derek looked over his shoulder at me and shot me a questioning look, probably wondering what my problem. But, instead of questioning me, Derek turned back to Scott. "Why are you guys here?"
"We, uh, kind of need your help," Scott responded sheepishly as he looked over to the guy he and Lydia had brought along.
Derek sighed before stepping back and holding his arm out to signal they were allowed to enter. Scott smiled at him gratefully as he and the others entered the loft. I felt Scott's eyes fall on me once more but I just looked down. I didn't know what I expected from him but I did know that I wasn't quite to talk to him. I still needed time to think about everything.
"What exactly is going on right now?" The unfamiliar guy asked. I took a moment to push away the awkward tension between Scott and I as I looked over this new person. As I took time to concentrate on him I realized that there was something about him that seemed familiar. His charming green eyes, gelled up dark hair, and impressive muscles all seemed to be yelling at my memories to remember who he was but I just couldn't put my finger on it. Maybe I've into him around town before.
"This is Jordan Parrish, a deputy at the Sheriffs department," Lydia filled us in. A deputy at the Sheriff's office, maybe that's how I knew him. I've been in and out of that place a few too many times. And the name Jordan Parrish also rang a bell. If I had the nerve to make bets, I'd put some money on saying that this guy was on the deadpool too.
Derek gave the young deputy a look that told me the two of them had crossed paths before, "And he is here because..."
"Becuase another deputy set me on fire," Jordan Parrish explained, "And I somehow survived."
Derek and Scott exchanged a look that I assumed held a conversation about Derek helping them find out what was going on since he was basically one of our only confidants who had so much experience with the supernatural.
Eventually, Derek nodded and turned back to the deputy, "Hold out your hands."
Without hesitation, Jordan Parrish held his arms out to Derek. The Hale began examining the arms of the should-be-severely-scarred man as Jordan kept his eyes on Derek's face like he was waiting for him to give off some kind of information through his facial expressions.
"He covered you in gasoline?" Derek clarified as he turned Parrish's hands over while Parrish nodded his head in response.
"It's the hair and nails, isn't it?" Lydia questioned, "The parts of the body that are essentially dead."
"Well, they should be gone," Derek agreed.
"I was set on fire," Jordan reminded the pair, "All of me should be gone!"
"Not if you're like them," I said as I nodded towards the others who seemed surprise by my willingness to talk to him. Honestly, I don't know how I managed to pull together the sentence. Maybe it was because Scott was here and a part of me wanted to show him that I could do something. Or maybe it was even because Parrish wasn't really all that intimidating. Either way, I had managed to do the impossible and I couldn't help but feel some pride flare up inside of me.
"Like them?" He repeated.
"I don't think he's like us," Derek said to me.
"Then what is he?" Lydia asked the one question that all of us seemed to be eager to know the answer too.
Derek shrugged his shoulders. "Sorry but I have no idea."
"But you knew about Jackson and Kira," Scott pointed out.
"This is a little out of my experience," Derek told him, "There might be something in the beastiary. Did you try Argent?"
"I don't know where he is."
"Wait, hold on," Parrish interjected, the attention quickly turning back to him, "What's a beastiary? Actually, that's not even my first question. Just... just tell me one thing. Are all of you like Lydia? Are you all psychic?"
"Psychic?" Derek restated as he raised his eyebrows in amusement.
"Yeah," Parrish nodded.
"Not exactly," Scott answered.
"Okay, then, what are you?"
Scott looked over to Derek for some guidance but the older man just jerked his head a little at Scott as if to say 'Go right on ahead, what;s the worse that could happen'. Well there's a lot of bad things that could happen but Scott turned back to face Deputy Parrish anyways. The true alpha closed his eyes for a second and when he reopened them they were glowing a vibrant red.
Parrish looked shocked as he stared at Scott for a few moments before saying, "Well... that's unusual."
I almost laughed but I was too surprised at how well he was taking this to say anything. I guess being set on fire and surviving without a mark would leave someone a bit open minded.
"And there's a lot more unusual things we will have to explain," Scott told him with a kind smile. I watch as Scott interacted with Parrish and realized how stupid I was for being mad at my friend. All he wanted to do was protect me and even if he did so in a way I hated, he was only trying to do what was best. Scott wasn't perfect and I knew that, I should've known that all along.
Derek came over to me as Scott launched into an explanation about Beacon Hills' supernatural community, "You should probably be getting home soon."
"What? Why?" I questioned, once again feeling left out.
"It's late, Charlotte and you have school tomorrow," Derek said, "Anyways, I'm sure everything will be alright."
"You know that sounds eerily familiar to the speech you gave me about Isac being alright the night before I started my freshman year. Do you remember what happened then?" I questioned him, "The alpha pack tried killing Isaac while I was forced to go to school and they would've succeeded if Braeden hadn't helped him."
"But your brother ended up staying alive and everything worked out," Derek pointed out and I couldn't help but roll my eyes at him. He was kind of missing the point.
"Derek, I don't want to be left in the dark," The sentence came out more as a pleaded than anything else 'but Derek still smiled down at me.
"Charlotte, the only one in the dark is Parrish. While we help enlighten him you should go home and study or something," Derek told me, "I'll see if I can get Lydia to drive you."
Lydia ended up being able to drive me home. The drive started in silence which, of course, I was more then happy about. Who needs to jibber jabber when you can get lost into the little world you make up inside of your mind?
But, sadly, all good things come to an end. Once Lydia came to a red light she slowed the car to a complete stop and turned to look at me.
"So," Lydia started off as she pursed her ruby lips, "What;s going on with you and Liam?"
Why do people insist on asking me these kinds of things and turning me into an uncomfortable mess? Do they find it entertaining?
"I-I don't know what you mean."
"Sweetheart, you know exactly what I mean," Lydia assured me as the tips of her lips tugged upwards a bit.
I squirmed in my seat some as I looked up at the light. "I-it's green n-now."
Lydia looked at me for a second more before smacking her lips and pushing her foot down on the gas pedal. "Don't worry, I'll get it out of you eventually."
I swallowed hard as I shrunk back into the passengers seat some, suddenly a lot more intimidated by Lydia. She might not have claws or fangs but that girl still had her ways and I knew to be intimidated by her.
Once she pulled up to the McCall household, I shot her a quick thanks before practically sprinting inside. When I was in the safety of my own bedroom I flopped down on my own bed, only to hear something to crinkle under me as I did. I sat up and flicked on my bedside lamp before looking to see what I had laid down. It was a envelope and as I turned it over I noticed it had my name scrawled along the front of it. I gasped as I recognized the handwriting.
It was Isaac's.
