Chapter 11- Scrimmage Gone Wrong

I'm not entirely sure how but I managed to piece myself together and push myself off the wall. At first my legs felt wobbly and my heart felt cold and abandoned but I pushed through it all. The game would be starting soon and I needed to be there for Liam and the others. Plus, I really had promised Mason I'd sit with him during the game.

So as quickly as I could - which, in all honestly, wasn't that quickly seeing as I felt like I weighed a million pounds-I got to the bathroom, changed my slightly damp shirt, and hurried out to the fields. By the time I had managed to stay at the edges of the crowd and wave Mason over, the team was making their way out onto the field.

"Hey, is that Liam's shirt?" Mason questioned as he poked at my new wardrobe.

I couldn't control the blush that spreading across my cheeks as I looked down at my feet while I walked. "Liam gave me a shirt because I got water on mine."

"I'm not surprised Liam whipped off his shirt for you. He's not ashamed of those muscles, you know?" Mason teased further which was not at all helping to stop my excessive blushing.

I didn't have it in me to give him a response which didn't really surprise since I'm, well me. Mason is kind though and respects my social anxiety boundaries as he helps me push through the crowds so we can meet up with Liam before the game. I felt like I was going to get trampled by the large mass of teenagers but, with a lot of Mason's help, we made our way to Liam who was finishing to put on his gear.

When Liam saw us approaching him he shot us both a smile, "You made it over."

"Yeah, Charlotte wanted to talk to that McCall dude," Mason explained and I looked up at him in confusion; I had not came over here to see Scott-no offense to him or anything-and even if I had he was currently busy talking to Kira. I swear I noticed Liam's smile seemed to falter some which caused Mason to smile widely, "I'm kidding man, we wanted to tell you to go kick ass out there."

Liam nodded, his smile not quite back up on his face as he looked at the other team. His focus seemed to hone in on Brett before he turned back to Mason and I. "I don't care if he's a foot taller than me, I think I can take him."

I followed his gaze and took a look at Brett who currently didn't have a shirt on. I realize that he's a huge asshole and I hate him for what he said to Liam but god did he have an amazing body.

"Yeah," Mason said. I peeled my eyes away from Brett to see Mason staring at the prep student as he pulled a shirt over his head. I smiled, feeling a little less bad for almost drooling over Brett and his body.

"What do you think you guys are doing?" Liam asked the two of us, causing me to jump out of my slight daze.

"What?" Mason asked as he too looked away from Brett. I watched as Liam raised his eyebrows at me and then looked to Mason to see if he had anything else to say, which he did. "Us? We're just agreeing with you. Like, I'm being agreeable."

Liam glanced back and forth between Mason-who was not doing a good job at adverting his eyes from Brett-and the Devenford Prep player. "You think he's hot, don't you?"

I quickly shook my head as I made sure to keep my eyes on Liam instead of Brett. It wasn't a hard task though, Brett may have been half naked but he was still not Liam. Liam was attractive on a whole different level. The way he was confident on the field but so nice and even fragile off the field was something Brett will never be. Nobody will ever be like Liam.

"No, no! Not at all, no way!" Mason answered a little too quickly. I bit back a smile as Mason then looked back at Brett and started nodding a little. "Maybe, maybe yeah. Maybe a little."

"He wants to destroy me." Liam reminded his best friend.

"I think you could definitely take him," Mason assured Liam, his eyes still ceasing to leave Brett, "And then give him to me."

I tried to hold back my amusement but once Liam shook his head and began to laugh I couldn't help but do the same. He looked up at me and smiled which was an action I gladly returned.

"No, just go out there and kick their smug prep school ass's man." Mason told Liam with a smile.

"Alright," Liam agreed, still smiling as he and Mason did a little fist bump. Mason looked backed at Brett one more time before turning away and heading to the bleachers.

"So, um good luck," I told Liam once Mason was gone.

"No promises that I won't hurt you and Mason's little lover boy," What Liam said was meant to come out as a tease but there was this serious look in his eyes.

"I'd much rather see you beat him and the rest of his team," I assured him, also meaning to sound joking but it just didn't reach that point as we continued to look at each other.

Coach began yelling at someone in the distance which caused us to finally blink and look away. I concentrated on the grassy field below my feet but I couldn't make myself head up to the bleachers just yet.

"How's the shirt?" Liam asked me suddenly, not seeming to be rushing to finish getting ready.

"G-good. It's really good." I stammered out like the idiot I am.

Liam bit his lip ever so slightly as he let out a slow smile. "I'm glad."

"I should probably go find Mason," I decided once I realized I had to be blushing. I probably resembled a pathetic little tomato at this point. "Keep it clean out there, Liam."

"As long as your close by I think I should be good," Liam assured me. I nodded before heading towards the seats Mason had gotten, a small smile on my face as I walked.

"You look happy," Mason noticed as he let me slide into the inside seat so I wouldn't be too surrounded by people.

"We aren't losing yet so yeah, I am," I joked nervously, hoping I didn't jinx our chances of winning. Of course I had faith that our team wouldn't do horribly-especially with Liam-but we were still missing Jackson who had practically carried our team for a few seasons, according to my brother. And speaking of Isaac, he isn't here either which also isn't too great. And then I haven't seen Danny in ages so I have no clue if he's even playing tonight.

Mason and I sat in a comfortable silence as the crowd buzzed around us. But eventually Mason turned to look at me.

"So when did you plan on telling me."

I looked away from the field, where everybody seemed to be getting ready to start, so I could give him a confused and slightly worried look. "T-tell you?"

"Yeah, about you and Liam?" Mason said like it was supposed to be obvious.

I was more taken aback than anything else. "Me and Liam? There is no me and Liam."

Mason practically laughed at me as he rolled his dark brown eyes. "So you're telling me you totally not crushing on him?"

"I-what? I don't- I'm not, no I'm not." I stuttered out as I looked down to the field were Liam was currently putting on a helmet. I couldn't like him. I mean there was a lot to like about him but I just couldn't. I don't have crushes on guys. Well, I do, but not seriously; I'm too scared to let myself really fall for someone. It's just not possible for me to like Liam.

But deep down inside that was a total lie because Mason stirred something up inside of me. He stirred up the realization that I did indeed have feelings for Liam Dunbar.

I almost thought I was having an anxiety attack when my feelings dawned on me. But how deep did these feelings for Scott's Beta go? I mean sure he had eyes that I could melt into and forever be content and yeah, he may be incredibly gentle and kind but did I like him? If I did then this can't possibly end well for anybody.

Fear veiled its harsh reality over me and I squeezed my eyes shut as all of the possible outcomes of me and Liam ran through my mind. None of them were good. After everyone who's already done so much to help me, it's never end well. There all dead, miserable, or fighting for their lives. I can't let Liam get hurt because of me.

My eyes followed Liam's silhouette as he set up on the field and the fact that I had some kind of feelings for him was blindingly obvious. How could I have not figured that out already? Maybe I still have time to keep myself from falling to hard though.

Then again, when I was with Liam everything felt right. I wasn't always terrified of the world around me and I somehow even felt slightly safe. I don't get to say that very often. Maybe it was too late and I was already falling for him.

No. No, I'm just over-thinking all of this. That's the only reasonable explanation, right?

Suddenly a dark-skinned girl with a thin face came over to Mason and me. She was a freshman and even had a class or two with me. I think her name was something floral, like Rose or Violet.

"Hey, Mason, can I sit next to you?" Rose or Violet asked my friend. I sighed, relieved that she had saved me from drowning in my own thoughts.

Mason looked over to me to see if I was okay with it and I just nodded. He then looked back at the girl, "Yeah, that's fine with us."

The girl sat down on the other side of Mason just as the ref blew the whistle to signal the start of the game. I watched intently as the ball was quickly taken into the possession of a Devenford Prep player-who totally looked like he had a slight beard going for him. My concentration flitted from the player to green to Beacon Hills' number nine, Liam. These feeling I had for him definitely weren't upset about seeing him in a Lacrosse jersey. I quickly scolded myself for thinking that before I looked back to the player with the ball. In almost no time Devenford Prep was sending the ball sailing into the back of the net, scoring the first point of the night already.

Mason and I groaned as a whistle was blown to make the goal official. I slid out my phone as everything was once again set back up, this time Scott was taking the draw. I looked down at my phone to send Lydia a text to ask where she and Malia were and by the time I looked back up, Brett had gotten the ball. I ran a hand through my hair as I watched Liam's rival soar down to the goal.

Then, I noticed Liam heading towards Brett in order to stop him. He didn't ever make it to his old teammate though as two opposing players slammed into Liam to stop him which resulted in Liam being thrown back. My hands flew up to cover my mouth as I watched Liam with wide eyes. I knew he was a werewolf and all but I still couldn't help but feel worried for him.

Just as Brett scored yet another goal for Devenford Prep, Liam stood up and whipped off his helmet. Soon his stick and gloves were also on the ground as he charged at the two players who had knocked him down. My breath caught as he did so but luckily he was intercepted by Stiles and Scott before he could do any harm.

As he was being held back by my two friends, Liam looked to the stands. Even though there were people surrounding me I knew I was the one Liam was looking at.

"Anchor," I whispered under my breath, knowing that he'd be able to hear me. All the thoughts about me liking him went out the window. All I could think about right then was helping Liam.

I watched as Liam closed his eyes and took a deep breathe. Then his eyes opened back up as he looked at me once again. I smiled at him softly once I saw he was much calmer and he nodded in response. Scott and Stiles released Liam and let him gear back up so the game could continue on. But I still had time to see Scott look nervously over in the direction of Garrett. Did he think Garrett was going to try something right now?

Teams once again set back up as everyone got into their assigned positions, this time with Stiles taking the draw. I found myself chewing on my nail as I watched my pale friend go for it and somehow managing to actually get it before the much larger player he was going up against. Pride sang through me as Stiles passed the ball off to Kira who took off down the field. She weaved in between the defenders with grace and soon she was scoring the first goal of the night for Beacon Hills. Sadly, coach had wanted her to pass the ball instead of shoot which got her taken off the field.

The game went on while Kira was stuck on the bench. No more shots were scored but the tension in the air was almost as thick -and dramatic-as the fog gathering on the field.

The ball soon found its way to the grass and Liam, Brett, and Garrett went after it. All of them collided violently-more so Liam and Brett then Garrett-which resulted on them tumbling to the ground. The referee's blew there whistles to pause the game as Liam and Brett both rolled around in pain. I quickly shot up in my seat so I could get a good look at Liam to see if he was really injured. Fear consumed me as I realized that if Garrett had a blade in his stick, like Scott and Stiles suspected, then he could've easily just gotten Liam.

Without hesitation I jumped down to the bleachers to get to the sidelines were Kira also was.

"Did Garrett do anything?" I questioned her in a low voice.

"I have no idea."

Liam got up which hopefully meant that he was okay. Brett on the other hand was still on the ground moaning in agony. The amount of pain he seemed to be in was so great that I actually started to feel bad for him.

All of the commotion went on for a while so Scott, Stiles, and Liam took this as a chance to come over to Kira and me.

"I talked to coach, I'm out for the rest of the game," Liam told me with a look of disappointment evident on his face.

"Are you okay though?" I asked in concern.

Despite the fact that he wasn't able o play lacrosse, Liam nodded and gave me the smallest of smiles, "Thank you for helping me."

"That was all you, Liam. I just reminded you to find an anchor," I said gently as I returned his smile.

"Yeah, I found one," Liam assured me.

"What are we going to do?" Kira asked Scott which caused Liam to look over at them.

The true alpha shook his head before admitting, "I don't know. Something's still not right, we're missing something."

Suddenly my phone began to buzz and I pulled it out of my pocket to see a response from Lydia. Without hesitation I opened it up only to see a text with news I had been doubting I'd here today.
